Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 06 Dec 02 - 04:43 PM A PM is on its way to you, Bob...don't know when I'll get to type the lyrics, as it's going to be a busy weekend. (have to work...hip hip hooray :-) Have a good weekend, all of you! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Bob Bolton Date: 06 Dec 02 - 04:27 AM G'day Mad Maudlin, Most of the standard 'accents' for European languges are in all standard keyboards - and can be accessed with a couple of different simple codes. I use an "alt 0" code, where I hold down the 'alt' key and type 0 followed by three more figures between 128 and 256 - to get the "ASCII second set" characters. There may be a web site that tells you the codes ... or, if you PM me a e-mail address, I will send a small image (PDF or TIFF) of a file that prints out the second set codes for standard English language keyboard. It's a surprisingly fast way to set accents, once you get used to it. Reagrds, Bob Bolton (Never set Swedish ... but I have done Vietnamese - now that's another story!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 05 Dec 02 - 03:14 PM Hi Ralphie and Malcolm, Thanks for all the information and help! I wish my relatives would buy me CDs...guess it's going to be socks and underwear again this year. Sigh :) I think I could write down the lyrics to Knut Hauling and some other Swedish songs down if I look up almost every word in the dictionary - could leave blanks for the words I don't understand. I don't know about umlauts and a's with a squiggle on them...do I have to enter some HTML code, or does it work when I type the text in word and then copy-and-paste? As for Sven Svanevit, he always reminded me of Odin. Didn't he ask travellers riddles, too? Nathali ("Mad Maudlin" because "Tom O'Bedlam" is one of my favorite songs, and since a very dear friend of mine has started calling me that, I wear the name with pride :) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Dec 02 - 02:56 PM On that last, you might like to have a look at the Ballads section of the Norwegian Universities Documentation Project, which has 42 Norwegian variants (texts only, unfortunately) of Sven Svanevig (another of its names): Svein Svane |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Ralphie Date: 05 Dec 02 - 02:48 PM Hello Mad (!) Sadly the sleeve notes don't stretch to lyrics, And your Swedish is probably better than mine! All it says is that it is medieaval ballad about a shepherd (KH) who makes the king jealous by having 407 women in his bed at the same time...! Maybe Dave was right after all!! As for the other song, Sven Svanehvit. It seems to be about a meeting between (SS) and a highwayman who promises wealth and friendship for answering riddles (or "riddless" as it says in the booklet!) But a fine CD nonetheless... Apart from "Nordan", there's also "Agram",and "Frifot", On ECM records. Not to mention.2 other Frifot CD's on Caprice records (Frifot are Moller/Lenemark/Gudmundson). 2 CD's (at least!) by Lena and the Elise Einasdotter Ensemble also on Caprice. (I'm sure I saw a thread about Caprice records recently). Not to mention all the connecteed bands, Filarfolket, Groupa, Hedningarna, and various solo projects.....Should keep your relatives happy in the Xmas present buying department.!!! Hope all this helps...Call again if you want to. Cheers Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 05 Dec 02 - 01:41 PM Oh, and Ralphie, while we're at it - I would like to know the words and background to "Sven Svanevit" as well. But I think this is material for a new thread - what do you think? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 05 Dec 02 - 01:37 PM Hi Ralphie, It's on "Nordan", the only one I have so far, sadly. I found lots of the other songs online (Sven i Rosengard etc), but not that one...so if you could help, that would be great! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Ralphie Date: 05 Dec 02 - 07:22 AM Dear MM... Seriously though folks... Which Lena/Ale recording do you have...I might be able to help... Krammar Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 05 Dec 02 - 06:09 AM Tss tss tss...I am Shocked, Dave! (blush) :) Well, this guy from the song, Knut Hauling, does put the king to shame by telling him how many women he had...("the king was surprised and crossed himself: "I have never had as many as that foreign Hauling"), so there definitely is a "wedding tackle connection", but I don't really know about your suggestion...they didn't wear jeans in medieval Sweden, you know :o) (Sorry, just feeling very silly today) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Dave Bryant Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:50 AM Isn't Knut Hauling the process of distributing your wedding tackle around in your jeans to make yourself more comfortable ? |
Subject: Lyr Req: Swedish Folk Ballad 'Knut Hauling' From: Mad Maudlin Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:35 AM Hi all, I have a recording of "Knut Hauling" by Lena Willemark and Ale Möller; I can understand most of the text, but am not sure of the spelling (I understand Swedish better than I can spell it), and there are some words and phrases I still don't understand. Would post the bits I understand here so you can fill in the rest, but my Swedish orthography cannot be trusted...so I'd rather not butcher that beautiful language :) I tried a google search for Knut Hauling, but found nothing that helped. Thanks! |
