Subject: BS: Plano, Dallas Texas - folk music/shops?
From: GUEST,Julie B

My partner is coming to Dallas for a week next Friday (Nov 22nd - Nov 30th) - Plano to be exact. He's recently discovered and fallen in love with, of all instruments, the melodeon. As he will not be able to take this with him (he has too much hockey kit to carry!) he may get withdrawal symptoms. Just out of interest, are there any folk music shops (particularly any that deal with melodeons) and venues that Mudcatters know of in the Plano area?
Julie B
P.S. Yes, he is going to at least one Dallas Stars match (the one against the NY Rangers) during his stay!

Sorry...forgot to mention that he is coming from Milton Keynes, Bucks, UK.

well please send him to the Tipperary Inn on Fri Nov 22. It is a short drive from Plano (20 minutes) and a modest cab fare. The Tipp is one of Dallas's best pubs ... and I'll be playing there, maybe with a friend or two. All the details are available at the link above. There are also a couple of sessions at the Tip he may find enjoyable; Sunday afternoons they do a Texas sort of folk song jam session (I believe they get going about 3PM) and on Wed evenings they do a Celtic session (about 8PM 'til late).

Melodeon? In Plano?? Hmm, that might be more difficult. I'll see what I can find.

Thanks for that Jed. From what you say, can I assume from what you say that melodeons are relatively rare in the USA?!

They're not unknown, Julie -- I heard PJ Swann wailing on one just beautifully a couple of months ago, in SFO.

For the Dallas area you might want to try PMing Áine who lives right nearby in Arlington, I believe... she's been brushing herself up as a Mando queen of late but she might know about where a melodeon could be found.

Regards,

A

I made a connection between Plano and Milton Keynes. Would it be that the company he works for is headquartered in Plano with a significant office in MK (Wavendon Tower?)?

I also work for such a company. I'm based in Derby, occasionally visit Plano and play the melodeon. Unfortunately I'm in Indianapolis at the moment so can't get to a Plano session!

I wouldn't know where you woudl find a Melodeon in Dallas/Plano. I just visited a music shop today that is going out of business. They were a big chain (Mars Music) - but these big store stick to mainstream gear.

I hope to see him at the Tipp - please do tell him to say hello if he stops by.

Thanks Jed, Amos & Mitch
Mitch - Good gues but no, Nicks trip is actually pleasure, rather than business. He's staying with a friend he met at a hockey camp up in Toronto a year or two back.
Jed - Nick says he will definitely say Hi if he comes to the Tipp, although as he only arrives tomorrow he might not make it. Thanks for the info.

Well, if he is around on Sunday I have a show in Fort Worth on Sunday. It should be a great show. I've got a very good fiddler playing with me. It's a CD Release Show and we'll be doing quite a few songs from my new record and some from previous releases. We'll run a video and recorded tracks from 5PM 'til 6, then I'll be doing 2 sets from 6 'til about 8 or 830. I expect about 150 to 200 people.

Let's see if I can do this right. Here are the details:

Jack Londons Olde San Francisco Saloon
1217 Oakland Boulevard, Fort Worth, TX 76103
(817) 451-9228
doors open at 5PM
cover is $5
show from 6PM to 8:30PM

directions take I30 toward Fort Worth
just before you get to downtown Fort Worth take
exit number 18, towards OAKLAND BLVD.
Jack Londons Old San Francisco Saloon is right there at the exit on the NE corner of the intersection of I30 and Oakland Blvd

Dear Julie,

I'd recommend that you go to the Brook Mays music store in Irving, on Highway 183 (sorry, don't know how far that is from Plano; but, as I'm sure you're aware, distance is 'relative' here in Texas - hahaha).

That particular Brook Mays store specializes in 'folk' instruments, so if you and your fella can't find a melodeon there, I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to tell you where you can find one. And don't phone them, go to the store in person -- I've found that that's the best way to find the 'right' person to talk to. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and very, very nice.

I hope yer fella enjoys his stay here in the Mega-Metroplex ;-) and if you can't get to the Tipp to see Jed, I heard that Sara Hickman is going to be a Uncle Walt's Coffee House this weekend for their 20th anniversary celebration.

All the best (and GO STARS!!), Áine
