My countrymen helped liberate them in 1944-45.

The Netherlands is a wonderful place, with genuinely friendly, helpful people. The gave us Genver (Dutch gin) They gave us good cigars! Some wonderfully strong beers. They gave the UK the insight into canal construction and land drainage enabling us to recliam East Anglia and Lincolnshire from the swamps using their engineers and skills.

Unfortunately they also gave the world the word apartheit, and concentration camps, invented in the Boer war. But, they gave the US many immigrants and the pilgrim fathers who came to England first before setting off to America. They gave us the Dutch East Indies company and also had a massive input into the slave trade-probabbly saving Britain from becoming so involved. But this is much to their shame. They gave us songs written about Van Deimans land But, unfortuately, they gave the UK King Billy of Orange, whose legacy still lives on!!!!!

They let us visit their brown cafe's (if you have a mind) and show us that tolerance is quite a good thing with their sense of liberty and freedom. They give us the worlds biggest outdoor rave (if you want to go!!)

The best and safest place in the world for cycling.Kicked Spain's butt good and hard in the 16/17th? century

And they are giving us next years Euro gathering!!!!

It's a bit unfair blaming the South African Dutch for the concentration camps in the Boer War.These were set up by the British, and the Boers were the people inside.

Eating chocolate cake and reading the Guardian in the nude? Sounds very messy. You need two hands for the Guardian, so it sounds a bit complicated too.

They've got some good music, but they tend not appreciate it or play it much.

Corrie Ten Boom and her book The Hiding Place and her incredible spirit.

Their absolute passion for the arts and funding. I don't know if this is still intact, but I do know an American artist who was well supported, as a resident of there, on a government plan. When my brother was there they fell all over themselves to be kind, enthusiastic, and welcoming just because he said he was a composer. They told him to come back if the US didn't recognise his talent!

Just saw a program which chronicled their cutting edge technolgies in claiming land from the sea and making it arable.

A genuine interest in being environmentally conscious...more bicycles than cars, thousands of bikes parked in the city and for rent. It was fascinating!

Panekoeken, cookies, and many whole grain breakfast cereals--They also put some of us up after the Edict of Nantes was revoked--

Their society sets an example for patient tolerance of those who have
differing tastes, cultures, or life styles(though we tend to misconstrue their tolerance for acceptance or even endorsement)--

Also we have to appreciate their excellent English diction, even if when it accompanies a less than perfect understanding of the language itself--the classic example being the Dutch party guest who, when asked what she did for a living, replied with a perfectly straight face, "I fuck sheep." (Apparently, this word is a perfectly respectable Dutch word that means "breed")--

In 1891 a certain Dr. Scholl was on a sales campaign across The Netherlands. Over from Hoboken, he was attempting to get the good millers interested in his new range of "Lick & Stick" adhesive pads for repairing the holes in the sails of the windmills.
Unfortunately, due to poor research by his R&D dept. back in Hoboken ( the wife ), the Dr. was unaware that the millers rubbed oil into the sail material and hence the pads failed to adhere. And this leads to an aside on a little known industry there.
The millers use herring oil because of its log-term weatherproof capabilities. And its not your everyday herring oil.
No, they set aside the mature male herrings and highly trained staff milk the oil from a hidden gland.

Anyway, slinking home to Hoboken broken there was enough of the entrepreneur left in the Dr. to notice all these Dutchmen sitting on benches, outside pubs, with their wooden shoes off and rubbing calloused feet.
An industry was born, the Dutch created another American millionaire.

Revived or gave a career to Barry Foster in the 1970s crime show "Van Der Walk" (or something along those lines): the crime fighter drank Stell Artois ... which I believe is Belgian beer. So, if you count the Flemish population of Belgium, the Dutch also gave us Vlaams (Flemish), fine chocolates, great art (Reubens et al in Antwerpen), a third way of spelling proper nouns in Belgium (there are signs in Vlaams/French and German which can be very different ... Luik versus Liege). Perhaps one place in the world where orange is an acceptable color for daily clothing or cars. Oh my God, the ... DAF ... Maybe even the Dutch Cap ... Gouda cheese. When not producing engineers, Delft pottery. The also helped to clear the fens in the UK ... Ice skating?

