Come cheer up my lads, it's to glory we steer
To add something more to this wonderful year
To honor we call you, as free men, not slaves
For who are so free as the sons of the waves

Heart of oak are our ships
Heart of oak are our men
We always are ready
Steady, boys, steady
We'll fight and we'll conquer, again and again

Hearts of Oak (originally a shanty crew, but more general in the last couple of decades) was formed in the 1980s, under the leadership of John Parker of Barnstaple. The group ceased operating last November (2006) although individual members are still active around the North Devon scene. Rupert Kirby was the fiddler (and multi-instrumentalist) in the later stages on the group.

This thread is not related to Hearts of Oak words, or parody for that matter!

My ex-husband John Handley wrote a song for the group in the 1980s. It was about the Louisa lifeboat and a famous and heroic rescue in 1899.
John is now very ill and our son is putting together a website of his songs. If anyone out there could send me the lyrics of The Louisa Lifeboat I'd be most grateful.
