Anyway , it's finally here in Northern Virginia and it's a thing of beauty to behold as we Virgians have been in a snow drought
for quite a long spell. This accounts for the complete driving chaos that always follows , but Mother Nature gonna do what Mother Nature gonna and motorists better just get a handle on it.

I can not contain my excitement as there is nothing more pyschologically peacful than a blanket of fresh snow first thing in the morning.
" I love the scent of fresh snowfall in the morning.
Smells like ........"Peace". ;-)

Now if only it would blizzard in the Middle East.

Nothing a Polar Shift couldn't manage. ;-)

There follows, copy-and-paste of e-mail sent to my children yesterday:

Made it up to Killington today to try the new skis (last year's K2 "Piste Off" in 180 cm). The new skis work better than my old thigh muscles, but what can you do? I feel like I was kidnapped by miscreants who kept me in a freezer and only took me out to beat on the fronts of my thighs with clubs.

I don't know how Killington manages to predict when it will be unseasonably cold so that they can plan their cheap-skiing-for-Vermonters days, but they manage. There is more snow than I've ever seen on a December 4, however...well, more than any since the winter of '89-'90, when it rained all January.

If I have any more fun, I'm gonna die right here in front of everybody.

Three to six inches in the Cincinnati area. Unlike those of use who have spent the last 28 years in the snow belts of the Great Lakes, they don't know how to cope with it and place pretty much panics (unlike Washington, DC, which simply closes up shop with a half an inch).

Awfully pretty, though. Hides the litter, too.

Another Yankee, hrmmmmmmmmfffffff! ;-)

Cincinnati, like most of Kentucky, is often on the line between freezing and rain. We don't just have snow, we have ICE! It's not like driving on powder. And then the slush freezes every night to make several inches of ice. Ice is very hard for the scrapers to remove, so the roads often have a washboard effect, not to mention hidden icy spots.

But we do have our share of crazy drivers who drive entirely too fast. On days like this, the police tell people in fender benders to just exchange information and go to the nearest police station to fill out an accident report.

Here in small towns, the city schools are often open while the county schools can close for a week. The snow on city streets will melt from traffic while the county roads will stay icy until the weather turns warmer.

You don't own a shovel, do you ? You don't have to be at work promptly, even when there's a foot down, the plow just put three feet in the end of your drive, she's blowinn drifts that challenge a 4X4, and visibility is less than ten feet in the whiteouts, do you ?

You don't have KeeKee Birds down there, do you? The flock in my back yard would be singing their song this morning, "Kee Kee KEEE-RIIST IT"S KEE KEE COLD !!!!", if their little beaks weren't frozen shut.

My brother has a dream: to win the lottery, put his snow blower on a trailer and head south until someone asks, "What's that thing ?"

5 inches here and still coming. Karen stayed at work doing some overtime until the morning rush is over and the roads get a bit clearer after rush hour. It's a 45 mile drive for her back here from Columbus and these are the times that worry me most.......

My daughter in Alexandria called this morning as I was heading out (no snow this morning, so I was leaving at my "normal" time as opposed to "winter" time...) She was giggling at all the folks who were in a panic over the weather... 2 inches of snow and slush and yick and her boss called her to tell her it was "too dangerous" to come in to work (in D.C.). He couldn't figure out why the young woman from Michigan thought that was so funny. So she's staying home watching the telly... after she wakes up from her morning nap.

I just got back inside from scraping the steps. There's at least an inch and a half of solid ice under several inches of powder. If the weather alternates around freezing during the next few days, we will have solid ice in the gravel making it impossible to walk across the driveway.

Gnu, I have a friend from Florida who shakes his head at all the crazy people who live above the Mason-Dixon Line, says that those poor folks just don't know any better!

LOL! THem guys in DC never did learn to drive too well.

