Welcome Libertarian.....but when you get here, PLEASE explain exactly what a 'Libertarian' is.

I'be been called a 'pinko', an anarchist and even once a "bloody Libertarian". Can one be a combination of all three?

Cheers

Rick

'barnacle - just 'cuz s/he can't spell "librarian" is no reason to make fun of (appropriate pronoun)

y'know - English would be a lot more convenient if we had a gender neutral pronoun...instead of male/female/NOTHING....

Welcome, Libertarian, to the Mudcat Cafe. What are your musical inclinations? Do you play an instrument? Sing? Tell us about yourself.
I have been an amateur folk singer for 40 years, and am still trying to achieve a creditable barre chord.

Welcome to the madhouse; don't let it get your dander up, and you'll have a fine time with this rollicking lot. We range from those who share your nominal philosophy to those who think Bill Clinton was much too liberal and GWB won fair and square, and all possible illusions in between!

Glad to have you!

Welcome Libertarian. If your name is truly representative of your politics, then the U.S. Mudcat member political affiliation currently stands at:

Democrat - A shitload
Republican - A lot-less-than-a-shitload
Greens - A handful
Libertarian - A smaller handful
Anarchists - Under provision of The Patriot Act, the exact number is to remain undisclosed due to pending FBI investigation

Ok, thank you all for the welcomeing, I really appreciate it. mrrzy and I had a wonderful time at the march, and I think we will be friends forever because of it. At least I hope so. Anyhow to find out what a libertarian is go to http://www.lp.org and you will learn that you have nothing to fear but everything to gain from us Libertarians. We only want you to be able to live your lives without interference from government or your fellow man unless of course you would welcome him/her!!!!!! I hope to meet the whole lot of you as time goes by, and I am hoping mrrzy and I can also spend a lot more time together discussing everything. Thanks again for the welcome mat, and maybe next time, roll out the red carpet!!!! LOL

(quote)
"Anyhow to find out what a libertarian is go to http://www.lp.org and you will learn that you have nothing to fear but everything to gain from us Libertarians. "

Well , speaking for myself , I know enough about the Libertarian
platform after over 10 years of hearing their symposiums and their Political candidates ( in particular their presidential candidate Brown ) to be more than a little put off by your using this forum for what is apparently a Jehovah's Witness-style of party promotion ( ie: here's some of our material so you can learn more about us ).
And before one is tempted to counter my promoting of C-Span as license to do the same for Libertarians or Greens or Scientologists or Paganists or what-have-you may I first mention that I promote C-Span expressly because it takes *no* side while consistantly providing uniterupted broadcast forums for *all* sides. Yet, in doing so I never presented ,let alone advocated anyone , go to it's website.

Bottomline: I don't give a damn about your prosletising the Libertarian-branded literature ,online or otherwise , but I *do*
appreciate what you *yourself* think without the benefit of someone else's pre-agendaed , pre-committee written propaganda. I believe many of the *free-thinkers* here would far more want your Libertarianism to speak through you in your own positions taken on any of the issues you are free to join in on.

So , speaking for myself , you'll get a lot more rspect for your opinion when you ex[ress it as your own *made-up mind* and not with your chosen party's label and literature at the ready.
Just some freindly advice , you would be giving *free-thought*
less of a bad name if you actually applied it. Trust that enough of us already know how to do politicalparty.org searches for ourselves.

On that note ,welcome....but you're now on secret probation ;-)

My only reason for even mentioning the LP is due to the fact I was asked earlier in the thread what a libertarian is, and the lp.org site is a concise way to show someone what a libertarian is, I firmly believe in self-government, as well as self responsibility, this is another reason I embrace Atheism, I don't have to blame or ask some mythological being for forgiveness, I firmly accept responsibility for my actions. I am glad however there is this outlet for those of us who have been left out of the main stream, and I really appreciate mrrzy introducing me. Thank you again mrrzy.

Ok mrrzy told me this is a music forum and informed me that you would like to know what kind of music I enjoy. The main type of music I listen to is rock, I don't care what kind of rock, I love most music that calls itself rock. Especially metal, oldies, classic, the music rock-rap, in other words anything that is head-banging music. I've been listening to rock all my life, and I guess I will listen to it for the rest of my life as I don't think my tastes will ever change. I also agree with Mary Garvey above in that I have the attitude of live and let live. I try not to pessimistic about anything, and I am hoping to leave this world in much better shape than I found it, unfortuantely the D's and R's are doing a much better job worsening the situation than the L's ever will. I for one would like to leave our children with no debt to pay off, not mortgage their future for a despotic government that claims to only want to help us and make things better the way they see it, when all they succeed in is taking away more of our liberties and freedoms. I firmly believe in the spirit this country was founded upon, and wisdom of our forefathers, not the wisdom of the current ilk in power because the current ilk in power only want to force us to live as they see fit and not let us live our lives as we see fit. Thank you again mrrzy for the introduction to this group, and I will try to only be a positive influence here.

A belated welcome to Libertarian from a Recovering Republican & now beDamned Dimmycrat. / Your political & musical preferences sound most interesting, L. Both are still rock & roll to us.

I think you'll find the preponderant politics around here are on your side "socially" --against government intrusion on personal private behavior, especially re morals, religion, drugs, etc. -- but watch out for the 2nd Amendment issues & health-related stuff like smoking; there, we're not so sure about this Individual Freedom business; a foolish consistency is the not the hobgoblin of OUR small minds, O no!

On foreign policy, we have plenty of Peaceniks, who should like Libertarian anti-interventionism (not to say Isolationism)(I TOLD you not to say "Isolationism"! :)

But on Economics: good luck selling pure unregulated Capitalism here, buddy. Laissez-les-faires temps roulez. :) On those issues, you're in a nest of Statists, kid. Prepare to do positive & friendly battle.

A Libertarian activist in my state gave me his wonderful self-satirical platform summary on a business card: "We demand the abolition of practically everything; we call for drastic reductions in everything else; and we refuse to pay for what's left over." You guys are good guys, sez I. Otherwordly, yes; but good. And I know of no other party in this country that is philosophically *consistent*.

Full disclosure: I work for the Enemy. Government. State level. Field of Elections Administration. But, you don't need to Privatize---or I should say, Divest---us. Our product is already sold to the highest bidder. / (btw you guys had candidates on our ballot in CT last Tuesday, and you did pretty well. Well y'know: considering. :) / Look forward to chatting with ya.

Well again thanks for the kind words, on the note of not discussing religion and politics, that is what got us in this mess in the first place, letting others discuss for us, so I no longer obey that rule. On the other note about libertarianism, I agree with the LP on almost everything, actually I am an Anarchist as well as an Atheist, so I just want government and religion to leave me alone, as I have read all about the founding of this wonderful country, and I refuse to let the Democrats, Republicans, or the religious people ruin this wonderful country. BTW I met mrrzy at the godless march on DC, and a wonderful time was had by all. I hope this straightens out a few things.

The answer to your question is "as far as I am concerned" there is no difference between a libertarian and a self-responsible anarchist. I think Anarchy is much preferrable to what we have today.
