Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there might know where I could get the Irish Gaelic words to the first song on the CD "No Dowry" by Maighread Ni Dohomhnaill. The song is called "Amhran Pheadar Breathnach". Please excuse the lack of fadas.

Alternatively, is there any way I could write to her and ask for the words? Where would I write?

BTW, I'm not trying to suggest you shouldn't look for lyrics on-line. I got enthusiastic at the very sight of your request. This is an older CD (released in 1991), so when someone comes looking for it, I want them to have the joy of owning it, as it is a wonderful CD that is standing up very well over time, unlike many other contemporary CDs with a lot of Gaelic language content.

Maighread is also a wonderful person, and I love to see her getting support for her work so she can keep doing it!

Actually,I own the cd and I adore it. My copy was released by Shanachie in 1999 and it doesn't have any of the lyrics to the Gaelic songs, only to the English songs. Is there an older release that has them? This is one cd that I go back to again and again, so I would highly recommend it to others. My only disappointment was the fact that it didn't have the Gaelic lyrics.

I have met Maighread, but only briefly at Frank Harte's cd release party at the Cobblestone in May of 2001. I was so moved by her singing and her presence that night, but I didn't get to know her at all.

Claire, the CD I have is a Gael Linn CD, issued in 1991, with the lyrics! It is still available from the two outlets I mentioned above. I didn't realize there was a reissue through Shanachie.

If you like Mairead's singing, you may also enjoy Aoife Ni Fhearraigh, also from Donegal with a similar sounding/quality voice (though a bit more breathy-Brennan sister sounding, if you know what I mean). You might also be interested in getting a CD of Donegal singers called "Seoda: Sean-Nos as Tir Chonail" which has 5 songs by Cait Ni Dhomhnaill, one of my favorite Donegal singers. It is available mail ordered from Clo Iar-Chonnachta, and their email is:

A longer version is published in Peter Kennedy's "Folksongs of Britain and Ireland" under the title "Chuaigh Me `Na Rosann" ("I went to visit the Rosses").

If there is real interest, I would type it out to post here. (Don't know how to do fadas, though!)

Michaelr, there are a number of threads in the Forum which would show you how to do the fadas. I can't find a good one, but I'll show you a method which is fairly easy to remember.

á = á
é = é
í = í
ó = ó
ú = ú

There. That gives you the IRish vowels with their method of entry. For vowels with grave accents (ones angled the other way), substitute the word acute with the word grave

anyway for accent marks and other diacritical marks in Mudcat contributions it really is best to use the longer method which you will find at this symbol chart

I get tired of harping on about this, but we have had some problems with letters not appearing on all screens the way the writer originally posted them. It seems the symbol chart at http://www.bbsinc.com/symbol.html offers the best way to post at Mudcat. When you type you will see & # and numbers, but they will appear as á,é, &&234, í and so on. I can get the síne fada, acute accent simply by pressing ctrl and alt along with the vowel, but after typing out the lyrics in the shorter way I replace these vowels with the ampersand numerical codes before posting. If you are working with a word processing package that has the find and replace function, this isn't too difficult. Sometimes I have to do every vowel manually and then I do makes some errors.

Yes, I think so ... it might not always be at the url given.
I think Jeff is the person who has explained elsewhere at Mudcat why that symbol system works better here than do other ways of showing the letters.

michaelr, you might want to compare what Kennedy has with the lyrics and translation given at Mudcat and at Liam Harte's pages (link from Mudcat thread mentioned above) and also summarise the background information given by Kennedy
