Subject: New session - W Bromwich
From: Trevor
Date: 04 Nov 02 - 12:20 PM

Somebody has passed me some info about a session being held at The Wheatsheaf, High Street, Carters Green, West Bromwich, on Wednesday 6th November.

It seems that 'Moonstone' (accordion, fiddle & guitar) wuill be performing and that singers and players are welcome.

It's a one-off at the moment but the landlord would like it to become a regular thing.

(The address given to me is as above - I thought Carters Green was Halesowen but the number is 0121 553 4221 if you want to check it out)

Off my patch - I did 10 years living in WB and worked there 13.

About time we had some culture in West Brom

You don't count Frank Skinner then, Mr Red?

Frank Skinner is an Oldbury man. Three miles makes a lot of difference in the West Mids, or more properly - Staffordshire and Worcestershire.

I'm a Walsall man, Oakley, so niceties of that kind tend to go over my head. West Brom used to have nice buses with vevet seats, remember? Oldbury is one of those places we hear about, but don't take seriously. Like Frank Skinner, I suppose.

West Brom buses....mmm. The livery was very much like Birmingham Corporation, except the blue was much lighter. I think there may have been a phase when the blue was dropped in favour of all-cream, but I ain't sure. What colour were Walsall buses? Why does purple ring a bell with me? I was always told - and read somewhere that Barclays Bank in High Street, was the first ever branch of a bank. And the bloke with the long hair from Time Team, went to Oldbury Grammar.

... electric blue!!

WB buses were a sort of violet and cream, and looked a lot better than they sound! Brummagem buses were navy and cream; Wolverhampton were green and sort of canary. And Midland Red were...?

Sorry, what was the question again?

The Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus company's livery was from memory, Red. They always had only the word "Midland" on the side. I think from memeory, that Coventry Corporation's buses were maroon.

10 miles from here is the national trolleybus museum at Sandtoft. I went once, but got too aroused and had to be escorted, drooling and with pupils like pinpricks, from the premises.

Walsall buses had a bit of yellow in the stripes and they had trolley buses - probably the last of their kind in the UK and only only scrapped them because they couldn't get the spares. They tried to resurrect them between Doncaster and the racecourse. I was in charge of the technical side of trolley buses in Wellington NZ.
Now Wolverhampton buses were green and cream.
They had trolley buses too, I used to do the Fighting Cocks to Bilston and Bilston to Darlo run on trolley buses from school.

The trolleys stopped when they built the M6, which cut off Walsall from Wolverhampton: "they" didn't like the idea of 500-volt cables dangling over their nice motorway. And you've prompted me to submit this offering for bus-fanciers everywhere.

Steve

Mr Red, I can see a possible reason why Walsall Trolleybuses failed to succeed in the Doncaster - Racecourse service. I guess its a question of geography. Nice song, Steve. Hull buses are maroon and typical of the city's slightly cautious attitude to change, have been that way since AD43, when Hadrian successfully mounted a campaign to ignore the place.

I'm originally a Wednesbury boy (So Fuck Off Jeremy Clarkson!)but have been living in Stafford since 1974. I played The Wheatsheaf with Gerry Mahoney and his partner Jax several months ago. We had a great session and the landlord and the crowd, although unused to eclectic folk music, were absolutely bostin'.
Best of luck to getting a regular club off the ground.

Johnny N (WBA Fan)
