Following are the liner notes for "The Grey Funnel Line" - in 2000 I put together a collection of concert performances by my former band "Out of the Rain" and released a cd entitled "With The Friends I Love Best". Band members are Richard Adrianowicz (vocals, guitar, tinwhistle), Suzanne Friend (vocals, tinwhistle, bodhran), Marla Fibish (vocals, mandolin, mandola, guitar), Cait Reed (fiddle, harmony vocals), and, on some cuts, former band member Jack Gilder (concertina, flute, tinwhistle, harmony vocals).

Suzanne Friend leads this a cappella version of The Grey Funnel Line, the last song Cyril Tawney wrote before leaving the Royal Navy in 1959. You can feel that suspended feeling of waves and the rocking of the sea in the melody. 'The Grey Funnel Line' is the sailor's nickname for the Royal Navy. The song is about a sailor leaving home and his loved one. He's fed up with the Senior Service and he'd rather be outside, but he has to go away yet again. Cyril got the idea for the chorus from a shanty with the refrain rock and roll me over for one more day. A short negro lament called Dink's Song, which Cyril found in a book of American folk songs collected by the Lomaxes, provided some of the inspiration for verse two. 'The likes of me' in the second verse refers to a young man who had discovered too late that he had other gifts that were of little use in Her Majesty's fleet. A 'walkashore' (verse six) refers to a method of passing from ship to shore and back again without the need of a boat, even though the ship isn't alongside. It's usually a series of pontoons, and it's generally only used if the ship in question is at a fairly permanent berth. The only walkashore Cyril remembers using was from the submarine depot ship 'Forth' in Malta. Cyril Tawney joined the Royal Navy as a 16 year-old and served in a variety of craft, but mainly submarines. His role as a folk-singer evolved out of his activities as a scriptwriter and performer in Naval entertainments. He came to the attention of the BBC in 1957 and soon had his own fully networked television program. It was around this time that he decided to buy himself out of the Service and become a full-time singer. Apart from his own compositions, Cyril has specialized for the most part in English folk song, mainly South-Western and Maritime, and he played an important part in establishing the Folk revival in Devon and Cornwall.

Well, Rainbow is a sort of lullaby for the Peace and Love Generation. It came to me nearly complete in a dream, and I woke up at 4 AM to scribble the jist of it in the dark.

(Inspired by a gathering I was to attend this past summer in Nazareth, PA, to visit the Martin Guitar factory and meet up with other Martin affectionados. At the last minute, my trip had to be cancelled for business reasons...so I wrote the tune to console myself.)

Laddie Lie Near Me.
I first heard this traditional song at a Folkworks weekend in Darlington,UK, in 2001. Our tutor, Alyth McCormack, taught it to us. The words I sang are:
Lang hae we parted (perted) been, laddie ma dearie,
Noo we are met again, laddie lie near me.

All that I hae endured, laddie ma dearie,

Since then, I've found more versions and some fascinating information on Mudcat. When I sing it now I use 'Lang hast thou lane alane' for the second line of the chorus.

   My best friend, Don Austin, was on his way back to Ireland for an extended return visit in April of 1990. He been to Kerry the autumn before and returned with a photo album of his trip. He out the photos on the right side of the open page and a map of Ireland on the left side with star to correspond wher the photos had been taken. He also smuggled an aftershave bottle of Poteen and a lump of sod for a fellow band member in his suit case.

He called to say he had gotten Bronchitis and had to postpone his trip. His third bout with Bronchitis since summer. I was working in his home town and planned to stopped by to visit him on my way home. I knew he was sick and probably wasn't up to a visit so I went home instead. Some time in that afternoon or nightime he died of heart failure. I have wondered since if I'd have stopped by things would have turned out better.

Lots of people find this song corny or too much in the "parlor song" idiom for their liking. For me it communicates a deep sense of loss and regret, and conjures up clear visual images. I don't know how I learned it, which adds a bit of mystery.

Thank you, Amos! You know, I was rethinking my "liner notes." I have read that Herbert Hughes set Yeats' words to music. However, that doesn't mean he set them to music of his own composition; he may have just used a trad. tune. Variants of the tune for "Down by the Salley Gardens" certainly can be found; I think of Cahill McConnell's version of "Todd's Sweet Rural Shade," for example. If anyone knows more about the tune, please pipe up and we can change the attribution if need be. Thanks.

St. Somebody's Song

This song's inspiration is a tv show that was cancelled long ago. A priest gave a prayer, and we the prayer moved Keith and i quite a bit. But we didn't know who the saint was that the prayer was named after ( or said, I don't know, not being Catholic). Anyway, we played around with the words and came up with this song. I will post the lyrics as soon as possible.
