Subject: clancy family childrens songs From: GUEST,sharon pyne Date: 17 Nov 02 - 06:34 PM I have an old tape of clancy family music for children. It's called "so early in the morning". I would like to get these songs on CD. I'm also wondering if all their lyrics are traditionl or did they write soome of these songs such as Madrine Rua and Bounce Her Up etc. Anyone have any info. Thanks Sharon Pyne |

Hope you can get what you need following this link. http://www.liamclancy.com/recs/early.htm The site showed the playlist is 46(!) songs, so there's no easy answer to your source question. Lots of their material is traditional, some is modified traditional, some composed. You can get a lot of info on any particular song if you use the Search window on the Mudcat homepage, keying in one song title at a time. |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: katlaughing Date: 17 Nov 02 - 11:29 PM Good idea, patty! With a little time on my hands, I decided to look, but I couldn't find anything on either of them. Sharon, I think you'll get a better response by starting a separate thread for each song, so...here's the one for Madrine Rua and, here is the one for Bounce Her Up. Hope this helps. Good luck, kat |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Mar 03 - 02:37 AM I picked this CD up a while back. It's quite a generous collection, although most of the songs are very short. I'll post the track list. Clancy Children / So Early In The Morning-Irish Children's Songs, Rhymes, & Games
It's on the Tradition label, and it's budget-priced. Such a deal. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: GUEST,Nina Date: 08 Jun 13 - 11:42 AM I am looking for the companion book that was mentioned in the liner notes for this wonderful album! I am especially interested in finding the games played by the children to some of these songs. |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: Thomas Stern Date: 08 Jun 13 - 01:05 PM Hi Nina, What information do you have about the book? (title, author, isbn, date, publisher ???). I did not see anything on the Clancy website (see above) that looked like children's songs & game, though the website lists many books. Thanks! Thomas. |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: GUEST,Nina Date: 12 Jun 13 - 02:25 PM Thomas, I'm coming up empty in a search (on the Clancy website as well) as I only have a reference to it in the original 1962 release liner notes towards the end: "Ways for teachers and parents to use this material will be found in a companion book, "So Early in the Morning", which is now being prepared. The book also contains the music to all the songs, with guitar chords, acknowledgments and historical graphical information on the Clancy family." These songs were collected by Diane Hamilton, but I can find little else she has done, though the liner notes refer to several different collections she made. My fear is that the companion book never was completed/published, but I am trying to be hopeful as I really want to use these collected songs/games in my classroom! I've put the question out to the Kodaly Society of Ireland (Kodaly Music Educators are great for collecting folksongs and their games) to no avail to this point. If you can think of elsewhere for me to look, please pass on the information. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: MartinRyan Date: 12 Jun 13 - 02:37 PM There's no sign of a book of that name in the online catalogue for the Irish Traditional Music Archive, which is now complete, as far as I know. I know they have a lot of material related to Diane Hamilton and would be very surprised if they didn't have a copy if it existed. There are other books covering that type of material, particularly that from the Northern Ireland tradition - which Tommy Makem, in particular, would have had from his mother Sarah. Regards |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: MartinRyan Date: 12 Jun 13 - 02:41 PM For an Ulster-Scots collection: Click here Regards |
Subject: RE: clancy family childrens songs From: GUEST,Nina Date: 14 Jun 13 - 10:19 AM Martin Ryan, Thank you for pointing me towards more resources! Do you know if there is a place I can either find recordings or musical notation for the Ulster-Scots collection? I'm a wiz at transcribing, so I'd be happy with recordings. I've already added the Bobby Shafto verses to my one-verse American variant. And, just reading the lyrics brought back the distinct Ulster dialect that took me so long to tune my ear to when I visited. I'll do some perusing through the Irish Traditional Music Archive and see what other gems I may find. Thanks! ~Nina |
