New Irish trad session.

The Anchor pub. Lewisham Road, corner of Lewisham Hill. About 2 mins walk from bus/train/DLR.

Thursday nights - kicking off 9-ish (give or take half an hour).

All standards of players welcome - there are no snobs here!

Good luck , nice to hear music in my birthplace is still about, will there be any singing or is it all eye-tiddel-ea -eye-tie sort of thing in D and G with an odd A chucked in for seasoning?

There was plenty of singing last week. As well as plenty of diddly. It's not snobbish, so if someone has something to offer which is of interest, then you can guarantee that it will get a listen.

Many years ago ESSEX GIRL was a barmaid at The Anchor. The last time that I looked in, there was no proper draught bitter - has that changed ? - I know that it's an Irish session, but I don't drink Guiness these days - and definitely not fizzy top pressure ale.

Am I right in thinking that this session is the one that used to be at Shillelagh's along the road towards Catford ?

Was there last week, I had a great time. I thought it was started, as an alternative venue for the Guildford Arms, Greenwich now that Derek and Mary had left! maybe i'm wrong. Anyway I don't think it is meant to be all diddly, it just needs a few more people along with a wider variety of material.
So if you live reasonably local, give it a try...... I can safely say that the Landlord is, very amenable. Afters all

I can safely say that The Anchor doesn't strike me as being one likely to find itself in CAMRA's next listing.

But the Guinness is very good.

The general theme for the evening is Irish traditional music, but the odd English, Scottish or American folk-song or tune (or any other song or tune for that matter) will likely be welcomed as long as it manages to move things along.

Chaucers practice is in Catford on Thursday so we could always defect from the Blyth and use the Anchor as an alternative watering hole. Does it matter if we don't turn up til after 10. Will they serve us????!!!!

Best to check that it's still running. I have a feeling that this session could outgrow the Anchor which is a tiny pub. (Although that would be a shame since it's virtually outside my front door ... he adds selfishly!)

I very much doubt if "The Anchor" has a PEL. Lewisham council doesn't seem to be quite so vigilant as neighboring Greenwich though, so you might be OK. At one time FOLKMOB used to have sessions there, and ESSEX GIRL remembers plenty of music there when she was behind the bar.

Im Glad you like it Aidan, I started this Thursday night when I heard that Shillelaghs (know I have spelt that wrong) the pub in Lewisham had changed hands, and that the new owners were taking over the Anchor, so I asked one of the partners if he would like some music in the pub and he was game.

We are all a very friendly lot there, defiantly no snobs, only people having a good time playing music and meeting and making good friend, it's always good to hear that a session is getting a good reputation of being friendly because there are some out there who aren't.

So bring all your friend along whether to play or just listen and any of you Mudcatters do drop in with instruments and voices alike.

And yes if you like late session, you will defiantly get them here, providing you can manage to get up for work Friday Mornings, I just think well it's only one more day to manage before the weekend!

Looking forward to another blast tonight. Bringing along my banjo cos it was hard to hear my mandolin above the other strings let alone Sean's bosca beag, but it's not my best instrument and I don't often play it in public. Still, worth a lash!

Music of any sort is good, well maybe not the head banging sort for me anyway, I don't think it will out grow the pub, it may be small but Shillelagh' (spelt it right this time) was even smaller, and that was well attended most of the time.

As for the late nights, maybe we should keep that bit under the hat, you never know who may be listening in!!

Yes, Linda and I looked in last Thursday, but it was so noisy (the customers, not the performers) that we went off elsewhere as singing would have been virtually impossible - even with my none too quiet voice. Linda was there some weeks ago and she said that it was much better with slots for bothe singers and musicians.

ITM stands for Irish Traditional Music. In the Lee/Lewisham/Catford area it is a basic assumption among many Irish Musicians that ANY session is automatically ITM and that anyone wishing to sing (heaven forbid) or play any other sort of music should go elsewhere - I usually do.

Ok woodsie and any other name you want to call yourself, don't start again!! It got you into trouble last time, and caused a lot of hard feelings among normally nice people, won't you ever learn my dear?

This is NOT an ITM (Irish Traditional Music) session it's an acoustic sing-around session, where ALL types of music and musicians are welcomed. Like all pubs it can be a bit noisy sometimes, but that normally settles once the playing/singing starts.

All who come will be very welcomed to join in, what ever your standard, and you will get a lot of encouragement from fellow musicians, should you need it.

We are a very friendly lot, so look forward to seeing any new faces on Thursdays around 8.30 /9pm at the Anchor in Lewisham

Hello to all the Anchor folk! I have had some nice times at the Anchor in recent weeks, been made welcome and in spite of variable noise from the regulars (didnt blame you for not stopping last week Dave, think it was Bank Holiday syndrome!!) always had a good time. The character of the session as I have percieved it is that its strenght is its variety, and its encouragement of players of all standards. Performers need to start somewhere and there is sympathetic support and accompaniment and that is what is needed to encourage players to practice and improve. Please support sessions and venues, dont knock them, even in jest. There are prescious few left.
