The song is called "The Peat Bog Soldiers" ("Moorsoldaten"), a WWII concentration camp song. Pete Seegar did it, on "Strangers and Cousins", but I don't know of any Irish group that has done it.

So did the Maritime group from the 70's Ryan's Fancy.

My favorite is the a capella version by The Black Family. (Shay, Michael, Martin, Francis and Mary Black.) It appears on their 1989 CD called Time for Touching Home.

Is it originally in German or in Yiddish? I remember Ryan's Fancy doing it but in English. mg

Mary, it was originally in German; written at the Borgermoor camp in 1933 by (first name unknown) Esser and Wolfgang Langhoff, music by Rudi Goguel.

Ref: "Yes We Sang, Songs of the Ghettos and Concentration Camps",
c. 1985.

I learned it from the Paul Robeson recording on his collection, "Songs of Free Men."

The Ian Campbell Folk Group recorded this in the '60's, I think. And I suspect that this is where many of the Irish groups heard it.