WE haven't gotten any snow yet, and I am worried we have been left off the list. So far, the temps are a tad high -- 65-70F -- to support it, although we do get an occasional chillblain from rain or fog, where the temperature goes all the way down to 50. Sigh. When that happens I call in sick and sit around listening to those incredible songs found on the MUDCAT CDs.

Good mornin', Tal. I'm sittin' here looking out a about 5 to 6 inches of *peaceful* snow myself and workin' on my second cup of Tarazu coffee from the Bean and a nice fire in wood stove. And guess, what? You won't see me in Leesburg today 'cause Iz stayin' put. Gonna shovel a little snow (very little) and beat on my guitar and maybe play a little indoor game of *tag* with the P-Vine... Nothin like a little *strip tag* on a snowy day!

We have a few inches in central New Jersey, and it's still coming down. My days off are Wed. and Thur., so I'm stuck in the house today. I have no excuse now not to clean this place. Or watch the videos I rented last night. Lilo and Stitch was good, today I'll be watching Ice Age and The Importance of Being Ernest while I fold my laundry and cook a pot of cabbage soup - my own recipe which happens to be excellent. I'd clean out the refrigerator, but I left my gun at work and I'm not going in there unarmed.

I find that those people who hate the cold are those whom do not own a coat or Longjohns!

The key to enjoying winter is to dress up for it from head to toe.

Spaw has a good point, but snow tires and safe driving goes a long way!

I am amazed by those people who spend the whole season bitchin about the weather. But I suspect that they'd be bitchin about something else anyway. Some people need to complain I guess! Otherwise Florida would be more populated!

I like snow - but then we don't get much very often in Liverpool - moderating effect of the sea, y'know. It's difficult when it stops you doing what you want to do - but the snow was here before we were and it'll still be here when we've long gone. Learn to live with the world.

Here in the Philadelphia PA area they are calling for 6-8 inches of snow today, though one TV station's weatherpersons are adding an inch to that forecast. They're also calling for icy conditions in southern New Jersey and Delaware.

I live north of Philly, and there was nothing but powder on the car this morning, but it was piling on as quickly as I brushed it off. The roads are slick and slippery because the local snow-removal system is not too efficient (snow removal varies from township to township around here). Yeah, it is pretty, but who can stop to look when one is busy trying to avoid an accident?

Anyway, temperatures are supposed to warm a bit Friday and Saturday... unfortunately not in time for tonight's open circle in Philly, and I'm not a brave enough soul to drive that far in these conditions, so I'll stay home tonight and sing to myself.

well, I am in the DC area, and I have 5" as I type.....but....I went shopping and stocked the larder on Tuesday!...*happy grin*...(and I come from Kansas, and I CAN drive in snow..(though, to be fair to DC folks, what we get here is often a coating of a couple inches at 31º, making it nasty driving for anyone)...today, however, it was cold and we have just had powder, so this is not bad at all.

We have bird feeders, and just put out some suet for the woodpeckers, sunflower seeds for chickadees and titmice, and LOTS of thistle for the hoards of Goldfinches that show up when it snows...So...sitting in front of the live 80" TV set..(picture window) and watching the show.....it oughta be a quiet day

My daughter is in Lynchburg, VA, and she called laughing that 3 inches of snow closed the town and the school. She was relieved because she had a paper due today and now she has a reprieve.

Here in Maine we have a dusting, 2 or 3 inches, of old snow changed to ice. An unknown correspondent in Anchorage, Alaska, says they had 55 degrees and no snow yet this year. Hmmm, what's going on?

Diary of a Snow Shoveler

December 8: 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the
season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat
down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses
Print. So romantic, we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a
fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole
World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had.
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again!
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This
afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks
and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel
again. What a perfect life.

December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry;
we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas
would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much
snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow
again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice
man I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14: Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature
dropped to -20. The cold makes everything
sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by
shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the
life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried
everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite
this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this
way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4
Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and
2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood
stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's
silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice
in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt a bunch.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think, was very cruel.

