Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Shopping Shanty / Santa Come Back From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Nov 02 - 10:31 AM Linn- Thanks for checking this out with Brian and posting it for all to savor. Apparently I've folk-processed one line in the next to last verse where the rhymes repeat: For old Jack Frost he knew a thing or two, sir, And soon I found me off the road again; 'Cause I'd spent all me money buying presents, And me ol' snow treads was wearin' pretty thin. Subject: Lyr Add: Shopping Shanty / Santa Come Back From: Bat Goddess Date: 27 Nov 02 - 08:14 AM I just heard back from Brian Chadbourne, Portland, Maine, who wrote this marvelous holiday parody of "Paddy Lay Back." What he said was, Of course you can publish the lyrics. I'm glad they're still relevant after all these years! And here they are (from a copy he gave me back in the '80s): Santa Come Back (aka Shopping Shanty) By Brian Chadbourne sung to the tune of "Paddy Lay Back" 'Twas a cold and windy morning in December When all of my money it was spent. Where it went to, I really can't remember So back to the credit union I went. Chorus: Santa come back! Take up the slack! My Christmas list gets longer every year! So why's it have to start before Thanksgiving? It's enough to make me lose my Christmas cheer! This year there was a great demand for presents For my relatives and friends one and all. So I jumped into my car feeling quite pleasant But soon was looking for parking at the Mall. Chorus I was in the Toy Department when I saw 'em. Such an ugly bunch I'd never seen before. There were "Gobots," "Commandos" and "Transformers" And "Laser Tag" games piled up on the floor. Chorus 'Twas then I made my mind up that I'd leave there. Get back in my car and homeward I would go. The weather bureau told me it would be fair, And soon the roads were covered with ice and snow. Chorus For old Jack Frost he knew a thing or two, sir, And soon I found me off the road again. 'Cause I'd spent all of my money buying presents And forgot to put my snow treads on again. Chorus So there I was once more again at Sears, boys. The same old ruddy business over again. So reach into your pocket and get your plastic And listen to the register's refrain. Chorus |
