Subject: two first names-no surname?
From: Mr Happy

creep from paul simon thread.

he's got 2 first names & some other people have two second names but no first names, like harrison ford.

in our global democracy, surely 'twould be better for the names to be shared around, hence Paul Ford & Simon Harrison?

more?

?? I have known several people with the surnames of 'Paul' or 'simon' - likewise several with 'Harrison' as a first name, and several 'Ford' 's' as well.

A name is a name - yes - some are more commonly seen as "first" names and some more commonly seen as surnames - but heck....

Lots and lots of members of the Paul family around here.

For a single name, it helps if its, you know, Bjork, or Sting...not Bill or George, and anything but Sue.

My last name, Cameron, has become a very trendy first name in the past five years. Like, since that Diaz girl got hot.

Elvis doesn't count- he had 2 nanes: Elvis Presley.

or Prince, he's got 2 names: Prince Nelson.

haven't heard of anyone called Plenty!

Its always been common for Scottish clan names to be used as first names. Sometimes for both like MacDonald Macdonald. I'm sure there must have been a Cameron Cameron before now too. So the thread could have been "Two surnames - no first name". Anyone remember MacDonald Hobley on the TV. Shirley is a surname and only became a female first name in 1929. (The first to be given Shirley as a first name were male)

I dated a guy named Robert Francis Howard. People never could figure out what to call him (he went by "Frank").

y'know - I don't think I have ever met someone with the surname of Cameron face to face - but I knew two with that as a first name in the early '70's; one male, one female.

the scots clan thing- not peculiar to there.

lots of members of other cultures in the past had only the clan/tribal name only- no personal names.

or they'd take their fathers given name- as in magnus magnusson [icelandic]

But, Mr. Happy -- you must not have ever read Dick Tracy comic strips. There was B.O. Plenty, Sparkle Plenty and B.O.s wife, uh, what was her name? I once got a Sparkle Plenty doll for Christmas.

Don't let the Welsh into this. They've made the two Christian names thing into an art form, starting with really important people like Barry John and working down.