December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go
anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to
pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at
the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've
bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. I hate it when
she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in
my own living room.

December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the
darn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day.
The blasted snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid
to shovel, but they said they're too busy
playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware
store around to see about buying a snow blower
and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think
they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city
will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13
more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it's
so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes
to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I
had to empty my bladder. By the time I got undressed, did my
thing and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of
the winter; but he says he's too busy. I know the guy
is lying.

December 23: Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The
wife wanted me to decorate the front of the
house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me
to do that a month ago? She says she did but I
think she's lying.

December 24: 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the
shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I
ever catch the one who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him
through the snow. I know he hides around the corner
and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the
street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all
over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing
Christmas carols with her and open our presents,
but I was busy watching for the blasted snowplow.

December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the white slop
tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling
makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver
came by asking for a donation and I hit him over
the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I
think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's A
Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to hurt her.

December 26: Still snowed in. Why did I ever move here? It was all
HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27: Temperature dropped to -50 and the pipes froze, but
at least it is too cold to snow!!!!!!!!

December 28: Warmed up to above -30, still can't snow any more
though. Still snowed in and the wife is driving
me crazy!!!

December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof
or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever
heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for
a million dollars for the bump on his head.
The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.

December 31: Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills
they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

Good warning there Alice. Living in Minnesota (where we have barely a dusting of snow so far this year), we know better than to feel smug, because of the boomerang effect. We keep watching the weather in Buffalo, NY--that is who we are normally in competition with on the snow/cold front lines here.

This year, we finally bought a (used) snowblower. We're hoping it will innoculate us from a heavy snow year, such as the one Alice describes above. Thing is, that story is NO JOKE to some of us, despite our wicked smiles as we read it!

The thing I've decided is likely best (now that the last child is graduating high school this year) is to forget house living, and move to a condo/apt, where snow removal is someone else's headache, so we can continue to enjoy winter as we did in our younger years, when we did the insane things like commute 60+ miles a day in all sorts of weather. Now, I just refuse to go anywhere when we get 6-8 inches or more in one snowfall. Some years, that just means you miss a lot of work, which I for one have always considered A Good Thing. The bills are a lot like snow--some years, they just keep coming, no matter what you do. I've also learned over the years that if it's a choice between proving one's self worthy according to the Protestant Work Ethic Standard, or living with a bad credit rating, the latter is a often a much better lifestyle choice.

4 1/2 inches in the Richmond area. Took me an hour and 15 minutes to drive home from work last night-25 miles. I took the main highways figuring they'd at least be clear. Wrong! Luckily it was 1 am and I had the road to myself pretty much.

Well, we're up to about 10 inches now and it's still snowing here on this Wes Ginny mountain. I shoveled my M880 Army truck out and went to the store fir a six pack of beer and now having a hot cup of tea and, well, lovin' life.

Alaska has gone nuts. No snow. The last couple of days the fog has been freezing though, so it finally gives the illusion of winter. Cars have to be scraped every morning, Juneau tempertures are in the upper 20s and the air is still. Nice- but it's not winter. At this rate the local ski area won't open at all this season. Where's our snow.

Average snowfall in November here is 12+ inches (although I remember one year when November brought 71"); this year we have not even seen any snow flying in the air.

I tell the locals: Buy land. Buy land and plant banana trees.

Here in southern NJ, just a few miles south and across the river from SharonA, we already have over 8 inches of snow - mostly fluffy with just a hint of iciness - and it looks as though it could go on forever. No worries though. I'm telecommuting today (and maybe tomorrow!), the larder is full, and everything looks lovely.

It's beautiful here. I'm at my niece's home overlooking the river from the top of the Palisades. There is a park between me and the river. Took a little longer than usual coming in from Brooklyn to the office in NJ, but no problems. It actually happened, drivers were polite to each other. The chemist got out a sample to a tester today.
The boss said to close the office at 2.

