Subject: MUDCAT CD XI: HIIGH BRIGHT NOON!
From: Amos
Date: 04 Nov 02 - 12:39 AM

Hello, folkies near and far.

I am happy to announce that I have just finished the master CDs for the fifth and last Mudcat CD in the Mudcat Sampler CD Series.

The Masters -- an original set and a back up set - will be in the mail to Dick Greenhaus at CAMSCO Music by close of business tomorrow (PST) -- in separate packages.

MichaelR has been given the playlists and is scrambling to get the inserts and artwork all lined up pronto so that DIck will be able to ship for Xmas. It is very tight. We need every ounce of cooperation to make it happen.

The playlists will be published here in separate threads, one for each disk.

You must advise michaelr by PM if you have any preferences for how your name is listed, website or email or whatever, in the CD inserts. (Assuming you controbuted a song).

I am going back through to recover those comments you sent me and forwardthem on to him about preferences for listings.

If you would like to offer lyrics, liner note comments or nostalgia or background history about your tracks, you can do so in the thread for the correct CD. The playlist will be at the top of each thread, so just add a post for each song.

I will be catching up all the housekeeping over the rest of this week.

I believe that everyone who contributed has been represented in this CD series and I have gone over my collection records several times trying to make sure of this.

If you sent something in and were not included in any CD, it was by reason of error -- mine -- and not because you did not make a cut. I don't believe this happened to anyone but if it did, write me about it and I will see what can be done. But know that you wee not left out intentionally if so.

The final playlists had to be changed in a few cases because of copyrights on songs. Every song in the CD series has been checked for encumbrance and in several cases songwriters sought out and permission solicited and gotten. Most are singer-songwriter by Mudcatters.

Finally, there is no scheme or empirical standard used in the evolution of the playlists except my own juggling of many factors, including time, how different songs fit together, the recording quality of the original, and a number of other considerations which I melded together in sorting them.

Not all the tracks are professional quality recording. Some were done on kitchen tables with cassette recorders, some were done in professional studios. People have fretted with mer about whether their performance was good enough. I have tried to stress that the raw impact of the song and the singer -- not the polish -- has been the most important criteria for me. There are some tracks where the power of the song comes through more vividluy, in fact, for having been recorded in the field, with more life than it ever would have had in a pro shop. That's just the way it is. These are not "CDs-R-Us" recordings and you wouldn't want that kind for this purpose.

That said, I have tried as hard as I could to take the hisses and pops and field noises out of the tracks in order to bring out as well as I could the best of the song. I have not always succeeded, given the limitations of the time and technology and expertise I brought to bear, but I have done what I could and if it is not satisfactory I am wholly responsible.

Please see the individual threads for the playlists for the Orchid, Rose, Strawberry, Violet and Plum Disks.

There is no ordinality to the disks, which is why they were named that way. (But just as a comment I hope you pay close attenton to the beginnings of Orchid and the endings of Violet.)

Guess that's all. Sorry for such a long post! Can you tell I am stoked?

Regards,

A

And a SPECIAL thanks to that Dynamo of the West, Ms Sorcha, who did an amazing lot of work checking out rights and origins of the songs people sent in, to make sure we were all safe and legal-like. Did it fast and did it well, too. She's a pure-dee heroine.!!

(I offered her full time employment keeping me out of trouble but -- well she started asking about pay, but I think the high risk mighta made her nervous!! :>))

Love,

Thanks, Sooz!

The distribution will be through Dick Greenhaus' CAMSCO Music.

He is making ready to go into production as soon as he receives the master disks from me (shipping today) and the masters for the inserts from MichaelR who has generously volunteered to coordinate that side of the job.

There is a whole lot of beautiful, beautiful music on these disks, covering centuries and continents. Ya gotta hear 'em!!!

Start saving them dollahs!! It's a Christmas opportunity! (And, I believe, a historic first!)

Please do add any comments and lyrics to your songs to the appropriate threads as soon as the confusion wears off, ok?

There are people who will want to buy these CDs who are not habitues of our gentle domain here, and I'd like to make a PDF file or something that they could get for the fuller commentary.

Thanks!

I put this in the Plum link too, but I wanted to make sure Amos got the message: Nice Work! The hardest working and most underpaid producer and engineer this side of the Mississippi. If Amos needs a job, I'm hiring....

Amos told his 'Catters,
Man ain't nothing but a man,
And 'fore I'll let that mudcat cd beat me down
I'll die with these recordings in my hand,
Die with these recordings in my hand.