Cheers,

khandu - You are clearly an unheralded genius...or a madman. There is DEFINITELY a place for you on the board of the WSSBA.

I reprint below the shocking revelations about the Dutch, revelations which we would have no knowledge of if not for khandu...

THE DUTCH CONSPIRACY FILES:

No No No! It is a conspiracy but not for the reasons suggested. The deaths were orchestrated by the Dutch! Yes! The Dutch! "Why?" you ask. For diversion!
Every year the Dutch push the dikes out a wee bit farther, given them more land. But where does the water go? Yes! It rises higher upon our shores and the shores of every place on Earth! We are getting smaller, while the Dutch are growing larger. Eventually, their land will be the size of North America! Sure, it will take forever, but the Dutch are very patient and long-suffering, as well as long-sighted!

To sway attention from their diabolical activity, they create diversions throughout the world! They were the ones responsible for the fill in the blank! And they did it to draw attention from themselves!

Maybe NOW I will finally be considered for "Man of the Year"!

khandu

My God -your right -it is the Dutch!!! You only have to look at the East Coast of England to realise that coastal erosion is allowing our soil to be swept across the North Sea . Its making Rotterdam enormous!!! (I shall begin to take counter measures -I will never wear orange in public and ban Edam cheese from my household- fight back England - the enemy is amongst us!!!!

Living on the East coast of England and having observed the erosion, I have to agree with the Dutch conspiracy theory. Like Linda, I need to take action but the problem is I never wear orange in public and hate Edam cheese already... maybe I should behead any tulip that shows its face in the garden I guess they may be Dutch spies...
Jon

Nope. Khandu's right. It WAS the Dutch. I can see it clearly now. Their evil plan has been right there all along, encoded in "The Low Low Lands Of Holland" (my television sends me messages too).

When the "press gang" comes to take away the new husband, what he doesn't realise is that they are not British but DUTCH, and have come to carry him off to the low low lands of Holland so they can draft him into fighting on THEIR side: the "enemy" is his own people. How diabolical! Gives new meaning to the old saying "We have met the enemy and he is us."

khandu, I think you definitely get my vote for "Man of the Year". And I think you deserve a Nobel Prize or something, too. How ever did you manage to uncover this dastardly master plan of theirs?

And all those cutesy-pie stories like the little fellow saving the dyke by inserting his finger in a small hole... obviously meant to cover up child labour. Windmills, tulips... wooden shoes ! They are fiendishly clever at disguising their intent to rule the world. Look at what they have done with the "Global Warming" diversion to avert our eyes from their relentless reclamation of the sea ! God help us all.

Oh please...
How can you all be so gullible. Of course it was *through* the Dutch, but it was aliens influencing them with mind control. They want to cover the earth in water so they can have it for water sports tournaments. What do you think global warming is all about?

Sheesh

;D

David Icke warned us all about this years ago but nobody woyld listen! (www.davidicke.com)

Khandu old friend, I am indeed, just this once, humbled at your brilliance! When in most times I find you with all the luminescence of a dead lightning bug in a Mason jar, here I feel you have lit up the darkness like the flames from one of your weekly cross burnings or a blast from a flared-off popcorn and beer fart.

I seriously doubt this will make you "Man of the Year" as your genital equipment is even smaller than Shatner's which can only be seen with an electron microscope and will disqualify you from the competition. But for this one brief and shining albeit stench ridden moment, this is your personal Camelot.

Spaw

Also consider this: The wooden shoes are called sabots. They want to usher in a new age...the Sabot Age. Do you see the subliminal here? Sabot Age...Sabotage!!!
They are sabotaging the rest of the world for their benefit!

"knock, knock" "Who's there?" "Amsterdam" "Amsterdam who?" "Amsterdam door, I am tired of knocking!"

For Spaw: clicky thang

khandu

There's more, but I think that's enough so people get the picture. This is what I call a BIG story!

- LH

What several folks seem to ignore is that tulips came from Constantinople. Holland just imported them and got Tulipomania when they (the tulips) got a viral infection that "broke" the color and created vast differences in hues. Bulbs sold for exhorbitant amounts and it all ended in a spectacular financial crash.
