Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: breezy Date: 09 Nov 02 - 12:27 PM Good luck , nice to hear music in my birthplace is still about, will there be any singing or is it all eye-tiddel-ea -eye-tie sort of thing in D and G with an odd A chucked in for seasoning? Dont let the thread die so fast |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 11 Nov 02 - 07:35 AM There was plenty of singing last week. As well as plenty of diddly. It's not snobbish, so if someone has something to offer which is of interest, then you can guarantee that it will get a listen. Aidan |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Nov 02 - 08:22 AM Many years ago ESSEX GIRL was a barmaid at The Anchor. The last time that I looked in, there was no proper draught bitter - has that changed ? - I know that it's an Irish session, but I don't drink Guiness these days - and definitely not fizzy top pressure ale. Am I right in thinking that this session is the one that used to be at Shillelagh's along the road towards Catford ? |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Dipsodeb Date: 11 Nov 02 - 08:31 AM Was there last week, I had a great time. I thought it was started, as an alternative venue for the Guildford Arms, Greenwich now that Derek and Mary had left! maybe i'm wrong. Anyway I don't think it is meant to be all diddly, it just needs a few more people along with a wider variety of material. So if you live reasonably local, give it a try...... I can safely say that the Landlord is, very amenable. Afters all |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 11 Nov 02 - 11:57 AM Dave ... I can safely say that The Anchor doesn't strike me as being one likely to find itself in CAMRA's next listing. But the Guinness is very good. The general theme for the evening is Irish traditional music, but the odd English, Scottish or American folk-song or tune (or any other song or tune for that matter) will likely be welcomed as long as it manages to move things along. Slán go fóill. Keep 'er lit and pointin' skywards! Aidan |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Nov 02 - 06:02 PM Damn... why are these things always on Tuesdays or Thursdays.... I can't get to anything because Manitas is out those nights doing folky things. LTS |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Sarah the flute Date: 12 Nov 02 - 03:44 AM Chaucers practice is in Catford on Thursday so we could always defect from the Blyth and use the Anchor as an alternative watering hole. Does it matter if we don't turn up til after 10. Will they serve us????!!!! Sarah |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 12 Nov 02 - 04:01 AM I don't know how far and wide the guv'nor'd want this broadcast, but it was WELL after closing time last week when we put away our instruments ... Aidan |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: mooman Date: 12 Nov 02 - 04:04 AM Will try and call in next time I'm across in London. Thanks for the information. moo |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 13 Nov 02 - 03:46 AM moo ... Best to check that it's still running. I have a feeling that this session could outgrow the Anchor which is a tiny pub. (Although that would be a shame since it's virtually outside my front door ... he adds selfishly!) |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Nov 02 - 05:56 AM I very much doubt if "The Anchor" has a PEL. Lewisham council doesn't seem to be quite so vigilant as neighboring Greenwich though, so you might be OK. At one time FOLKMOB used to have sessions there, and ESSEX GIRL remembers plenty of music there when she was behind the bar. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 13 Nov 02 - 08:50 AM Well, given his apparent ambivalence about licensing laws, I doubt if the guvnor's fillin' his britches at the prospect of committing the felony of breaching one of Merrie England's more laughable/lamentable pieces of idiotic legislation. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: rock chick Date: 14 Nov 02 - 08:46 AM Im Glad you like it Aidan, I started this Thursday night when I heard that Shillelaghs (know I have spelt that wrong) the pub in Lewisham had changed hands, and that the new owners were taking over the Anchor, so I asked one of the partners if he would like some music in the pub and he was game. We are all a very friendly lot there, defiantly no snobs, only people having a good time playing music and meeting and making good friend, it's always good to hear that a session is getting a good reputation of being friendly because there are some out there who aren't. So bring all your friend along whether to play or just listen and any of you Mudcatters do drop in with instruments and voices alike. And yes if you like late session, you will defiantly get them here, providing you can manage to get up for work Friday Mornings, I just think well it's only one more day to manage before the weekend! rc |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Peg Date: 14 Nov 02 - 08:52 AM maybe I will try to make it there when I come over in January...can someone PM me the directions? (which train etc.) thanks! peg |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 14 Nov 02 - 