I don't know how the "Related Threads" thing at the top works, but it's causing a bit of grief at home here because there isn't a link to the Strawberry CD thread but there is to all (?) the others.

Can this be rectified, please?

Anahata, I have PMd Joe Offer, who personally handcrafts the crosslinks at the top, to add one to Strawberry. In the meantime you can just click here to get to it. How's that?

Lyrics and liner notes go in the respective Disk threads.

Any issues or project discussion can go here.

The disks are in the hands of the Mighty Gawd USPS! Pray he flies true this week! They'll be with Dick by Friday, Monday the latest.
I sent them in five separate packets, so if they lose one the complete set will still arrive.

I realize looking at the history of the threads up above that this project was conceived way back in 98-99. It was resurrected in March of this year. Eight months, nine months with the followup work. A familiar number!

As usual in my business the original baselined schedule was exceeded significantly. But we're under budget! Good thing, 'cuz there ain't none! Software engineers are always over-optimistic about work and resources. THey seriously believe that 2.4 women could produce a baby in 3.75 months! :>)

You who are celebrated and offered renown
For your voices and music throughout Mudcat Town
Pray save future readers from tears and Hystirics
By entering liner notes, credits and lyrics!!

These songs will be precious, and honored and lauded!
Your music and craft will be widely applauded
But think of the listeners, lost and afloat
Without any lyrics or credits or notes!

Oh stir yourself, Artist! Thy muses implore
This heartfelt request do not deign to ignore!
But add -- oh please add! (though I've already said it)
Your lyrics, and comments, and any due credit!

Love,

A

FOr those who wonder about the ability to acquire the Mudcat Sampler CD Series for yourselves:

The disks are en route to CAMSCO Music.

MichaelR is organizing the copy for the inserts.

When the inserts and master disks hook up at CAMSCO, Dick Greenhaus will roll into production.

He is doing this on a non-profit, cost-only footing, because he is Da Man!

He and Max, I presume, will establish a price point and as soon as we hear that he can process orders and ship the floodgates will open. We will pound gongs and beat the bowdhrans and break champagne glasses in the fireplace. And drum up orders!

Feel free to pester CAMSCO with incessant inquiries, if you wish. It's probably add time, though! :>)

I have suggested to Bill Sables to hook up to organize a distribution line for UK Catters similar to the Tshirt arrangement he had.

Everyone's doing their part, which is the most amazing thing about this wide-flung cooperative venture!

I've heard from Max, and he sounds excited about the Mudcat CDs and can't wait to see what we got. The disks should be with CAMSCO tomorrow, I hope. Dick Greenhaus has been named as Da Man for setting the price points. I'll talk to him about it soon.

This has been a remarkable project because it has been entirely voluntary, and has sprung up from the grass-roots of the Mudcat, and self-organized into something that works. Michaelr is wrestling with the inserts, several people have stepped forward to address the UK distribution issue, others have chimed in to offer help from every side.

It reflects, to me, on the remarkable nature of this community, and by extension, on the strange chemistry of time, song, and personality that seems to manifest itself in the hearts of those who Sing the Old Music. They are indeed a breed apart.

Thank you all very very very much! For helping, for encouraging, of course -- but most of all, for singing on!! That's the real gold, the real karma, and the biggest value in the world, a safeguard in mad times and a promise of better ones ahead for every generation who hears it and understands. Sing on, never stop singing on.

Good stuff, Greg! :>)

Folks the wheels are turning. We are clearing up the minor administriva that any large task like this brings with it. Michael is doing Augean labor in getting the art work and play lists all lined up using Homeless' artwork, and Dick Greenhaus has proved his celestial mettle by doing an ace job as copy editor on the play lists.

So real soon now, I expect, we'll be hearing the CDs are ready for delivery. At that time, let us flood CAMSCO with orders. Save them nickels and dimes, kids!! Swamp the place with orders!

There are several reasons for this. The biggest one is to make this the must successful fundraiser the 'Cat has ever had. Another is to ensure we can maintain the standard of service we get from this remarkable forum and ensure its future. A third is to actually immerse opurselves for a few bright hours in each others' music, which is a transcendental kick in itself!

So stand by, the starter's gun will be raised momentarily!!

Let's overwhelm CAMSCO!! Yaayyyyyyy!! **bg**

Folks, it's only a couple of days now (barring unforeseen disasters) until we achieve harmonic convergence of the thousands of disparate elements that make up the Mudcat CD series.

