Subject: Waterson/Carthy/Guvnor/Kipper sites
From: Garry Gillard
Date: 25 Nov 02 - 10:24 PM

All of my music sites/pages have gone to a new home:

http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/folk/

The Copper family (ie. Jon Dudley) will create their own new site, but the pages I formerly maintained for the Watersons, Martin and Eliza Carthy, the Kippers, the Guvnor (Ashley Hutchings) and even Joseph Taylor have all gone to Hamburg - to join Steeleye Span and Sandy Denny there.

Thanks and best wishes to Reinhard Zierke.

Garry Gillard

Garry, you did an amazing amount of work on those pages, and I've visited them many times. Thanks.

Thanks also for telling us where they went. I know I would have missed them.

Reinhard Zierke's site as such is available, but there are currently no onward links to any of his folk pages, perhaps since his last update 0830 CET Monday 12 December. What can this mean?

There hasn't been much reaction to the apparent loss of Reinhard Zierke's site, but if it has gone, it's not only five years of my virtual life that went down, it's all his Steeleye Span (and Sandy Denny) stuff that's gone as well as all the Martin Carthy and Watersons lyrics.

No much reaction to the loss of Reinhard Zierke's site: probably most people thought (ad I did) it was a temporary fail, as The Mudcat Café has accustomed us all. It would be a really heavy loss, I wonder how it is that Garry Gillard can't contact Reinhard Zierke and find out. Nothing to do but wait?

Some time ago, I sent Mr. Reinhard Zierke a transcription of Maid On The Shore, from Eliza Carthy's Rough Music. He put the text on the site almost immediately, but as months passed I was wondering why this time the texts of the other songs in Eliza Carthy's cd had not been added on the site as generally occured with the previous cds.

I don't know what that means. I've mailed Reinhard and sahll tell you if I find out what has happened.

One possible reason: We have increasing difficulties at German universities with what we put on the web for everyone's use. It has happened already that if someone makes a power point supported lecture and loads down a picture or two from the web just for a short break in an otherwise dull narrative (let's say a picture of Babbage and his apparatus for the history of computing) and puts the PP in the net as a service for the students that someone who holds the copyright for these pictures sues the university for infringement of copyright. We have been warned that next time the university will make us pay the fine.

I've also mailed Reinhard Zierke, I hope to get an answer. Wolfgang, I think that in case the problem was of the kind you describe, Mr. Reinhard Zierke would have told Garry Gillard, or maybe someone at The Mudcat, in order to find a different solution.

Reinhard hasn't told me anything yet. I'm awaiting a reply to my latest message as we speak.

Thanks, Wolfgang, for the hypothetical explanation. That's what I thought too. I took my own private stuff off my University's server before they made me.

And yes, Kath, I still of course have everything I gave Reinhard - but there's a three-year gap since then.

Also, there's all his Steeleye Span stuff and the Sandy Denny site he was given. Has all that gone forever?

And Reinhard's site was such model of style and economy. I will never be able to design a site like his. I'm too old to learn cascading style sheets, for example.

For Waterson:Carthy there's now an official site - but mine had (has) all the lyrics, which was the main reason I created it in the first place.

Watch this space.

Garry

Garry,
Good luck. Awful to think of all that stuff going missing--although I confess, not being much of a webophile, that your Mudcat notice of the missing sites was the first I knew of their existence. They sound wonderful and truly useful, and I hope they haven't really disappeared because I'd like to explore them. Keep us posted! Kathy

Mr Garry Gillard, I've seen your new site. It seems that you are sure that Reinhard Zierke's site is lost forever. I can't believe you've no way to get in contact with Mr Zierke, and verify what happened. If Wolfgang is right, he could no longer be able to keep the site, but he should own the information that was on the site, and be ready to return it to you, or to someone that is ready to carry it on. I'm perplexed. R

I mailed Reinhard yesterday but haven't had an answer yet. However, even if Wolfgang's theory turns out to be true I can't believe that someone as experienced as Reinhard would be left without a backup of his pages. Don't despair too soon, all may not be lost!

I've just happened on this thread, having discovered that Reinhard's pages had gone missing, and I too have now e-mailed him. If it is a problem with the University providing hosting, we can certainly offer him replacement hosting. I would hate to see that glorious resource, on which both Garry and Reinhard in turn spent so many hundreds if not thousands of hours, lost to the web!

Both of these sites are GREAT, I was only on Reinhardt's site a few days ago. Looking up some info on Watersons, "Sound Your Instruments of Joy" which I was transfering from vinyl to CD for a friend.

Thanks for the link to that archive, nutty. Very helpful.

Roberto, anything you want to send me I'll put on my (new) site. (In fact I already have put one acknowledgement to you.) When and if Reinhard's site reappears (as I have a feeling it will), he'll able to get it off mine - if he hasn't already archived it.

Just a "no news yet" post. I've heard today from Roland Hess at Frankfurt University (the Irish Set Dance man) - he has heard rumours that it was a copyright problem, as Wolfgang suggested, but he hasn't had any response from Reinhard yet either. He's doing his best to find out more, but of course it's a tricky time of year, and Reinhard may be away from home.

I have now heard from Reinhard Zierke. He has indeed taken all the folk material down from his site, but has made the archive available to me directly so that I can continue to upgrade my new site, which, as I've said, I had started to do anyway.

Mr. Garry Gillard, is it possible to know why did Reinhard Zierke take the Watersons' material down from his site?

Despite our conjectures, it appears to be unrelated to copyright matters.

Roberto, I've put your transcription of Eliza Carthy's singing of "Fair Maid on the Shore" here. (This is from Reinhard Zierke's page. A few links won't yet work at the moment.)

Is there anything you or anyone else would like me to put up as a priority?

Garry,
I am very pleased that the English folk material has found a new (Or in this case, old) hoe.
Thank you for hosting this material.
In your correspondence with Reinhard, did the subject of his Steeleye Span archives come up?
Do you have any insights on what he intends to do with that material?

I'm delighted to announce that Reinhard Zierke has restored his folk music pages:

http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/folk/

including the Watersons and other sites I originated. I'll now remove mine once again.