08:53 AM Looking forward to another blast tonight. Bringing along my banjo cos it was hard to hear my mandolin above the other strings let alone Sean's bosca beag, but it's not my best instrument and I don't often play it in public. Still, worth a lash! |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: rock chick Date: 14 Nov 02 - 08:58 AM The general theme for the evening is not Irish traditional music, it any sort of music people want to play, I agree with Dipsdeb it just needs a few more people along with a wider variety of material. Music of any sort is good, well maybe not the head banging sort for me anyway, I don't think it will out grow the pub, it may be small but Shillelagh' (spelt it right this time) was even smaller, and that was well attended most of the time. As for the late nights, maybe we should keep that bit under the hat, you never know who may be listening in!! rc |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: rock chick Date: 14 Nov 02 - 09:09 AM Peg where you coming from? rc |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: GUEST,derrymacash Date: 15 Nov 02 - 03:43 AM eyes propped open with matchsticks ... The holy grail is definitely a sesh which kicks off at about 8 and allows us poor buggers with work the next day to get a reasonable time in the oul scratcher! Still and all ... great crack altogether. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Sesssion SE London From: Sarah the flute Date: 15 Nov 02 - 03:50 AM Didn't make it last night but will try to get the gang over next week Sarah |

Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: Mugwump Date: 21 Apr 03 - 07:10 AM Is this session still going? |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: Dave Bryant Date: 22 Apr 03 - 04:48 AM Yes, Linda and I looked in last Thursday, but it was so noisy (the customers, not the performers) that we went off elsewhere as singing would have been virtually impossible - even with my none too quiet voice. Linda was there some weeks ago and she said that it was much better with slots for bothe singers and musicians. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: GUEST,folkman Date: 22 Apr 03 - 07:06 AM What I don't understand is why it is called ITM session - this session was started by my friend ROCKCHICK, as an acoustic SING-AROUND where ALL types of music would be welcomed. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: GUEST,his majesty Date: 22 Apr 03 - 09:15 AM What is ITM? in the mood? |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: Dave Bryant Date: 22 Apr 03 - 09:25 AM ITM stands for Irish Traditional Music. In the Lee/Lewisham/Catford area it is a basic assumption among many Irish Musicians that ANY session is automatically ITM and that anyone wishing to sing (heaven forbid) or play any other sort of music should go elsewhere - I usually do. |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: mexican Date: 22 Apr 03 - 02:18 PM I thought it stood for Infinitely tiresome meanderings |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: Mugwump Date: 22 Apr 03 - 03:21 PM When I went there earlier this year, it was a really great night - friendly people, nice bar staff & good music! |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: cockney Date: 22 Apr 03 - 07:35 PM Funny, cos when I went there, apart from this guy who played mandolin and banjo, who was superb! all that was there were a bunch of folky wannabees and an old geezer, croaking "I'm not good looking!" |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: GUEST,young geezer Date: 23 Apr 03 - 07:43 AM Do you mind! - That old geezer was my granpa! |
Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: rock chick Date: 23 Apr 03 - 05:30 PM Ok woodsie and any other name you want to call yourself, don't start again!! It got you into trouble last time, and caused a lot of hard feelings among normally nice people, won't you ever learn my dear? This is NOT an ITM (Irish Traditional Music) session it's an acoustic sing-around session, where ALL types of music and musicians are welcomed. Like all pubs it can be a bit noisy sometimes, but that normally settles once the playing/singing starts. All who come will be very welcomed to join in, what ever your standard, and you will get a lot of encouragement from fellow musicians, should you need it. We are a very friendly lot, so look forward to seeing any new faces on Thursdays around 8.30 /9pm at the Anchor in Lewisham rc |

Subject: RE: New ITM Session SE London From: Bassic Date: 23 Apr 03 - 09:39 PM Hello to all the Anchor folk! I have had some nice times at the Anchor in recent weeks, been made welcome and in spite of variable noise from the regulars (didnt blame you for not stopping last week Dave, think it was Bank Holiday syndrome!!) always had a good time. The character of the session as I have percieved it is that its strenght is its variety, and its encouragement of players of all standards. Performers need to start somewhere and there is sympathetic support and accompaniment and that is what is needed to encourage players to practice and improve. Please support sessions and venues, dont knock them, even in jest. There are prescious few left. Gordon |
