After seeing the movie "Frida" I was haunted by the soundtrack of the film. I know Mexican culture has contributed a lot to (US)American culture. Can anyone lead me to sources of infromation to learn about the folk music of Mexico. Print, electronic, and recorded music media sources are all desired. Anyone here able to help?

Ol' Bill

Take a look at this website, El Mariachi songs: El Mariachi
Lots of good Mexican song lyrics on their list.
Also try Luciano's Piano Bar: Luciano

Also look at Amazon for a sound track of Frieda. I will have to see that film.

Check Elijah Wald's book NARCOCORRIDOS. It's a fascinating look at modern Mexican music out of the tradition.

Arhoolie Records has recorded a good bit of Mexican and Mexican-American music. They had a big box set on songs of the Mexican Revolution and another on "Corridos y Tragedias de la Frontera."

There is a companion CD to Narcocorridos that is nice in that it encompasses several styles: Bandas, Conjuntos, mariachis, etc.

From my bookmarks:

Cibermancia
A collection of Mexican folk songs, no tunes

LA REVOLUCIÓN MEXICANA A TRAVÉS DE LOS CORRIDOS POPULARES / Por Armando de Maria y Campos
Clickies there: Some corridos about Emilio Zapata and friends, some with tunes.

Sing and enjoy
