Subject: Lyr Req: Lyrics to song Motherlode
From: Fishpicker
Date: 18 Nov 02 - 08:13 PM

Perhaps someone of you good folk could supply me with the lyrics to this song Motherlode. The only reference I have for it is a Mustards Retreat CD which has the lyrics in the liner for almost all the album but not for that particular song. It does give the author as Pinney and that's it. Thanks for any help that you can give me.

This one????

Motherlode

Well, I'm down in the motherlode
But I stake no claim yet
Panning for tomorrow's gold
In the stream of consciousness

I'm just a 9 digit number
On a 4 page form
It's hard to be invisible
But your love keeps me warm

(Chorus):
Twisting, twisting in the wind
Like I might get airborne
But I don't know when

And I'm covered with barnacles
They come in through the mail slot
I know it's a fool's diversion
But I want what I haven't got

(Chorus):
Twisting, twisting in the wind
Like I might get airborne
But I don't know when
Twisting, twisting in the wind         (Down in the motherlode)
Should have thought about it         (Down in the motherlode)
When I clipped my wings         (Down in the motherlode)

Down in the motherlode
Down in the motherlode
Down in the motherlode

If not let me know........and I'll look again.

Sorcha, thanks for the response. Unfourtunately thats not the one I'm after, the one I want starts "I've got beggers on my trail, a mean and ragged rail" I think??? sounds like it's in G too. I think those are the right words to start with but I can't make out the entire body of lyrics, perhaps my hearing is failing me in my dotage as well?? I appreciate you trying to find this for me as I haven't had much luck up to now.

                            Best, Greg

RICHARD PINNEY is a fine singer/songwriter. He's also a great guitaist. I know he made LPs for Mountain Railroad Records back in the 70s and 80s. Dick Pinney (as he was known then) was the first person I ever heard do Greg Beown songs----and he did those extremely well.

In recent times he has been in the business side of things folk more than actually performing as much as he once did. He lives and works in the Milwaukee, WI area last I heard. Put RICHARD PINNEY into a search engine and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

The song you want has a chorus something like:

You may know me when I've been blessed,
I'll leave you some and move on with the rest,
Put a light in the hallway,
Leave a key in the door...,
I will leave in jubilation,
Be returning for some more.

The first album I ever had songs on was an anniversary LP called GET FOLKED. It was put out on Mountain Railroad Records and recorded live at the folk club in Rockford, Illinois called Charlotte's Web. Dick had two songs on it also---and this was one of them.

There's a Richard Pinney web site, too, but it doesn't have lyrics.

I tried using Google with several phrases from the quote Art provided above, and did not find any lyrics.

Richard Pinney http://www.richardpinneymusic.com
was a friend and collaborator of Greg's back in the
"old days." They recorded a joint album, Hacklebarney,
in 1974. He plays regularly at the Breman Café in
Milwaukee. http://www.bremencafe.com/gallery/

I used to have that Hacklebarney album, too. I think a former roommate moved out with it. Fortunately, I still have a tape copy. There's some great old Greg songs on it; I wish he still performed some of them.

Don't know if you have found this yet. I'll give you what I remember from Carlottes Web

I've got devils on my trail. A lean and ragged railin to hold me when I'm ailin again.

But if I think in code and find that motherlode. I'll be back on again.

Ch: You may know me when I've been blessed. Well I give you some and move on with the rest
Leave a place by the doorway leave a key by the door and I will leave in jubilation be returnin for somemore

I know your face is froze across. Long ago been frosted over. It looks unreal.
And when I doubt your mind (doubt you're mine??). I'm pulled along by kind of a feelin. It makes me feel.

Ch:

There may be another verse. I'll keep thinking. It's funny I was doing a web search to find the lyrics when I stumbled on this site. I think I have now remembered them. Unless there is a third verse. I'm going to dig out my old albums "Hacklebarney", "Devil Take the Shiny Coins" and "Get Folked" Words may be in the notes. If not, I have a friend who plays this song. I'll check with him for the lyrics..Mike

This song is recorded on dickie lee erwin's Texas Midnight Highway album

I hear a friend in New Mexico sing it and he said he wrote it . . so I performed it for several years and then one evening in Austin, Tex. Rich Brotherton came up to stage and said, "it was great to hear that Dick Penny song, Motherlode"! Will I had been calling it "Beggars" for 10 years . . . ! Anyway, if you can get your hands on this C.D. the lyrics are on it. It's a pretty hard driving country version.

Here's my transcription from the recording at YouTube:

MOTHERLODE
Dick Pinney
As recorded by Mustard's Retreat on "Back to Back" (1995)

1. I've got beggars on my trail, a lean and a ragged railin'
To hold me while I'm ailin' again.
If I think in code, find that mother lode,
I'll be back on again.

CHORUS: You may know me when I've been blessed,
And I give you a song and I'm gone with the rest.
Save a place in the corner, leave a key by the door,
And I will leave in jubilation, be returnin' for some more.

2. But your face is froze across. Long ago been frosted
Over. And it looks unreal.
When I doubt your mind, well, I'm pulled along by kind
Of a spirit. It makes me feel.

REPEAT CHORUS, VERSE 1, AND CHORUS.

[Note: There are subtle internal rhymes here: trail/railin'/ailin' – code/lode – across/frosted – mind/kind.
Accordingly, I have tried to put rhyming words at the ends of lines. It looks awkward in print, but it sounds better than it looks.]

Nice to find some history of this great song. We recorded this in 1992 and it is still one of my favorite songs even though I've got no idea what it's about. It just paints pictures in my mind. The last post is almost exactly what we sang. I have an MP-3 of it but not sure if I can do attchment here.

I forgot I have youtube version by myself with my harmony machine if you'd like to check it out. Also, thanks Jim Dixon for youtube referral. Nice to hear the two versions by Dick Pinney. (And I still don't know what it's about!)

This is so great - I heard this song on the radio somewhere back in the 70's and have never forgotten it, but could never find out who did it.

I'm still not sure who did the recording that I heard, but at least now I know who the author is. The version I heard only differed slightly in the first and second verses:

I got beggars on my trail, a lean and a ragged railin
To hold me, if I cry some more
And if I'm thinkin' cold, I'll find that motherlode
In the hopes that you'll be back again.

You may have known me when I was blessed
When I'd give you something and move on with the rest
Put your face in the corner, leave your keys by the door
And I will go in jubilation, and be comin' back for more.

I realize the first verse I remember doesn't rhyme - but that's how I heard it.

Thanks again

There is a third verse. I heard Joey Leal perform it at the Coffeehouse in Milwaukee and I heard Dick perform it at a jam. Darned if I can remember it or find it anywhere.

Thanks.

Hi! I got this version from Richard some years back. This is the third verse he gave me...

Babe when we first met, you played hard to get
Now you're playin' so hard to keep
If you want to stay with me, you wanted love in 3D
and I want it high wide and deep..

Dick taught me this song at Charlotte's Webb some decades ago, on a scary blustery cold deserted open mic night. I've played it a lot over the years, but had no record of this last verse. Beautiful song. Thanks!
