We've run both music and movie lines before and I haven't seen one for awhile so..........what the hell.........

Seen any good or bad movies lately? More to the point though, have you heard a line that you really liked? Humorous, serious....don't matter.....Just a good line that caught your attention....Here's two from a couple of recent flicks:

From "Best In Show"
"She looks like a cocktail waitress on an oil rig."

From "Quiz Show"
"I love my wife but it's like living with a plague of locusts."

Back in the 50's (not quite recent...) Robert Ryan said to a kid who was bothering him, "Beat it, dust!" We used that phrase for years. I thought it came from Bad Day At Black Rock, but it doesn't. It could have been any Robert Ryan movie...

The Will Geer character in Jeremiah Johnson: "I packed me a squaw for ten year, Pilgrim. Cheyenne, she were and the meanest bitch that ever balled for beads. Then I lodge-poled her at Deadwood Creek and traded her for a Hawken gun. But don't get me wrong. I loves the womens... I surely do."

Always brings a chuckle.

From the mini-series "Joan of Arc" - Joan's final words as she's being barbequed - live!! - in front of the whole community (in fine European tradition) ... she casts her eyes skyward, an enraptured smile crosses her childish face and she whispers "THANK YOU..."

This helps me put the petty annoyances of my own life into proper perspective ....

From "State and Main" (and these may not be verbatim, but you get the idea):

Old codger #1: "It takes all kinds."
Old codger #2: "Is that what it takes? I've often wondered what it took."

Also:

Guy: "My life is so boring. I have to make my own fun."
Girl: "You always have to make your own fun. If somebody else does it for you it's not fun - it's entertainment.

Also from State And Main...

"We should get him something that he likes.. What does he like?"
"14 year old girls"
"Well, we can't do that... Let's get him half a 28 year old."

LOL

From 3000 Miles To Graceland
"Filters are for pussies, and guys my age, kid."

From Harley Davidson And The Marlborough Man
"It's better to be dead and cool, than alive and uncool."

From Reign Of Fire
"The only thing worse than dragons... Americans!"

From The Abyss
"I hate that bitch."
"Then you probably shouldn't have married her."

Also from The Abyss, often heard when I'm futzing with home repair
"... I mean, all I need is a god-damned crescent wrench!"

From A Muppet X-mas Carol
"Thank you for making me a part of this..."

The ENTIRE movie Snatch....

whooeee a can of worms fer sure!

"Well Woodrow, this is where we find if we were cut out to be cattlemen, I reckon!" Gus to Call from Lonesome Dove as a cattle stampede starts. A quote I have borrowed many a-time right before an impending disaster.

"Emmingrants?!, Emmigrants?!" The Mountain Men. (Charlton Heston, looking frightened and confused at the suggestion of settlers coming through the Rockies on their way to Oregon)

"She's so pretty and sweet, I could eat her brains like jam!" (a goblin from "Legend"? or ...?)

It's not a line but the whole "Blind Man" scene from Woman in Red fractures me just thinking about it.

"Put THAT in yer book" teamster to John Dunbar in Dances with Wolves

Yet another one from Jeremiah Johnson:

Del Gue: "Damn, that Hatchet Jack `uz a wild `un. He was livin' for two years in a cave with a mountain lion up on the Mussel Shell... she never did get used to him."

What a great flick that is, and not least of all for the outstanding soundtrack. Cool song fragments, mountain fiddling, etc. It'll be the first DVD I lash out for when I finally get a real player.

From "A Man for All Seasons"

First Paul Scofield's SirThomas More informs his aristocrat friend the Duke of Norfolk ( Nigel Davenport )to be careful with his words as Moore fears the equivalent of England's version "The Terror" occasioned by King Henry VIII's "loyalty oath" proclamation.
To this the rather proud and self-assured Duke of Norfolk retorts " Man you're ill. This isn't Spain , ya know, It's England !"

A line that haunts the Duke of Norfolk to the bone when he's been told personally ,by King Henry's hatchetman,Cromwell,
that the King himself wants Norfolk to become personally involved in what will become "the purge" of Moore. The dialogue ends in Cromwell's private chamber with Cromwell coldly saying to the proud Norfolk that he wouldn't trun the King down "if I were you".
Norfolk: " Are ye threatening me?"
Cromwell " My dear Norfolk; this isn't Spain. This is ENGLAND."
upon which Norfolk's face turns cold remembering these words he had just spoken to Moore and the line " Ask not for whpom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee" comes to mind.

Another usly delivered line for Norfolk was when he collects the chain of office from the deathbed slab of Cardinal Woolsey. As Orson Wells' Woolsey says his final parting words " If I had served God half so well as I had served my King, God would not have left me here to die in such a place".
Without missing a single beat Norfolk fires back " Thank God yer dynig here. The King would have ye die in the Tower."

Well, what about moments of silence for a change? Speaking of Gregory Peck, the whole last scene of Roman Holiday when neither he nor Audrey Hepburn say a word (oh there are words, but....), and he walks out at the end is one of the saddest scenes I can remember, noble too, in a way that has gone completely.

An absolute symphony of silence is much of "The Graduate", though everyone remembers the words. Without the awkward silences, starting with Benjamin and gradually infecting everyone, it would be nothing.

One of the great moments of silence that lasts just the perfect beat and no more is Claude Rains' tour de force in the last scene in Casablanca when he has to decide which horse to back. It is always a great moment, perfect timing -- audiences invariably applaud or laugh with relief, even if they have seen it a hundred times (like me).

yours, Peter T.

Okay, Declan,

An Ayrshireman walks into a bakery and looks at the wares there and asks:

"Is that a custard or a meringue?"

"No sir. You're right. It's a custard."

"Raiders of the lost ark," after Indy comes through a whole passel of dangers and is confronted by a sword-twirling maniac

"Aw, shit!"

and shoots him.

I understand that the scence wasn't in the script -- totally improv.

We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was getting tired of being stared at." -C.D. Bailes (Steve Martin in Roxanne)

In The Thirteenth Warrior Antonio Banderas plays an Arab, in the early middle ages - a well-educated and cultured chap - who gets sent off with a bunch of Vikings to fight a bunch of cannibal cultists so mean that they even scare the Norsemen.

At one point, there has been a major fight, and the bad guys have been driven off for the moment, and the good guys are wandering around, exhausted and unable to believe they survived.

One Norsman comes up to Banderas and offers him a jug.

Banderas: "I may not! 'Neither of the distillation of wheat nor of the grape....' "

The Viking laughs loudly.

Banderas looks confused.

The Viking: "HONEY! It's made from HONEY!"

Banderas looks at the jug, thinks, and takes a big slug.

A lot of them from The Princess Bride, especially:

"Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while."

and

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia', but only slightly less famous is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!'."

and the legendary:

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Peter Sellers in one of the Pink Panther movies - I believe it was "The Pink Panther strikes again" - his funniest in my opinion:
Inspector Clouseau, on seeing small yapping dog in hotel lobby
"Does your dog bite?" Hotel owner says "No"
Dog attacks his leg.
Inspector Clouseau- "I thought you said your dog did not bite"
Hotel owner- "That is not my dog!"

You'll have to imagine the French accent.
