Subject: RE: Piano music for Molly Malone From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Nov 05 - 06:01 PM Sheet music of "Cockles and Mussels" by James Yorkston, later aka "Molly Malone," came out in 1884 in England (and earlier in Scotland); but no copies have turned up in American online repositories. See link by IanC (above) for history of the song. In other words, it is long out of copyright, but one might have to buy a copy of recently printed (and of course copyright) sheet music to get the (probably re-invented and revised) piano music. The original does not seem to be in print anywhere. Music (but incomplete) may be found in: Fireside Book of Folk Songss pp. 22-23 Many school song books, including: Music for Living, Book 6, Around the World, 1950s, p. 167, Silver-Burdett Exploring Music 6, Teacher's ed., 1960s, pp. 38-39, Holt, Rinehart and Winston. Mistakenly called an Irish folk song in these books and usually correctly titled "Cockles and Mussels." |
Subject: RE: Piano music for Molly Malone From: Helen Date: 12 Nov 05 - 04:24 PM Hi William, Welcome to Mudcat. It's a friendly and helpful community based around a shared love of music. Please take your time and look around the other threads and also the home site. Regarding your request, at Mudcat, generally, we are very aware of copyright issues and most of us are reluctant to photocopy copyrighted music and send it to people. Another alternative is to do a search for sheet music for piano for Molly Malone. www.Google.com is a good search engine and the search term I would use (including double quotes) is: "sheet music" piano "Molly Malone" The results will show sites where you can download a copy of the sheet music for a small fee i.e. the cost of the sheet music, or buy the sheet music, or if you are lucky there will be a scanned copy of the music that you can copy as an image file and then print from your computer. I hope this helps, Helen |

Subject: RE: Piano music for Molly Malone From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 18 Nov 02 - 12:03 PM The key of Eb happens to be a very singable key for many people, and it's much easier to play flats than sharps. Since the chord symbols are all there this arrangement can be easily transposed and added to. Thanks MMario for a great site. |

In the meantime, here is a history of the song, which is verified in the threads. Somebody once threatened a Gaelic version, but it never appeared as far as I know. Cheers! Ian |
Subject: RE: Piano music for Molly Malone From: daithi Date: 15 Nov 02 - 04:27 AM Does anybody have lyrics to Molly Malone in Irish? I came across a version some while ago, but forget where - the words were not the same as the english version at all - I believe someone wrote virtually a new song about Molly, but it fitted the tune well enough. Any offers ? |
