Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Art Thieme Date: 07 Nov 02 - 09:00 PM John, I'm with ya. No amount of logic will change anything unless... It just aint worth fighting. This is what the powers-that-be want. I quit fighting it ---- and now I get the sleep I wasn't getting. As Leadbelly said, "Relax Your Mind" --- getting too bent out o' shape warps and turns us into Gargaoyles. One of those is plenty around here. All the best to you, Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Nov 02 - 09:46 PM Way back in 1997, in the early pioneering days of Mudcat when we used horse-drawn computers, we had a Mudcatter named Elsie (click here for her posts). If somebody posted something that didn't fit her definition of folk music, she jumped all over the person. She clobbered me for simply mentioning Cole Porter. Then Max developed a search utility and I did a search under her name. I found out she had never once posted any information about music herself, and I said so. Poor Elsie. She never posted anything again. BS is good. In moderation. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Bobert Date: 07 Nov 02 - 09:59 PM I was getting ready to complain about all these music threads clutterin' up the joint but I guess this wouldn't be a good time for that.... would it? Bobert p.s. And while we're on the subject, who ever is leaving those old guitar strings in the Catbox I'd appreciate it if you'd quit it. Last night I fumbled my way in there and one poked a big old hole in my paw when I was doing to cover up thing, thank you.... Geeze.... |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 08 Nov 02 - 08:53 AM Hi, John: This morning when I turned on Mudcat, I took a moment to check to see how we're doing on BS threads vs. music related threads. Out of first 15 threads, two were BS. You want there should only be one? Seems like there's still mostly music threads... even now when the elections are just over in the US, and folks want to talk about that. Mudcat feels suspiciously like real life. When I meet Catters in person and spend some time with them, we don't just talk about music. We enjoy each other as people, with all that goes with that. Admittedly, this is a music site, but it's musicians who come here, and they have lives and interests beyond music. At least, I sure hope so.. Someone commented that after the number of years that Mudcat has been on, it's understandable if there aren't as many lyric requests. Often new requests are referred back to existing threads. Maybe Mudchat will fill some of the desire just to talk about things other than music... as well as music. It's always great to catch you in the room... Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Bobert Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:14 AM Folk music, in it's nature, is music that comes from the joys and struggles of the common man. It isn't high brow in it's nature. It is driven by stories less of nobility and more of serfs. Alot of the BS threads are of those same struggles. One could think of the BS threads as inspirational fuel stops. Another aspect of folk music is sharing and Though it gets a tad heated occasionally, folks are morew than willing to share. I guess lastly, think of the forum as a menu in a resturant. If you don't like beets, don't order the danged things. Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: GUEST Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:26 AM I could understand the past arguments when it was difficult to do anything about it. Now it is easy for people to filter BS, I'm surprised this issue gets debated. If you don't like it and are a member, set the filter in membership. If you are a guest, just put BS: in the forum filter and click the little checkbox. Make the choice and either way, don't complain - the reasons for complaint have finally been eliminated. That said, like Murray, I do believe John's comments were made with tongue firmly in cheek. |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: GUEST,Fred Miller Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:27 AM I used to frequent a more music-centered site but got bored--except for the occassional query, I have as much music info as I have time to make use of, and yet there aren't many questions someone else couldn't answer better than I. But it is odd how folk music seems to have a particularly attractive culture--I like all kinds of music, but for b.s. and general culture, folk is the zone. |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Jeri Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:45 AM Well, Murray, you'd have to know this comes from John - "Mr. Punch-the-'9rse, Cara:-Between-the-Cushions, Hamsters-Can-Save-the-World" - in Hull! And we don't want to irritate the Hull crowd - there's about 50 of 'em here now! |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Celtic Soul Date: 08 Nov 02 - 12:49 PM The mistake being made here is in thinking that either side of the debate is "right". Those on the "This is a music forum" side of the debate are not right. Those on the "This is a forum for people who enjoy music" are not right. This place is what you make of it. Manage your *own* experience here by giving a miss to any thread you don't want to read. It really is that simple. Years of complaining from both camps have produced nothing more than increasingly more numerous threads on the subject. It certainly has not produced any change. So, my question is, "Why bother?" It's a heck of a lot easier to change ones perception and experience of a thing than it is to change the thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Amos Date: 22 Nov 02 - 09:43 PM Teaching John to spell, Wesley, is akin to teaching the proverbial pig to sing. It wastes your time, and annoys the pig. Let us desist from idle brainless chatter. Subject: RE: BS: There is to much BS From: Leadfingers Date: 22 Nov 02 - 10:37 PM I regularly attend a Folk Club Which has become a Folk and debating society.I find a strong similarity to Mudcat in this in that Folkies are NOT just interested in Folk Music ,but in a number of other issues, both frivolous and serious in context. While agreeing that this is primarily a Music Based Forum , to bar any non music based talk or discussion would be detrimental to the whole site. The more BS oriented threads also give the Mudcat wits an opportunity to display their odd or otherwise talents to the full.I personally have learnt quite a lot of probably totally useless facts from these threads, which some people apparently would like to ban totally. If you wish to Filter out the BS from your screen the facility is available to you.Otherwise do as I do (bearing in mind what a smart arse i am ) and dont bother to look at a thread that does not immediately grab your attention. If you look and are offended,C'est La guerre. If you look and are informed, great. I find that I look at around a third of the threads available, and ignore the ones I feel are of no interest to me,This is with out any of the Filters available to all members.Dont stop any of the BS threads, its an outlet for all sorts of repressed urges if nothing else |
