Subject: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: GUEST,L Date: 10 Nov 02 - 09:13 PM Can anyone recommend this CD? Complete title is "Universal Soldiers: Songs of Peace and Protest"? It has a couple of Billy Bragg songs, one by Mary Black, another by June Tabor. |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: GUEST Date: 10 Nov 02 - 09:55 PM Anyone? I'm trying to compile a list of contemporary CDs for peace activists to use as inspiration. Something beyond one more yawning version of "We Shall Overcome". This CD, other CDs, anything you've got is greatly appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: GUEST Date: 11 Nov 02 - 09:27 AM Thanks katlaughing! In doing some searching on the web last night I also came across information on a new compiliation CD to be release in Britain at the end of the month, called "Peace Not War" by the Stop the War Coalition in London. It will be available from this website: http://www.peace-not-war.org/ which bills itself as "...an international network of musicians raising funds for the global peace movement, putting music out there to inspire people towards non-violent action against the War on Terror." It will include contributions by Ani Di Franco and Billy Bragg. |

Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: GUEST,mg Date: 24 Oct 06 - 11:14 PM THere is a great one, truly truly great, called Peace Call by WOodie Guthrie..discovered in a book and recorded for first time, so she says, by Eliza Gilkyson or some such name. She sings with Iris Dement and Nanci Griffiths and Patty Larking..probably misspelling all their names..but it is awesome. mg |

Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: eddie1 Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:14 AM I think "Last Night I had The Strangest Dream" recorded seperately by Pete Seeger and The Weavers, probably also by Ed McCurdy who wrote it, is the greatest peace song ever. Not clever, no wonderful solutions, just a dream - if only! Eddie |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: oldhippie Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:51 AM Yes, Guest L, the "Universal Soldiers" 3CD boxed set is very good. It was first released as "Poppies". Both now OOP. Another good compilation is "Songs For Peace" Rounder #4015. For current material, I recommend "songsforchange.com" or "strikeforpeace.org" to start. |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: Snuffy Date: 25 Oct 06 - 09:13 AM The version of Ed McCurdy's Strangest Dream in the DT has additional verses apparently added by Linda Hirschorn: When I awoke, twas but a dream, and peace a dirty word I tried to tell them of my dream, but not a word they heard And then I got me fighting mad, and I knew just what I'd do I'd fight nonviolently for peace, until my dream came true. I also thought the song needed another verse and wrote this: And still they fight, and still they bomb And still the children scream How many more must die before It isn't just a dream |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: Darowyn Date: 25 Oct 06 - 09:20 AM Don't forget the wonderful anti war songs that Phil Ochs wrote in the Vietnam war era. "I ain't marching any more" "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven any more" etc etc. A more peaceful song, which I love, is Pete Seeger's "Rainbow Race" Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: Greg B Date: 25 Oct 06 - 02:14 PM Too bad about the choice of the 'Universal Soldier' title. I believe that that song was one of the things behind young men coming back from Viet-Nam being jeered, spit at, and worse. To add insult to the injury of having gotten dragged over there in the first place. Some really muddled thinking in that lyric. |

Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: GUEST,ifor Date: 25 Oct 06 - 03:39 PM That stuff about Vietnam vets coming back to be spat at and jeered is a lot of right wing propoganda. Having lost their war with a million vietnamese slaughtered the right has been busy ever since rewriting the history of the war and the protests against it. I do, however, remember thousands of vets in uniform and on crutches etc throwing their medals and commendations at the White House in disgust at what they were ordered to do in Vietnam. The protest was organised by Vietnam Veterans Against The War.The year was 1971. ifor |

Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: oldhippie Date: 04 Apr 10 - 09:29 AM I have a question about a cut on disc 1. Track 9, "Abraham Martin & John", the singer is listed as "John Wilks", but the vocal seems to be female. Any ideas who the vocal really is? |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: open mike Date: 04 Apr 10 - 09:25 PM Universal Soldier is a song by Buffy St. Marie I presume that song is included in this collection? Flag Decal is by John Prine |
Subject: RE: Universal Soldiers: Songs Of Peace... From: oldhippie Date: 05 Apr 10 - 07:20 AM Yes, open mike, Buffy's song is included, sung by Donovan. |
