Subject: Is it an age thing?? From: Mr Furrow Date: 10 Nov 02 - 05:35 PM Hi We played a barndance for a local ramblers association last night and I reckon the average age was about sixty(ish) or more. We started with really gentle tempos but this lot were really flying by the end of the dances. They obviously weren't experienced dancers but they were up at at it ALL night. We rarely get this level of enthusiasm from our younger audiences. Age thing? Rambler thing? Any thoughts |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Willie-O Date: 10 Nov 02 - 05:44 PM Must be a Rambler thing. I had no idea that old AMC automobiles were popular in England. Is it some kind of cult? W-O |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Ebbie Date: 10 Nov 02 - 06:41 PM Mustbe a cult- I had a 6-cylinder rambler years ago and I couldn't get it to go faster than 35 mph, except downhill. (Found that I was traveling on three cylinders.) So I can imagine that the rambler experience can and does lead to cultism. :) I think Mr. Furrow is right- as a general thing, the older crowd has more stamina, more enthusiasm, and is more into the 'swing' of it than the younger ones. I can illustrate that with my own daughter's crowd- ya' never heard so many people who are "so tired. It's almost 11 o'clock" or 9:30 or whatever. I'm almost 67 and if there's music happening, I still don't get tired. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Nov 02 - 07:06 PM We need less sleep as we get older anyway. (Give or take the odd teatime kip - but much past midnight young people just fade away compared to oldies.) And probably have more awareness of time passing, and that it makes sense make the most if it. |

Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Nov 02 - 09:21 PM "BEEP-BEEP" by the Playmates can be read and heard here. Considering the Morris Minor, the Nash Rambler Metro isn't too funny. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Gurney Date: 10 Nov 02 - 10:33 PM Batgoddess and catspaw49; we sure do understand the connection, as we built both the Moggie Minor and the Nash Rambler 4cyl, the latter under licence. The badge on the Nash read "Built by Austin of England." Long time ago, now, and I was in the trade then. Ah, memories. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Nov 02 - 06:14 AM I used to drive a Morris Minor 1000 - for it's time it was a great little car. The engine became the BMC 'A' series and was used in many models: A35, A40, MG Midget, Austin-Healey sprite, Marina 1.3 and of course mounted transversely in the original Minis and Metros. I Also had the misfortune to drive an AUSTIN/NASH METROPOLITAN what a load of CRAP - the worst performance, road holding, brakes and driving position of any vehicle that I've ever tried - including the Sinclair C5 ! |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 11 Nov 02 - 06:19 AM Well, around my piece of the planet, "groove band" contra music has practically taken over, and the youngun's swing it up with the oldun's just fine! |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Willie-O Date: 11 Nov 02 - 06:39 AM The last two dances I played--I don't play a lot--were a rather dispirited and small group of older contradancers in the U.S, and the customary, all-ages-any-weather but mostly-young-folks Blue Skies Square Dance which were high-energy as usual. So I don't think its an age thing. Must be a nationality thing. W-O small-r rambling is hazardous to your health this week, it's deer hunting season |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: GUEST,Walking Eagle Date: 11 Nov 02 - 09:09 PM I personally think that the younguns are too embarrassed to 'let go,' and have a rip snortin' good time! They think just a tad too much of themselves. Well, they'll get over it. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Hrothgar Date: 12 Nov 02 - 03:17 AM Older people are smart enough to have a nap in the afternoon. I know it's the only way I make it through a folk festival these days. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Nov 02 - 04:45 AM I've never had any trouble having a nap in the afternoon - it's waking up for the evening that's difficult ! |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 12 Nov 02 - 10:13 AM Today I saw a bus with an advert for a fake antique furniture place, with the slogan "Old is the New New". A straw in the wind. Come you sons and you daughters Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understanf. Your mothers and fathers Are beyond your command Your new road is steadily aging. So get onto the old one Or you can't lend a hand For the times they are a'changin'. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 12 Nov 02 - 08:58 PM The forty-hour week seems to be a thing of the past. Homes in safe neighborhoods are so expensive now that mothers and fathers must both work. There's work, housework, childcare, car-care, etc to be done. The younger generation is probably just tired. |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: GUEST,Shonagh Date: 13 Nov 02 - 05:04 AM I dont think its an age thing at all! My friends and I (17+) are always on the go when theres a ceilidh or session or whatnot. Take a few weekends ago for example: my band were playing a ceilidh and there were a fair mixture of different ages and styles of dancing. In the end, we all mixed through and a great time was had by all! In fact, in this case, it was the younger folk who managed to stay up later!I think we go to bed about 5am! I think alot of people my age are too embarrased to go to ceilidhs,I havent a clue why though! They are ace fun! |
Subject: RE: Is it an age thing?? From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 13 Nov 02 - 07:25 AM I think it's a rambler thing. This is the "hiking" [American parlance] group I belong to: Foyle Ramblers |
