Thanks for your time and efforts. I was surprised to see "Goodnight Roses" and "Goodnight lilies" in the text. But, NO. Certainly, this "Goodnight Garden" is not what I have been looking for. Again, the one I am looking for must have a title close to "Farewell, My Hometown" in German. Thanks again.

In 1950s, I heard a Chinese version of an old German folk song that starts off with "Good-night, roses; good-night lilies; ....." and ends with "Farewell, my hometown" repeating for three times. I would like to know the title and the composer of the original German song. Thank you very much.

Well... the Swedish singer Zarah Leander recorded a song called "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen", she was a dramatic singer, and she died (natural causes) in 1981: here she is: here she is Is this who you're looking for? Without more details, that's the best I can do!

A few questions for clarity.

1) You are looking for the name of a female singer who died by suicide in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Is that correct?

2) What nationality was she?

3) Did you listen to her on a vinyl record, radio, tape, etc?

4) What language did she sing in?

5) where were you located at the time?

hm. Very little information for finding the singer.

Dramatic like? What does that mean?

"died I think in the seventies". So it might have been the late sixties or the early eighties as well? That gives a range of about 20 years ...

"I think she committed suicide" - so it could be natural death or accident or murder as well.

Could the song be "Weinen" (German for "to cry"/"to shed tears")? (But the only song I can find by that title is sung by Adel Tawil, recorded 2013, so that can't be the one).

What is the name of a female singer who had dramatic like , she died I think in the seventies , I think she committed suicide...I was listening to her 2 decades ago because of my friend at that time , I want to listen to her again , one of her songs is (Vinen), if am not wrong in the spell.

She's also schizo.    The song was originally about two girls Hans Leip was interested in. He combined the names.

It is interesting to see predecessors (with *no* words in common with the recent versions) of Schnitzelbank (at Nr 24) & of Frau Wirtin (at Nr 42). Perhaps those songs are representatives of patterns that were adapted by the various trades?

My great grandmother used to sing a German lullaby to my grandmother and her sister when they were little. It was only years later that she told them it was about a husband who kills his wife, puts her in a gunny sack and throws her in the river. I would LOVE to find this song if anyone has any idea what song I'm referring to. I can only mumble the first few lines of the song, so I do not know how the German lyrics go... otherwise I would type them here for you (as I know it would be of more help in finding the song).

The collection is restricted to songs for journeymen only, telling about their craft - mostly bricklayers and carpenters. Till today some of them still follow an old tradition. After ending their apprenticeship (three years) they wander for three years and a day from one master craftsman to the next, working a time there and learning a lot more of their craft from other masters.
You know them by their typical black working suits and broad brimmed hats they seldom take off. Sometimes they enter pubs, knock the floor with their sticks, and with ritual words ask for a handout to continue their journey. This is not begging!
In the collection is included a lot of amorous affairs - naturally, since these journeymen are young and panting for the girls - sometimes a little bit too dirty for adolescent ears to listen.

My father bought records from Germany and Austria from 1925 to 1936 as a member of the Anglo German Hiking Club.Some from the German Naffi, wonderful music if political in retrospect.Songs are a gem. Hope to clean them to disc and visit this thread again,with list of titles Etc.They have been enjoyed in the UK