When we leave here, it's off to a party and then the theater. There are times that public transportation makes sense. This is one of them.

Round abouts up to 10 inches are now predicted on the Cape and Islands, 6 to 8 inches in southeastern Massachusetts. Looks like Boston will dodge the bullet, with only 2 to 4 inches.

Oh, about 9 inches or so in Northern New Jersey still falling. I'm watching out the window as my two older boys shovel the drive and the walk. I knew there must be some reason to keep adolescent boys around...BG.. Since the Mister was suppose to flying out of Alburquere tonite, I'm expecting that the connection in St Louis will end up an over night.. Oh well... I'm sure we'll find some for him to clean up tommorrow..

Ahhh , now that's one more bit-o'-winterizing that I don't have ; that wood-bruning aroma with that cozy heat to dry by after getting all dusted-up shoveling and sweeping away the powder.
However I enjoyed the menatl picture of the Rev.Bob being givien the gift of a day off to spend with the "heart" and the hearth of his home. I'm savoring the scent and taste of "The Coffee Bean's" Tarazu brew in my mind's eye theatre right now.

Man, that was only two or three weeks ago. Seems like a life time. I've had the small wood stove in the den going all day and the heat hasn't come on once all day, Tal.

Booo! The snow has stopped! Oh well, 10 inches ain't bad. Beats the 31 inches we got in '96 (or was it '97). Man, that one was no fun. The [power went out and when ya' called the power company they're response was: "The entire mountain is dead". Three days later we got the 'lectrical back. Burned lots of wood! Cooked on the woodstoves and took the food out of the refrig., put it in boxes and put them boxes on the back deck.

Yeah, 10 iches? Real nice!

I couldn't believe how quiet it was this morning at 7:00 a.m. -- no cars going by, the heat pump had taken a break for a minute or two, my son was still asleep, and it was just me and the snow. I think we got about 6" all told, but it looked like more on top of the trash can on the patio.

I love snow too, but it was a drag to have to go to work. I live about 10 minutes from Bill D, so had about the same amount of snow. Schools were closed, officials of all kinds were telling people to stay home and off the roads (which were TERRIBLE when I came in at noon), but by damn the libraries were open! Talk about mixed messages... Usually we get about 1200 people through here in a day; today the total is about 250 for the 11 hours. Right now we have one customer here. Anyhow, I suppose I shouldn't gripe, as I do have a job and there are people who don't, etc., etc., but I sure coulda used a snow day. Oh well, maybe next time.

Snow can indeed be beautiful … especially in pictures. I always said I didn't care how deep the snow got as long as the temperature didn't dip below 22° Celsius or so.

Yup Bill, I remember that Feb. of 1977. Walked over to my cousin's apt. Looked out the window to find his car the parking lot was full but we could't see any cars. Boston shut the streets down to any driving except for emergency personel, people were cross country sking to get from one place to another. My roommate & I went to visit a nearby friend, had to dig his apt entrance way door not to get in but to let them all out. Snow drift hit the 2nd story. Snowed, I believe 28" one weekend then the following weekend dumped another 36". City became so scary with all the fellowship, friendship, strangers helping strangers. It must've been snowing acid & that wasn't even close to a bad year. I hate snow, worked outdoors in it for 30 yrs. Almost as bad as going to the beach to get a tan. Barry

The official meterological stance is that this phenomenom in Alaska is not an el Nino (squiggle) effect, rather we're getting Hawaii's weather chilled by the northern latitudes, due to high pressure holding off our normal weather.

Gee, and here we are in Arizona suffering from lack of snow, but happy as owls in 70 degree temperatures. Have fun, make snow people (can't call 'em snow men anymore)but let's wait a few weeks and see if you are still as enthusiastic about the snow as you are today. :>)

Well ,unless the temperature goes up and it all turns to one giant slush bowl, it'll all just gradually recede during the days of direct & unobstructed sunshine and that is entirely handlable.
The snow will be gone from where it ain't wanted ( roads & main walkpaths ) and the rest of the acrege will be left alone where feets don't tread and remain white island oasis's.

