PATRICK STREET
Beverley Picture Playhouse, 28th Nov 02, 7.45pm

Ireland's living legends set the ball rolling for Beverley Folk Festival's year around series of events

A series of promotional concerts in Beverley and the area are planned, starting off with a concert by one of Ireland's most legendary folk bands. The concert will set the ball rolling for an exciting year of events featuring leading national and international artists, as well as local performers. These will lead up to a major celebration over the festival weekend.

Patrick Street have already achieved massive cult status amongst lovers of Irish folk music. The all-star, legendary, Irish supergroup features the superb fiddle playing of Kevin Burke (ex Bothy Band), the accordion wizardry of Jackie Daly (ex De Dannan), the haunting vocals plus mandolin, harmonica and bouzouki playing of Andy Irvine (ex Planxty) and the fine guitar playing of Ged Foley (The House Band).

As was quoted in Folk Roots magazine "this is traditional music of the highest order, played by masters of their instruments. Irish music as good as you're likely to get it…!" Whether playing old-timey reels, beautiful ballads, a set of Kerry polkas or originals, Patrick Street always deliver with passion and intensity.

Will be there, Hannah, along with large contingent of White Horse Folk Club.

Does this mean that Adastra are hooked into Mudcat now? Shit, fellas, we better watch what we're saying if it all starts getting back to Chris Wade. Hehehe. Oh, pass her my regards btw.

Pete

Glad to hear it!

Not hooked into Mudcat as far as I know - as I'm helping to co-ordinate the festival promotional concerts, I'm trying to advertise them in as many places as I can! Please pass the word around about the concert - cheers!

Hannah

Does Jackie Daly still swing his legs while he's playing?

Go see them, they're alright (the great English understatemet strikes again)!

For those of us who can't drop everything, whip out the credit card & jet over, I hope that there will be a live recording of this. I believe the "cult" reference is a popular slang term meaning that the band has a following which is not in the general mainstream of CD purchasers & concert goers around the planet, and, while they might be rarely heard on public radio stations, the band or music would be known as one not having air time on the majority of popular music radio stations. In the olden days we might have said that the band has an "underground following" or perhaps the band is an "underground hit."

Splendid evening it was too. Andy Irvine has a new bouzouki, much to my son Alex's disappointment (he had been looking forward to hearing the Guitar shaped one), Jackie swung his legs, and Kevin and Jed were as cool as ever. Thanks for a great evening, fellas.

Splendid indeed. Mese'n, Bloke in the Corner, Mr and Mrs ET and Humberside Whistles (D Division) had a braw time of it. The Found Harmonium was sublime. And we caught the guys in the boozer afterwards

I've got a note from me mum excusing me from the Sun, Peter, as I'm doing 'good works' down in Essex for the weekend. And I really wanted to come and support the session. Next time, I hope.

Kaleea - Patrick Street did record a CD live at their last concert in Beverley. I was sorry to miss them this time, but I can't be everywhere in this musically frantic neck of the woods.

But Mags and I will be at the Sun on Sunday, Pete!

I love Andy Irvine, whom I have seen live, not PS, only their first two albums, which did not a lot for me. I've never seen Steeleye Span, for example, live, tho I think they have soul. It's all in the mind and we all have our own minds.

Anyway enjoy the concerts.
