I went to the Music Hall in September and since then I've had part of this song running through my head. I've searched the web without luck for the lyrics. Here's the chorus. Does anyone know the rest? Sorry it's not folk but I know there are some Catters with Music Hall knowledge. Many thanks.

I didn't think it was strictly "Music Hall" (more folk, really!) The song is on "Vintage Cider" by The Wurzels, attributed to Siebert (1952). I think it may be somewhere on the forum, bu the search isn't working at them moment. More later.

I've been looking for the words of The Marrow Song for quite a while. It was originally from the British music hall stage. I seem to remember that it was originally sung by a man who dressed up as a woman complete with a parasol - "I haven't had it up yet this year !". The words posted earlier are not the original ones, but a modification of them.

In the original the gentleman takes his "marrow" into the sea for a swim and it shrinks (there's a chorus about how small it gets), but then the "lady" singing the song takes him into her room and "I slapped a mustard plaster on and it swelled before my eyes". The last chorus was usually sung -

I've never seen one as big as that,
I've never HAD one as big as that,
I've never seen one as big as that before.

I'll try and find some further details from my old mate John Foreman.

Here's a recent adaptation...

I should explain, for my American friends, that "rock" is a kind of hard candy, shaped like a peppermint stick (but not necessarily peppermint in flavor), commonly sold to tourists in seaside resorts. I couldn't find a photo of chalets, as I know them, but click here for something close.
