I know we've sort of done ballet (and opera) but I've just seen an interesting article in the online Globe & Mail (Toronto) which some might find interesting. It starts: Imagine Stevie Wonder crooning "O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion," or Patti Austin belting out "But who may abide the day of His coming." Wonder and Austin are just two of the high-powered black artists who lent their considerable talents to a 1992 concept CD called Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration which has, in turn, inspired Patrick Parson to choreograph his new work Soulful Messiah, which debuts this week.

The full article is here at the Globe

(I'm always amazed when this new "Make a link" works ... or doesn't!)

So, has anyone heard the CD?

I sing in a fifty strong black male chorus (me being the only white man in the group)and we sing the Hallelujah Chorus following the arrangement from the Soul Messiah. Powerful stuff... complicated for our Chorus, which mostly does simpler, older black gospel, but very exciting when we get it.. And yes, I've heard the album... bought it when it came out. I didn't appreciate it as much at the time as I do now..

It'd be interesting to see how it's interpreted through dance, wouldn't it?

Pastor Donald Alford and the Progressive Radio Four sang "Hallelujah Chorus" on V.A., Gospel Christmas (with sound clip).
