Subject: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: GUEST,Tom Hamilton Date: 27 Nov 02 - 08:12 PM Hello there, I'm looking for the lyrics to a song called Cornbread peas and black Molasses. It was written by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. So if anyone could help in any way I would be most grateful. Thanks Tom |
Subject: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: toadfrog Date: 27 Nov 02 - 09:59 PM It's short, and a bit repetitive. CORNBREAD, MEAT AND MOLASSESI don't want no cornbread, peas, black molasses. I don't want no cornbread, peas, black molasses. I don't want no cornbread, peas, black molasses. At supper time, lord, lord lord at supper time. I got a letter, letter from my momma this morning [etc.] It said come home, lord, lord lord, son come home. I ain't got no, got no ready-made money [etc.] I can't come home, lord, lord lord, I can't come home. [Repeat first verse. I have that on an old Stinson disk, and I think actually you may maen Sonny Terry and Alec Steward. It isn't really a Brownie McGee type number. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: Stewie Date: 28 Nov 02 - 12:57 AM I have it on an old LP Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee 'In London' Astor GGS 988. The attribution on the label is to 'Terry-McGee'. It could be wrong attribution, of course, but they are both happily duetting on the recording. It has an extra stanza to that posted above: If I could make a June, July and August [x3] [August pron. 'Auger'] Then I'll go home, lord, lord, lord, then I'll go home --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: toadfrog Date: 29 Nov 02 - 11:08 PM Sorry Stewie, maybe I was being dogmatic. I also have it on an OLD LP. (So old, it proudly calls itself "MICRO-GROOVE RECORDING - 331/3 RPM!") It is called "CHAIN GANG Volume One," and has Woody Guthrie, Sonny Terry and Alek Stewart on it. On the Stinson label, which I suspect was no longer a viable brant by the time I got hold of the record in 1956. If you say Brownie McGee also recorded it, I'm sure you are right. But people usually think of McGee when they think of Sonny Terry, and so far as I know Alek or Alec Stewart is probably a forgotten man, so I thought I might remind. I've only heard McGee play relatively urban sounding blues guitar, and the sound on my disk is very down home. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: toadfrog Date: 10 Dec 02 - 08:38 PM Well. On my old disk, the Title is "Cornbread, Meat and Molasses." No "black" in the title. But they sing, "I don't want no-o Peas, Cornbread, black molasses." Very ad hoc song, that, and it seems to me some of the very best traditional songs defy logic and make no sense at all. Like the Carter Family's "Titanic." Or on the other side, some of those fine old Copper Family songs that string together three generations of glorious Mondegreens! It wouldn't be no fun at all if it had to make sense! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cornbread peas and black molasses From: Richie Date: 10 Dec 02 - 10:21 PM I was just wondering "where's the beef?" If there's no meat in the lyrics I guess that would make it a nonsense song. Richie |
