The title in my book is "Poor Lil' Brack Sheep"...copyright 1900 by E.O. Excell... Book is 'Make His Praise Glorious'....says it was written by Ethel Maude Colson and Lucy Rider Meyer

POOR LIL' BRACK SHEEP

"Poor lil' brack sheep that stray'd away
Done los' in de win' and rain
An'de shepherd he say:"oh, hirlin'
Go and find my sheep again."
An de hirlin' froun, "Oh, Shepherd,
"Dat sheep am brack and bad.."
But de Shepherd, he smile like de brack sheep
Wuz de onliest lamb he had"

"An' he say, "O hirelin', hasten!
For de win' an' de rain am col'
An dat lil' brack sheep am lonesome
Out dere so far from de fol'".
An' de hirelin froun, "O Shepherd,
Dat sheep am old and grey."
But de Shepherd he smile like de brack sheep,
Wuz fair as de break ob day.

An he say, "o hirelin', hasten"
Lo, here is de ninety an' nine,
But dere way off from de sheepfol',
Is dat lil' brack sheep of mine."
An' de hirelin froun, "O Shepherd,
De rest ob de sheep am here"
But de Shepherd he smile like de brack sheep,
He hol' it mostes' dear.

An' de Shepherd go out in de darkness,
Where de night was col' and bleak,
An de lil' brack sheep, he fin' it,
An he lay it agains' his cheek.
An de hirelin' froun, "o, Shepherd,
Don' bring dat sheep to me."
But de Shepherd, he smile, an' he hol' it close,
An' de lil' brack sheep is me!

(last line repeated all the way thru in the book as a sort of 'refrain') the tune given is a 'rough' approximation of what we all sing now, close enough to see the resemblance. ^^

Bill---I finally found this thread! Thank you! The notes for the new CD (which will have a concert version of this song on it) are with the graphic designer as we speak. So this new info won't be in the booklet. Sure am glad to have this though!

Here's the tune - I'll also send it to Mudcat MIDIs. Sure doesn't sound like Art's "Master of the Sheepfold" to me- can anybody post a tune for "Sheepfold?"

This is a VERY late post to this thread but I stumbled across "Poor lil' brack sheep in "The Best Loved Poems of the American People" P.313, attributed to Ethyl M. C. Brazelton. (Her maiden name I found out elsewhere was Colson). Later I found in "The World's Best Loved Poems," P.144, the same poem, (minus the 2nd & 3rd stanzas), attributed to Paul Laurence Dunbar, considered the first great American black poet. Now I've learned the poem was written by Colson/Brazelton AND Lucy Rider Meyer but I learn elsewhere that Meyer wrote 6 poems and none of them are named "Poor lil' brack sheep." I really like the poem, especially the longer version, but I'm going nuts figuring out if anybody wrote it.

Unnecessary answers (done in another thread, I think). A note here may be useful.
Joe's request for a tune for "De Massa ob de Sheepfol' by Sarah Pratt McLean Greene-
Sheet music is in American Memory. Music by John Kimball Reynolds.
c. 1895.

Lyr. Add: POOR LIL' BRACK SHEEP
by S. A. F.

Poor lil' brack sheep, dat stray'd away,
Don los in de win' an' rain.
An' de Shepherd He say, "O hirelin',

An' de hirelin' frown,
"O Shepherd, dat sheep am brack and bad."
But de Shepherd He smile like de lil' brack sheep
Is de onliest lamb He had
Is de onliest lamb he had.

An' he say, "O hirelin' hasten!
For de win' an' de rain am col'.
An' de lil' brack sheep am lonesome
Out dere so far from de fol'.
An' de hirelin' frown,
"O Shepherd, dat sheep am ol' an' gray."
But de Shepherd he smile like de lil' brack sheep
Wuz fair as de break ob clay (day?)
Wuz fair as de break ob day .

An' He say, "O hirelin', hasten!
Lo, here am de ninety an' nine.
But dere way off from de sheep-fol'
Is dat lil' brack sheep ob mine."
An' de hirelin' frown,
"O Shepherd, De rest ob de sheep am here."
But de Shepherd He smile like the lil' brack sheep
He hol' it the mostes' dear.
He hol' it the mostes' dear.

An' de Shepherd go out in de darkness.
Where de night was col' an' bleak.
An' de lil' brack sheep he fin' it
An' lay it against His cheek.
An' de hirelin' frown
"O Shepherd, Don' bring dat sheep to me."
But de Shepherd He smile an' He hol' it close,
An' de lil' brack sheep-- is me!
An' de lil' brack sheep-- is me.

Ethel Maud Colson Brazelton is cited as author (see RhymeCon, above).

Date written, 1906.
I haven't found a biography.

Included in Hazel Felleman, "Best Loved Poems of the American People," 1936, Doubleday.

It appears as a newspaper clipping with "Uncle Tom's Story of His Life, An Autobiography of the Rev. Josiah Henson," with a forward by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
London, Christian Age 1876.
Source and date of the clipping or why it is placed with the text of the Autobiography in the Google "ebook" is not stated.

Tomorrow I will re-scan the song and post an image in at least one... maybe two.. new spots.

I would guess that the song was written 1895-1900. but haven't found anything earlier than your date.

Can't find a bio of her.
