I belonged to and was a charter member of Sing-Out Great South Bay on LI, NY in 1968. I still love their songs and quote lyrics from them all the time. "Freedom isn't free. You gotta pay a price, you gotta sacrifice for your liberty". Got thinking about it today when a signal man at a road construction site smiled and waved at each person passing by. :) We need more of this kind of stuff in our world.

I used to be a member of Sing Out Philippines UE (University of the East) Chapter when i was in college. I graduated October of 1970 and I never heard of the group again! I miss the group..if i remember right, our organizer was a certain Atom or was that Atek?? his name slips my mind now as that was a 'million' years ago already! anyway, i agree with GUEST (01-14-14)- i just sang it to one of my daughters this afternoon, while cooking in the kitchen! i told my daughter if there will be a way for me to know if MRE /Sing Out Philippines is still "out there" ..THANK YOU for this opportunity...and i really hope when i go to this page again, i will find the lyrics already printed out here!

by the way, i'd like to thank you for the lyrics of Up, Up with People..i only remembered the first chorus and a little familiar with the rest of the lyrics..and the 'hand gestures' that went with it!

MY SISTER USED TO BE WITH SING-OUT PHILIPPINES. YES, IT'S MORAL REARMAMENT. I STILL SING THEIR SONGS TO MY KIDS. BASICALLY THEIR SONGS ARE "FEEL GOOD" AND BENEVOLENT AND ENCOURAGING. I THINK WE NEED SUCH SONGS NOW.

Toadfrog above connected "Up with People" to "Moral Disarmament." The actual name of the organization was Moral Re-Armament.

Performed this song with Sounds of America (Charlotte, NC) in the late 60's and modified the last verse to read "As their Gods meant them to be" every time. MRA never owned us or told us what to do.

It was associated with Moral Disarmament, a fashionable movement for teenagers in the 50's or 60's. Since UWP is short for up with people, I think you are right. The lyrics are:

UP WITH PEOPLE
(Ralph Johnson Colwell, Walter Paul Colwell, Jr.)

It happened just this morning
I was walking down the street
The milkman and the postman
And policeman I did meet.
There in every window
At every single door I recognized people
I'd never noticed before

CHORUS:
Up, up with people
You meet 'em wherever you go
Up, up with people
They're the best kind of folks we know
If more people were for people
All people everywhere
There'd be a lot less people to worry about
And a lot more people who care
There'd be a lot less people to worry about
And a lot more people who care.

People from the Southland
And people from the North
Like a mighty army
I saw them coming forth
'Twas a great reunion
Befitting of a king
Then I realized people
Were a lot more important than things
CHORUS

Inside everybody
There's some bad and there's some good
But don't let anybody
Start attacking peoplehood
Love them as they are
And fight for them to be
Great men and great women
As God meant them to be.
CHORUS

Now aren't you sorry you asked?

This is the theme song of the travelling music group "Up With People". They sell their albums wherever they appear, or you can order them through their WebSite. You might watch for one of their troupes (they have several) to appear in your area. It's always a great show. I may have one of their tapes somewhere. If I can find it, I'll try to transcribe it. Meanwhile you can listen to it on an Audio File from their website.
