Subject: Lyr Add: THE REBEL JESUS (Jackson Browne) From: Sorcha Date: 28 Nov 02 - 09:45 AM This one? Original recording from the Chieftains album "The Bells Of Dublin" Jackson Browne All the streets are filled with laughter and light And the music of the season And the merchants' windows are all bright With the faces of the children And the families hurrying to their homes As the sky darkens and freezes They'll be gathering around the hearths and tales Giving thanks for all God's graces And the birth of the rebel Jesus Well they call him by the Prince of Peace And they call him by the Savior And they pray to him upon the seas And in every bold endeavor As they fill his churches with their pride and gold And their faith in him increases But they've turned the nature that I worshipped in From a temple to a robber's den In the words of the rebel Jesus We guard our world with locks and guns And we guard our fine possessions And once a year when Christmas comes We give to our relations And perhaps we give a little to the poor If the generosity should seize us But if any one of us should interfere In the business of why they are poor They get the same as the rebel Jesus But please forgive me if I seem To take the tone of judgement For I've no wish to come between This day and your enjoyment In this life of hardship and of earthly toil We have need for anything that frees us So I bid you pleasure And I bid you cheer From a heathen and a pagan On the side of the rebel Jesus. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rebel Jesus (from Jackson Browne) From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Aug 06 - 01:32 PM It's a brilliant song that makes a very meaningful point. Leon Rosselson should study it thoroughly. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rebel Jesus (from Jackson Browne) From: Genie Date: 27 Aug 06 - 02:19 PM You can buy the entire Bells Of Dublin Album -- all 21 songs - for $9.99 (US) at www.itunes.com . A real bargain. It features The Chieftains, Barenaked Ladies with guest performers such as Kate & Anna McGarrigle; Marianne Faithrul; Rickie Lee Jones & Suzie Katayama; Elvis Costello; Nolwenn Monjarret; Brendan Begley, Kathryn Tickell, Kevin Conneff, & The Voice Squad; Derek Bell, Kevin Conneff, Martin Fay, Matt Molloy, Nanci Griffith, Paddy Moloney & Seán Keane. And Jackson Browne's album "The Next Voice You Hear - The Voice Of Jackson Browne" has 15 songs for 9 cents LESS! :-D That one includes both The Rebel Jesus and Lives In The Balance. You can, of course hear clips of the songs at www.itunes.com as well as on Browne's site www.jacksonbrowne.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rebel Jesus From: Genie Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:48 PM Sorcha, I'm not sure the recording on The Bells Of Dublin is the original recording - although I think it's probably the best, because the bagpipes really do add a lot. Jackson Browne also has the song, sans the Chieftains, on a couple of his albums. You can hear a clip of it at iTunes and even download it separately if you like. But I recommend both Browne's albums and the Bells Of Dublin album (something like 21 songs for $10 at iTunes) as well worth the price. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE REBEL JESUS (Jackson Browne) From: Genie Date: 15 Jul 11 - 07:01 PM Here is an earlier recording of The Rebel Jesus, by Jackson Browne. The text with this video has a couple of lyrics errors. THE REBEL JESUS (Jackson Browne © 1997) All the streets are filled with laughter and light And the music of the season, And the merchants' windows are all bright With the faces of the children, And the families hurrying to their homes As the sky darkens and freezes Will be gathering around the hearths and tales Giving thanks for all God's graces And the birth of the rebel Jesus. Well, they call him by the Prince of Peace And they call him by the Savior, And they pray to him upon the seas And in every bold endeavor. As they fill his churches with their pride and gold And their faith in him increases, But they've turned the nature that I worshipped in From a temple to a robber's den, In the words of the rebel Jesus. We guard our world with locks and guns And we guard our fine possessions, And once a year when Christmas comes We give to our relations And perhaps we give a little to the poor If the generosity should seize us, But if any one of us should interfere In the business of why they are poor They get the same as the rebel Jesus. But please forgive me if I seem To take the tone of judgment, For I've no wish to come between This day and your enjoyment. In this life of hardship and of earthly toil We have need for anything that frees us, So I bid you pleasure and I bid you cheer From a heathen and a pagan On the side of the rebel Jesus. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rebel Jesus (Jackson Browne) From: Chris in Portland Date: 16 Jul 11 - 10:19 AM Thanks for the lyrics - a couple of changes from how it is done on the McGarrigle Xmas cd. I have no problem with heathens and pagans. Some of my best friends are of that persuasion and this is a great song. But I'm sure Jackson wouldn't mind when I change the next to the last line to: "And I revel on this wond'rous night" Chris |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rebel Jesus (Jackson Browne) From: Mrrzy Date: 11 Dec 16 - 02:08 PM I have this by the McGarrigle sisters with Martha Wainwright and Lily Lanken. One of my current faves of the offbeat ones. |