Imagine a giant vacuum cleaner pointing into the sky and sucking up bits of music around the globe, picking up words and colors along the way, funneling them into the direction of Connecticut, swirling like a funnel cloud reducing to a single point -- Dick Greenhaus's place!

This will occur when Dick receives my artwork files for the CD inserts AND the blank CDs which I will hand-screenprint, forward to him, and then he will finalize the whole ball of wax.

This has been a very exciting project to watch unfold, and to be involved in. Thanks to all the volunteers who have helped and are going to help unto completion. And thanks to all the contributors for providing the myriad bits of information needed for the inserts.

And just wait `til you read Amos's liner notes. The man is eloquent!
"Adamant celebration", indeed!

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for the kind words, Michael. Kevin, I leave it to Max' capable hands to use the plan that appears to have worked -- the amazing thing was how the self-organizing flow of help just came together!    A humming ball of transplanetary energy!! Like, wow!! Ya dig?

OK guys -- we will shortly hear the sound of the starter gun, the roar of orders, the flood of CDs flying in hordes to all the starry points of the Mudcat world, the multiple thwipp-thwipp-thwipp as the CD series land in stockings and under trees all over Mudcattalot!

If you don't have your nickels and dimes saved up for these CDs, go call your favorite uncle and beg, hold up your children's college fund, sell that RV, but not the Gibson!! And stand by to order!!

There will be no peace around here until y'all got your music!!   **BG**

BTW, I'd like to suggest that once everything is complete, we cull the lyrics and track info from the individual CD threads, and put them in a permathread so people looking for info don't have to wade through all the chatter.

What say, Joe?

Cheers,
Michael

Has the cost for the set been decided yet? And ordering arrangements despatch and delivery dates and all that kind of thing. Christmas approaches. (Likely enough all that is in another thread somewhere - but there's a lot of them up thar at the top of this one.)

Bill Sables is managing UK distribution!! Hooray for him, too!!

Dick Greenhaus will be setting the price point shortly -- at no profit for his considerable effort. So three cheers to him for the big soul he is!

Subject: GREETINGS FROM CYRIL TAWNEY
From: Amos
Date: 14 Nov 02 - 04:19 PM

Richard (radriano) wrote Cyril Tawney, as did Morticia, for permission to use two of his songs in the Mudcat CD: Gray Funnel Line and Sally Free and Easy, respectively.

Cyril granted both permissions. He must be getting used to it -- in responding to Radriano's request he wrote:

Dear Richard

The Mudcat Cafe recording of "GREY FUNNEL LINE" is OK by me, with the proviso that the notes credit the song to me, via Gwyneth Music, as usual.

Very best wishes to you and the Mudcats,

CYRIL TAWNEY

So there ya go, all Catters!A touch of fame.

Dick says he's got a service for high-speed production that does everything from stuffing jewel cases and printing the disks to overwrapping (that impenetrable plastic sheet on the outside). We are really coooking now!! And he likes the sound!!

Hi Y'all--
It would be VERY helpful if I could get some idea of how many Mudcatters (and others) will be ordering these CDs. Obviously, per-CD production costs will drop drastically as run size goes up, but I don't want to over-order and fill my already-crowded house up with unsold shiny coasters.

I'f you're planning on being a purchaser, could you let me know this, and give me some idea of whether you want one CD, a set of five or summat in between. Tentatively, sibgle CDs will sell for $15; An entire set will be $60

Thanx!

These are CD-Rs. If you're worried about sound quality, there's no difference between glass-mastered "pressed" CDs and CD-Rs. If you're worried about longevity, these come with a lifetime warranty. If the disk fails, mail it to CAMSCO and we'll replace it free.

Seriously, most CD-Rs will fail within 5 years, many a lot sooner.

It's only fair to make potential purchasers aware of this fact.

You're looking at a big bill by making that promise, Dick

I reckon we're coming in to the last Mudcat CD thread!.

I believe your negativity is unwarranted and petty, Guest. I haven't seen you contributing anything to this project -- I know you didn't send in any music, and I am willing to bet you haven't been helping Dick. You certainly didn't volunteer to front the cost of glass-mastering these CDs, did you?   If all you have to volunteer is your civic halitosis, whyncha buzz off, huh?

clearly, it's better to press CDs than to burn 'em. Trouble is, it makes no economic sense to press 1000 copies of something that'll sell 100.

I have CD-ROMS that are over 5 years old that work fine. It's possible that, if I had left them out in the sun wiothout a protective envelope or jewel case, they'd have failed. Oddly enough, I don't do that.
