I just heard on the news about the nor'easter/ice storm that went through where a bunch of 'Catters live. Is everybody ok?

I live in NW CT and awoke to just a dusting of snow here, but about 15 miles away is Torrington. News reports have it as being among the hardest hit, lots of trees down, roads blocked and schools closed. At one point they were reporting that there were 50 houses WITH power. You know things are pretty bad when they report those with rather than those w/o. Seems like the damage is pretty localized, no fatalities reported as of yet (knock on wood) But the wind is up today and the power company expects that a few people who havve had restored power migh lose it again. They do not expect all service back for another day and a half. SUposed to go down well below freezing tonight so it could be a real pain.
Still could be worse, remeber the ice storm in Quebec last year? (I think it was last year)

Nick

News this am saaid that customers in connecticut without power was down to 50,000 from a high of 192,000 - which is pretty good ; as they also said a lot of the power outages were localized problems (In other words they had LOTS of small problems rather then a couple big ones)

at home lost power for several hours yesterday and about 1.5 hours last night

I live in about the center of the state... near New Haven. We had some black ice reported in the area, but if there was any here in Derby, it was all melted by the time I went out.

Thanks for asking..

The Pookah lives up the road a piece... I think it was allright up there, too..

Jerry

The ice storm missed us in west central VT. It was just wet here yesterday. Raining when we went to bed, 5 or 6 inches wet snow when we got up this morning. And we're in the low part of Vermont, where we get relatively little snow. Killington had up to 9" Saturday night and Sunday, before we got any down here. They must have a whole mess of it by now.

Peter.

Up here in Richmond, ME, it was just a mess of 3 inches of wet snow which we had to shovel away before it froze on the walks and driveway.
Further south in Maine they had it much worse with an inch of frozen sleet on the branches, and the subsequent breaking of tree limbs and power lines.

Good thing that Naemanson moved into this building. He makes a great snow shoveler!

It's too early in the season for this kind of shit!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley, as I pointed out to someone at work this morning. Snow is white and shit is brown. We had a SNOW storm not a SHIT storm.

Of course, once I move to Sicily I don't expect to have to shovel anything for a while.

Naw, then you'll get to stomp grapes instead...lot more fun!

When I called attbi this morning I was routed to a nice young man in Newfoundland. He said they'd just had their first big snowstorm.

I also spoke to friend near the Cape and my daughter near Mystic (CT), and it didn't sound as though it had hit too badly in either place, though the Cape is windy, today.

We got some wet snow with sleet on top. I got it off the porch yesterday while it was still a sloppy mess with a crust. I just beat hell out of the car today and the iceberg fell off. Some of it's still on trees and some trees still are pretty bent over.

Naemie, Re "shit is brown," you never had to suck down a barium milkshake, have you?

Nelson, NH got hit pretty hard with ice that shook the house on Saturday night. Church was cancelled Sunday morning due to no power- but the house was ok except for a temporary blip. More ice and snow last night- there's 4-5 inches of snow, and we lost power for a few hours this morning. Two hour delay from school, too! But the road crews really know their stuff around here and we got around soon enough.

Kendall lost power for e few hours yesterday. I lost it most of the night - e very cold night with three angry cats under the blankets. That was the worst of it. The sun took care of most of the mess today. Tonight - more wind and snow/sleet/rain but no potential disasters. My new home has a separate emergency generator, which, if I can figure out how to get it going, will prevent any further cold nights.
Thanks for asking.

OK here Hollowfox, thanks for the concern. Here in central southern New Hampshire we got snow, rain, sleet, ice & wind. A normal start to a New England winter it's letting us know she's blowing in. Barry

Well we had some very threatening mist coming in from the sea this morning. The Pacific, I mean. But after sunrise it burned off and w espent the afternoon in the low 70's with a gentle breeze incoming most of the afternoon.

Loverly day if a bit short!

Sorcha, sounds like he's got a personal problem! Better than Spotted Dick though!

I'll tell you, I used to love winter when I 1) didn't have a house that might fall apart and 2) wasn't too broke (and/or too cheap) to turn the thermostat up to a reasonable temperature.

When I talked to Caroline Paton Sunday afternoon, she told me they were without power (but obviously, the telephones worked). No idea when (or if) the lights came back on.

Yup, Patons have power again, but it was out for some period of time. Sandy may still be catching up on the threads.

best,
