Subject: BS: Thread Ignored, I must be a loser!
From: GUEST,Nick
Date: 03 Nov 02 - 01:17 PM

I posted a thread that garnered no responses! Wow it must have been a horrible question, or just so poorly worded that it drove people away!
I guess it puts to rest the notion that people here will respond to anything.

I wont bore you again with the subject, as it proved so boring the first time!

Now I don't really invest that much personal stock in a post but I think it is a first. And I will remain brave, I'm not a total loser (Sniff, Sniff) Being ignored is not a true reflection of my worth as a person! ( Is it?)

Has it ever happened to you, if so what was the subject?

So I guess I am just complimenting the good taste and great discretion of Mucatters.

Nick

Don't despair, many of my most exciting threads over the past 6 years, ones that I thought were going to rule the world, died with zero response. I cried the first few times, spoke to my teddy bear (who agreed with me) went to the bridge and looked over, and then thought -- catspaw always gets a response, but am I willing to stoop down into the disgusting gutter in which he swirls? No, I said, never, I resist such, I am above that!! I will not sully my inquiries about folk music's influence on Karlheinz Stockhausen with insinuating references to the enormous breasts of his mistress, Katya. And I walked away from that bridge. Do thou likewise.

yours, Peter T.

Was it the teaming up for Christmas songs one? Alice has responded, if so. If there are other hot topics going on, sometimes things do slip down, but there are many folks who look for those and try to bring them back up. We just might be a little slow about it, at times.

Or, maybe you are just being a whiney, titty-baby, as Aine says?!**BG**

Right...

I have started several threads that would have died without a single response, but I usually remedied that by posting to them again MYSELF! Eventually one or two other people usually will then post also. Once they have their ego is involved and they are hooked.

If you include the word "Shatner" in the title of any thread it is guaranteed to go to at least 5 posts, so consider that in future, GUEST.

Or you could include "Punch the Horse" in the title. This would lead to a clamour of UK East-coast types all trying to make themselves heard against a fiercely proud regional background-hiss of white noise. In fact, putting a "9" in the title is a recognised short cut that will arouse 20 or so to the point that they will post broadly the same message about 3 times each. Wa Hey!!! 60 messages guaranteed!

Well, I posted a thread once that attracted no postings(as far as I remember), but that caused me great delight as it was a response to a challege to produce a thread title so boring that nobody read it. I believe it was called "Polka Festival in Belgium". Should be in the archives, I'll go and look it up. Be funny if I find it had 100 replies later on.

Well I started a number of threads on well known (to me) early recording musicians that attracted virtually no response.

There are very few people here who give a rat's ass whether:

Riley Puckett used a flat pick or not (he didn't)

Paul Mason Howard played a zither or Dolceola (the latter)

Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang were great together (they were)

Joe Venuti was a blues fiddler (he was...just a VERY good one)

So here's what ya do Nick.

Use a funny, misleading header, full of bad jokes. That's my stock in trade around here.....But ya have to make the THREAD worthwhile!

Hmmmmmm. "Polka Festival in Belgium" eh Greg? I think you nailed it with that one.

Cheers

Rick

I've checked and my memory was a slightly faulty. It was actuallly called "Polka concert in Belgium" which is probably worked better than "festival", which would have implied you could at least have danced or played tunes with people. But it did in fact get two postings. One didnt count as it was Litttle Hawk and I had alerted him to the success (or lack of it). But there was one genuine visitor(who made his excuses and left) on the second day.

The thread in question would have gotten many more reponses and most of them very quickly had you titled it:

Whistling on My Yule Log
Big Boobs and Christmas Carols
N.I. Armalites and Christmas Carols

...or something along those lines. I would however like to point out that quality is most times better than quantity and Alice came along with some good ideas.

Nick, I can't comment, really, without knowing your thread title and topic. There are many threads I don't even open because the title doesn't intrigue me or sound like something that 'needs' my input. And there are some where I open the thread and feel I have nothing to add.

But, yes, I do think I've started threads that nobody posted to. (I have no way of knowing whether people read them or not, if they were not requesting information.) A few other times I had to refresh a thread once or twice before anyone posted to it. Please don't feel alone or take it personally.

Not only are you a loser, you are a loser at being a loser, because I can top you. A thread drifted into a discussion of movies, so I started the thread Mostest Movies, and it got no responses even though there was already an active discussion going which suited it.

And, everytime I've tried to register as a member, it doesn't take, but blocks me from registering again because I'm already registered as a member. Or maybe I'm a registered non-member. But it's all right, even ideal--I wouldn't join anything that would have me as a member anyway.

And I thought it would be funny if nobody replied after curmudgeon's post.

I think I've killed threads. I don't know if one actually kills them or they just die a natural death and the last poster is just late or prolonging the inevitable.

Fred, there's a "Fred Miller" already registered. If it's you and you can't remember your password to reset your cookie (see Quick Links above) you can post in the Help Forum and Joe Offer or Pene Azul will get you sorted.

I don't post here very often but I go here a couple of times a day and read interesting threads. I always feel sorry for those who have posted and not got any response. Yes, I really hate to see "1" under messages in the list of threads! I wish I could write something but it's not very often I can answer. This may seem a bit strange but I think it has to do with the fact that I was mobbed when I was young and feel very sorry for others who seem to be "outsiders"! These are my own very personal feelings and I'm not saying that those who don't get answers are outsiders, I just thought I should tell you about my feelings… As it may be a bit odd it may amuse someone! ;-)

I used to post here frequently, but I got tired of being snubbed, too. I still linger a lot, because I truly enjoy reading what the regulars have to say. They just don't seem to be too interested in my posts, no matter what the thread subject is. Still, I think this is a great forum, and I hope Max keeps it going.