An accomodation with Nature is always adaptive.
Sort of like the heat and wildfire season of Arizona that my dear friends in Phoenix have exposed me to. You know, like the way everyone walks around like rom the film set of "Dune" ;having to actually carry water bottles with them when one ventures out for more than , oh ,half an hour or more. ;-)
Gotta love Phoenix's infamous "brown cloud" which obscures the true beauty of the moutain surrounded city at dusk.
Loved Phoenix and the Grand Canyon , but one day that municipal water supply ain't gonna cut it anymore.

Ebbie, down here in Minnesota, we are experiencing the effect of Alaska not yet having it's normal weather, and I like it just fine, thank you very much! Arctic air dipped down on us this week for the first time all season, and they are now predicting highs in the mid-30s all next week. We had our third mildest winter on record last year (we've actually been having unusually mild winters alternating with unusually heavy snow winters for the better part of the last 15 years. We used to joke about wanting global warming here, but I'm increasingly coming to believe it's already upon us, and will only continue to worsen. Our summers have been really hot too, and we've had a few too many "100 year" floods in the area. Normally our worst flooding would come in the spring, and we haven't had much of that at all in the last decade. But we have had flooding from excessive rains in the summer. Of course, the flooding becomes more noticeable because of all the dumbass places people keep building (such as along scenic rivers, creeks, lakes, etc) so after awhile you start to say to yourself, do I want my tax dollars to go to bail out people living in half million dollar homes on the banks of a river that floods regularly?

about 10" here in Gettysburg...took me an hour and 1/4 to get to work yesterday=27 miles. I have learned to dislike snow; perhaps spoiled by 13 yrs in TX. I did see an ice storm once in Wichita Falls many yrs ago...and as I recall the Christmas of 1982 in Houston caused power outages and all sorts of freeze ups. We had no heat and the neighbors had no water, so we slept at their house and tinkled at ours! We even took our christmas tree to theirs.

9" in Philadelphia, 8" to the north of the city where I am. The TV evening news broadcast said that on this date last year, it was sunny with a high of 71° in Philly... but we didn't have El Niño back in town back then. Should be an interesting winter (as in "may you live in interesting times"!). Wonder if we'll have another blizzard on the scale of the one in 1996?

Interesting to hear of all the snow. I'm glad I live in Maine, north of the snow belt. Generally, in recent years, the snow clobbers Massachusetts and points south and leaves us with a dusting.

Such is life, and el Nino.

I think the funniest thing about people here in the DC area is with any threat of snow they run off to the store and buy a months worth of food. Dan'it I just need a gallon of milk and fresh bread and I blow it off because of the crowds.

We had 6 inches at my house, my wife left for NW DC at 6:15 and got to work at 7:30, hell thats a normal bad day. I tried to talk her into coming back to bed, struck out. My work was closed so after my morning phone call to get the word, fresh cup of cold water, turn off the alarm, TV and headboard lamp and Nap Time!

Oh yeah! My 4x4 pickup sat in the driveway unused all day and my wife drove the Focus with no problems. So many of the idiot drivers stayed home.

I saw a major idiot this morning on the way to work. He decided to pull off the main road to the left into the median. He went all the way to the center gully, much farther and deeper than he had planned. He's gonna need a tow truck to get his sorry ass out of there. Dumb Ass!

Hell ,Hrothgar , threads don't die "that" easy. Some are only "sleepers" and 2 hours of no posts ain't no timme at all.

On that note there's reprots that another snowfall is brewing for December. This is newsworthy because us Viriginians *never* get to see serious snow on the December-side of Christmas season.

Here's hoping for what ever kind of white Chrsitams ol' Momma Nature can manage tp sprinkle our way.

This is all very promising. We often get a repeat of the American weather about 10 days late. I hope it's the snow not the heat!
