Subject: Finding simple tunes on the net - help please
From: Dave Thomas, Aberdeen

Got a request to find some simple single-line tunes for a friend learning the recorder - folkish. Instead of sending yards of paper copies of my tunes, can I point them to somewhere on the net which has such things - possibly with ability to hear the downloaded jingle version of the tune as with the song tunes?

Any ideas much appreciated.

Hi,

Try a search for Richard Robinson's tune book. There's heaps of stuff there, some easy, some hard.

Dave, your friend can have all the folk music tunes one could possibly want through the links on the ABC Home Page. Or, we have a fantabulous collection of tunes in MIDI format right here. Just use our Digital Tradition search function, and you'll find all sorts of treasures. Instructions for downloading the MIDI files here depend somewhat on how your browser is set up - you may be able to right-click on the "Click to play" link and download the tune instead of playing it.
Then use a program like Noteworthy Composer to display, play, and print the music. For ABC tunes, I prefer ABCMUS, and others like ABC2WIN - both are available through links on the ABC Home Page. These programs work fairly well without registration, but they're so good you'll probably want to pay the fee and get all the features.

Thanks a lot, both Alison & Joe. Just fine.

Cheers, Dave.
