Subject: Lyr Add: OLD SUMMER WINE (Jerry Rasmussen) From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 28 Nov 02 - 08:33 PM I was just in Mudchat, and mentioned a couple of lines from a song I wrote many years ago and Jeannie, Sorcha and Rapaire threatened consequences too fierce to mention if I didn't post the lyrics. Many years ago, I was home in southern Wisconsin and we had a big family picnic out at the park. My Mother and Father and three of my Mother's sisters were all lined up in lawn chairs under a big oak tree, watching their grandchildren playing, and it was a beautiful picture I never took. All but my Mother and one of her sisters are gone now. A few weeks later, I had a dream that I was in that park, and my family was all there. And most of the song came out of that dream... OLD SUMMER WINE All lined up in lawn chairs, under the trees Lost in their thoughts and their old memories They've outlived their friends and their enemies Chorus: They're the last of the line And they're taking their time But their minds are as clear as old summer wine Some worked the factories, some worked the fields Some spent their lives making automobiles Some stretched the money to make the next meal Chorus: Their children are grown now, with kids of their own They've all left the farms and moved to the town And they say it don't hurt, when they don't come around Chorus: I guess I did take a picture that day, after all.. This probably falls under the category of a "personal" song, as discussed in another thread. Sorry, I don't know how to post the melody... Jerry |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Old Summer Wine From: Jeanie Date: 29 Nov 02 - 06:40 AM Lovely, Jerry. Thank you ! Makes me think of my mum, now 83, last survivor of her family of 7 brothers and sisters brought up on a farm in Wales - a totally bygone age. Took her in the summer to meet an old friend she has known all her life: wonderful to see the two of them reliving those times, becoming like little girls again. - jeanie |
