Subject: Lyr Req: The Marrow Song From: GUEST,Wordless Woman Date: 27 Nov 02 - 09:49 AM I went to the Music Hall in September and since then I've had part of this song running through my head. I've searched the web without luck for the lyrics. Here's the chorus. Does anyone know the rest? Sorry it's not folk but I know there are some Catters with Music Hall knowledge. Many thanks. Oh, What A Beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before! Oh, What A Beauty! It must be two foot long, or even more! It's such a lovely colour, and nice and round and fat, I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that! Oh, What A Beauty! I've never seen one as big as that before! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Marrow Song From: IanC Date: 27 Nov 02 - 10:29 AM I didn't think it was strictly "Music Hall" (more folk, really!) The song is on "Vintage Cider" by The Wurzels, attributed to Siebert (1952). I think it may be somewhere on the forum, bu the search isn't working at them moment. More later. :-) |
Subject: ADD: The Zucchini Song From: GUEST,MCP Date: 27 Nov 02 - 11:59 AM There's a version on Sing365 as The Zucchini Song. The Zucchini Song Now down the road there lives a man I'd like you all to know, He grew a big zucchini for the local flower show And when the story got around they came from far and wide, And when then saw what he had grown, everybody cried..... Ooooh! What a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that before, Oh Oh! What a beauty, it must be two foot long or even more. And it's such a lovely color, so big, and round, and fat, I've never seen a zucchini grow quite as big as that, Oh Oh! What a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that before. He was leaning on the garden gate the other day, And beckoned to a lady who lives just across the way, He took her down the garden path and showed it to her with pride, And when she saw the size of it, the little lady sighed.. Third verse, worse than the first! And then the flower show was held and everybody went, To see this huge zucchini, lying there inside the tent. Soon the judges came along to give the prizes out, And they only took one look at it and they began to shout, Now what did they shout???" OOOOOH! What a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that before, Oh Oh! What a beauty, it must be two foot long or even more. And it's such a lovely color, so big, and round, and fat, I've never seen a zucchini grow quite as big as that, Oh Oh! What a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that before There are also a couple of verses in a Round The Horn script (along with some of the Cucumber song). Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Marrow Song From: Dave Bryant Date: 28 Nov 02 - 05:44 AM I've been looking for the words of The Marrow Song for quite a while. It was originally from the British music hall stage. I seem to remember that it was originally sung by a man who dressed up as a woman complete with a parasol - "I haven't had it up yet this year !". The words posted earlier are not the original ones, but a modification of them. In the original the gentleman takes his "marrow" into the sea for a swim and it shrinks (there's a chorus about how small it gets), but then the "lady" singing the song takes him into her room and "I slapped a mustard plaster on and it swelled before my eyes". The last chorus was usually sung - I've never seen one as big as that, I've never HAD one as big as that, I've never seen one as big as that before. I'll try and find some further details from my old mate John Foreman. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DREAD ROCK (Judge Dread) From: Jim Dixon Date: 30 Nov 02 - 02:55 PM Here's a recent adaptation... I should explain, for my American friends, that "rock" is a kind of hard candy, shaped like a peppermint stick (but not necessarily peppermint in flavor), commonly sold to tourists in seaside resorts. I couldn't find a photo of chalets, as I know them, but click here for something close. Copied from http://www27.brinkster.com/skarmony/DreadRock.html DREAD ROCK (Judge Dread a.k.a. Alex Hughes) When I go down the seaside, I'm feeling rather rude. The girls in their bikinis are showing all their boobs. But when they see my stick of rock, they all shout out with glee, "Before you give it all away, please save a length for me! "Oh, ho, ho, oh, what a big one! I've never seen one as big as that before! Oh, ho, ho, oh, what a big one! It must be fourteen inches long or more!" I took a stroll along the beach. My rock was in my hand. I saw a girl who was buried up to her neck in sand. She said, "Some boys did this to me. Please help get me out," But before I could assist her, my rock shot in her mouth! And she cried, "Oh, what a big one! I've never seen one as big as that before! Oh, ho, ho, oh, what a big one! It must be fourteen inches long or more!" Now I'm always in the discos as soon as the sun goes down. I chat up all the nice girls with bodies nice and brown. I take 'em back to me chalet and they always get a shock, For when I turn the lights on, and they see the size of me rock! They all cry, "Oh, what a big one! I've never seen one as big as that before! Oh, ho, ho, oh, what a big one! It must be fourteen inches long or more!" Now me holidays are over. Me rock goes home with me. Although it's not as big as it was, it's big enough for me. If you want to know who my girlfriend is, take a look around the place. She's the one in the corner, with a smile upon her face! 'Cos she knows that it's a big one! She's never seen one as big as that before! Oh, my God! Oh, what a big one! It must be fourteen inches long or more! |