I'm always curious when someone says they've been snubbed or ignored when they've posted, but doesn't say WHAT the posts were. The implication is always that it was their 'guest' status or 'newcomer' situation that was responsible for the lack of response.

I've watched dozens (if not hundreds) of new posters come into Mudcat...go through the mandatory 'newbie' period, and then become part of the 'core' group. Some of the more outgoing folks STARTED their relationship with the Cat by saying "Hi, I'm HERE", and received nice welcomes.

On the other hand (and I really CAN'T remember the details) there was a person a year or so ago, whose intial five or six posts were just filled with 'attitude', and who later complained about a restrictive 'inner circle' keeping her on the 'outside'. That was just plain silly, and certainly showed that the person knew nuthin' about getting along in 'groups'....but needless to say, 'Mudcat' (which is very similar to a 3d group of folks) got blamed.

Nah, t'ain't hard to be accepted around here...if you want to.

Cheers

Rick

happens to me rather regularly. What's an even bigger pisser is when someone starts a thread that is for all practical purposes, identical to one you started just days before (and got no responses)...

...and the new thread gets 100 posts in the first day.

It's all an evil plot.

kidding aside, it's usually what catspaw said -- it's all about thread title. You can count on longer threads if you are one of the regulars here -- you'll get responses from online "friends" -- but the quality of the resonses won't necessarily be all that satisfying.

...boy that came out wrong!

I just meant by "satisfying" that you can have long threads that are just folks shooting the bull -- it's fun maybe, but if information is what you seek, some very short threads are often just as useful.

Much better said than I did John....exactly what I meant!

As John recalls, he and I had some conversation on this same subject when he first came here. Many of us valued John's posts because it was easy to see he was quite knowledgeable, but we had inadvertently failed to respond. Sometimes just a note of agreement can make someone feel much more at home. A member once asked me why I even bothered to post when all I said was "So and So made a great post." It's not to be cliqueish or anything, simply to let someone know that we read what they wrote.

I used to post a lot more to instrument threads than I do now, but to be truthful, I've probably said what I have to say on this guitar or that capo about 4 or 5 times already, but I have made an effort to read and comment on the ideas of others who haven't been around here so long. Really, you just kinda' run out of things to say....and some folks are intimidated by sending them back to older threads.

Some subjects are simply very narrow and there are few people with much knowledge on the subject. On those threads a refresh from someone can help to keep it alive for awhile until perhaps the right person shows up. Don't be put off if I (and a few others) refresh the thread with a joke......just ignore it and go on, being happy your thread was noticed and hope someone else sees it.

I think that it can actually be informative to say "So and so made a great post" when the question is for opinions rather than simple information.

Scenario one: someone asks, Are Elixir strings any good? Mudcatter X says "Yes, because...", Mudcatter Y says "No, because...", and the thread ends there.

Scenario two: the thread continues, one person says "I agree with Mudcatter X" and thirty people say "I agree with Mudcatter Y."

I would say that while the first scenario does provide the questioner with something to think about, the second scenario provides more information.

Jeri, I thought I was the one who had the unintended skill of killing threads! *G*

Rick, you're right that newcomers' posts aren't routinely ignored by virtue of that status. But we relative newcomers sometimes do have the experience of posting some silly little comment to a BS thread full of other silly little comments and being ignored --- kinda like joining a small group chatting at a cocktail party and having them talk among themselves and not acknowledge anything you say.
This is not really rudeness, though, I think. In a non-informational thread, posters often do address their remarks to specific other posters, and it's no surprise that there often arise sub-conversations among "Mudcat pals" within the general thread. This is when the thread is more like a chat room than an information sharing session.

Not getting a reply to your post may mean folks didn't find it interesting (or found it offensive), but it also may just mean they didn't feel they had anything important to say in reply--and that you haven't established a personal connection with them such that they feel like bantering with you--yet.

Ballpienhammer - The forum screen should refresh automatically if you post. It's only when you don't actually post anything that you neeed to hit the refresh button periodically. If that's not what's happening on your computer, sumfin's wrong widdit. Or do you have one of those internet TV things? If so, that's the problem and there ain't nothin' ya can do but live with it.

BPH, it depends on what browser you use and the settings. It's your browser that decides to go back to a cached page instead of looking to see if it's changed. I have MSIE and this is how I do it:

Tools/Internet Options - General tab
Under 'Temporary Internet Files' click the button for 'Settings'
Under 'Check for newer versions of stored pages' -
I have 'Automatically' marked, and it works fine.
Then click OK until all the boxes are closed.

There's a link to the Help Forum way up at the top. The folks who can help with technical stuff don't read every thread, but they DO check into the Help Forum often.

Threads that seem to get ignored more or less completely are likely to mean that the right people are not around at the right time and those that are are not able to answer a "more serious" or "more specific" question. This I think is common with all forums.

This thread is in a sense related to killing the thread which I thing I can now show - now paging is allowed (and I only point to page one - first 50 with my link, shouldn't be a problem under the new system).
