Oh, yes- and I had it again in college when I was studying for music education. It was in one of the elementary music text books we had to get to know, as an example of a partner song. I've never taught it, but it would be fun to try it sometime!

Swinging Along
By Gladys Jacobs
Used by permission of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.

Part 1
Swinging along the open road,
Swinging along under a sky that's clear.
Swinging along the open road,
All in the fall, in the fall of the year.
Swinging along, swinging along,
Swinging along the open road,
All in the Fall of the year.

Part 2
Swinging along the open road,
Under a sky that's clear.
Swinging along the open road,
In the Fall of the year.
Swinging along, swinging along,
Swinging along the open road,
All in the Fall of the year.

Masato, you are one fine searcher! Or were you a Girl Scout? ;>)

I was a Girl Scout, but I didn't learn this song there. I learned it probably twenty years ago from my friend Nan Goland, who I think did learn it in Scouts. We enjoy singing it together, with the words almost exactly as given above, except that the second line of Part 1 goes "Under sky, under sky that's clear." We usually sing it all the way through in unison first -- though we start with Part 2 (the lower part) and then do Part 1 (higher) -- and then break into the two parts. It sounds great and it's really fun to sing, but even though it's supposed to be a hiking song, I'm getting too old to hike and sing -- especially a spirited song like this -- at the same time!

I am totally clueless about posting tunes, but if anyone wants the tune(s) for this great harmony song, PM me and I'll get it to you one way or another.

Cheers, Nancy

i know this is an old post, but i am ever so grateful to find it today!
i am 43; i lived with my mother (due to physical and emotional disabilities) for 15yrs til her passing march of 2015 (comp from breast cancer)...
she taught me this song when i was a teenager, maybe middle school; my whole family (parents, and i'm oldest of 4 girls) sings: church/school choirs, local theatre, and karaoke, lol! neither she, nor any of us girls were ever scouts - closest was my dad, who earned his Eagle in BSA, and was an assistant scout master for the BS troop at our church, but mom spent her youth summers at church camp where SHE learned it!!
none of my sisters ever had an interest in it, often just rolling their eyes at us, LOL...but i LOVED it; i have an affinity (and yes, even a talent, lol) for singing in rounds, and this has easily been one of my favorites! :D i have been sitting here, today, so very, very sad, that not only will i never sing it with her again, but i have never known anyone else (including my own long-time bff who grew up in GSA!!) who knew it or even knew -of- it!! so i found your post through a Google search; i didn't even know til a little while ago that it is from GSA, lol!!
i'm finding an unexpected comfort, knowing that it's not as obscure as i'd feared, so i can easily play it when i want, and that there really is a solid, established source for it; not something that she learned in nursery school, info that may have disappeared long ago, ha!
so THANK YOU for this post about a song that i've loved for most of my life; something that she and i both enjoyed together!
BLESSINGS to you!! <3

I remember singing this song at Camp Kitannawa (spelling?)in Michigan in the summer of 1962 and 1963. It was exactly as Masato posted it above! What wonderful memories it brings back of learning to swim, canoeing in the small lake and singing in the lodge and around the campfire. We girls stayed in cabins and there was a friendly rivalry between us. If I remember correctly, it was a Campfire Girls camp and I earned beads to put on the sash of my uniform. So this song may have been a Girl Scouts song, but the Campfire Girls sang it also! I loved singing this especially because singing in "rounds" produces such a beautiful harmonizing sound. Anyone else remember going to Camp Kitannawa? ????

Apparently my wife learnt it in the guides, in Lancashire UK, in the 1960s.
