I just happen to live in Gordon's home town. Orillia, Ontario. It's a little frustrating though when he plays here once a year and I still have to go to Toronto to see him. He pops in once in a while at the Mariposa Folk Fest.

Gordon lights up the nightTreats fans to all his classics including Rainy Day People and Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
By JANE STEVENSON

Gord mined some serious gold on Thursday night at Massey Hall.

That would be legendary Canadian folk singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. He kicked off the first of four nights at the treasured venue (a tradition of his since 1967) with a sold-out show that he packed with hits and crowd favourites.

It was astonishing, really, to hear them all in one sitting: Rainy Day People, Beautiful, Carefree Highway, Sundown, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, If You Could Read My Mind, Early Morning Rain, along with Cotten Jenny, Alberta Bound, In My Fashion, Baby Step Back, and Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

And even if Lightfoot's voice and body weren't what they once were -- he turned 68 yesterday and got a night-before birthday serenade from the crowd -- the spirit was definitely still there.

Thin and frail-looking with a clipped, nasal, vocal delivery, Lightfoot has an easy smile. He had more than a few good stories to tell -- the one about Elvis Presley changing a word in his cover of Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain was repeated Thursday night -- and often delivered an infectious thumbs-up after a s

I know that "Red" Shea has worked with other people, but what about John Stockfish and Terry Clements? I have only heard of them through the works of Gordon Lightfoot. Are any of these people touring with him this year?

BTW, you can tell how good Lightfoot's songs are by the way Tony Rice knocks 'em out of the ballpark.

Jack... it's 60 years of age for Canada Pansion. But, it's based on what you paid in. Now, the old age pension is similar in that it ain't squat. If you are coming home for the old age, you have to be back for ten years to get it.

Anyway, I dare say Gordy doesn't really need either. On accounta he was/is so darn good.

Not on tour at this time due to extended recovery period from illness. In radio interview on September 30, 2003, said he hopes to return by early 2005.

There has been a collection of his songs released
recently by North Blues / Borealis records: "Beautiful"
It has been rated 34 on the radio airplay charts
up from 50 the previous week. This is a marvelous
birthday present to have his songs heard by many
listeners. The tunes are sung by Canadian artists
and it is wonderful to remember his wonderful work!
I recently read on his web site that he hopes to be
back to performiong again after another year of
recuperation. Happy healing to you, Gordon!
Hope you will be able to perform again soon!
I especially hope you will be able to play
for your home town audience, since you were
hospitalized and did not get to play there.
Sending visions of strength and vigor to
cheer you.

Here in Canada, we've long been aware of what a national treasure Gordon Lightfoot is.

Gordon Lightfoot has already received at least one honorary degree from a Canadian university: a Doctor of Laws degree from Trent University in Peterborough, in the spring of 1979:

Trent U. Honoray degree recipients

He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986.

As well, he was inducted into The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame last year:

CCMA Hall of Fame Announcement

He has also been honoured by the Canadian Government, with the Order of Canada in 1970, and the Governor General's award in 1997 (that's as close as you can get to knighthood over here).

More info in his biography.

What greater honours do you think we can award him, Beer?

Cheers, Hester

Yes, I have good news about Lightfoot. There was a brief mention of him in the Toronto Star, maybe a week ago, saying that after weeks in intensive care and several operations to stop internal bleeding he is "out of the woods" and on the mend, expected to make a full recovery. Let's hope so.

Have not heard on his health, but sure wish some University would recognize and honour him before it is to late. Such as a Doctrine for his musical contribution. How about it Canadian Universities?

A Grand birthday to you, Sir!
