GUEST,jaze, posted this in another thread where it was likely not be buried, so I am starting a thread to help find the song.

Dec 02 - 12:30 PM

Late last night while driving home from work I heard a folky christmas ballad on the local radio(rare!). It was about a little girl who rescues a wounded bird and puts it in a beat up cage. On Christmas eve it's all she has to offer at the manger. The Christ child accepts the gift and turns it into a mockingbird.

Anyone know this song or the singer? She had a fine voice.

I found this via an internet search:

1993 Cindy Cash, TAPE: Little Mockinbird.

"Untitled
... COL 53230: It Ain't Me Babe (live) 1993 Cindy Cash, TAPE: Little Mockinbird. ... sessions for the albums The Christmas Spirit; Keep On the Sunny Side; I Walk the ... de.geocities.com/rolf03de/jcdisc3...."

There are several references to Johnny and Cindy Cash doing a song called "Little Mockingbird" as a duet, and that one link ties it to Chritmas, but I could not find lyrics or an MP3.

DK if this is the song you are looking for, Vinnie.

According to this page, "Little Mockingbird" (w/ Cindy Cash) appears on the Johnny Cash bootleg album "Heroes & Friends" Volume 4. Again, I can't find any lyrics, so I can't say whether it's the song Vintage Martin is looking for.

Great handle, by the way, VM.

Glad you like the handle, JD.

Actually, I'm not the one who originated the search for this song. It was jaze.

And, yeah, I DK if the Cindy Cash/Johnny Cash song is the one in question or not.

The song VM is looking for, I'm pretty sure, is "The Gift," written and sung by Stephanie Davis, and the bird is a nightingale.

I think the song's posted in a thread here.

The Gift
by:Aselin Debison

A poor orphan girl named Maria
was walking the market one day
she stopped for to rest by the road side
where a bird with a broken wing laid
a few moments passed till she saw it
for it's feathers were covered with sand
and soon clean and rapped it was traveling
in the warmth of Maria's small hand
she happily gave her last paso
of a cage made of freshes and twine
she fed it loose corn from the market
watched it grow stronger with time
now the gift giving service was coming
and the chruch arm with tinsel and light
an' all of the town folk brought presents
to lay by the manger that night
there were diamonds, incents and perfumes
and packages fit for a king
but for one raged bird in his small cage
Maria had nothing to bring
she waited till just before midnight
so no one would see her go in
and crying she knelt be the manger
for her gift was unworthy of him
then a voice spoke to her through the darkness
Maria what brings you to me
if the bird in the cage is your offering
open the door let me see
so she trembled she did as he asked her
an' out of the cage the bird flew
soaring up into the rafters
on a wing that would feel good just new
an' just as the midnight bells rang out
and the little bird started to sing
a song that no words could recapture
for its beauty was fit for a king
now Maria felt blessed just to listen
to the cascade a note sweet and long
as her offering was lifted to heaven
by the very first night in Gales song

... only it's "nightingale's" song, not "night in Gales" -- wherever that is. ; D

Also, I'm pretty sure Stephanie Davis wrote the song.

And a couple more lyric corrections:

THE GIFT
Recorded by: Aselin Debison

A poor orphan girl named Maria
Was walking TO market one day,
WHEN she stopped for A rest by the roadside
Where a bird with a broken wing LAY.

A few moments passed till she saw it
For ITS feathers were covered with sand,
And soon, clean and WRAPPED, it was traveling
In the warmth of Maria's small hand.

She happily PAID her last PESO
FOR a cage made of RUSHES and twine.
She fed it loose corn from the market
AND SHE watched it grow stronger with time.

Now the gift-giving service was coming
And the church SHONE with tinsel and light
AND all of the town folk brought presents
To lay by the manger that night.

There were diamonds AND INCENSE and perfumes
And packages fit for a king.
But for one ragged bird in A small cage,
Maria had nothing to bring.

SO she waited till just before midnight
So no one would see her go in,
And, crying, she knelt by the manger,
For her gift was unworthy of Him.

Then a voice spoke to her through the darkness:
"Maria, what brings you to me?
If the bird in the cage is your offering,
Open the door, let me see."

So, TREMBLING, she did as he asked her,
AND out of the cage the bird flew,
Soaring up into the rafters
On a wing that HAD HEALED good AS new.

JUST THEN the midnight bells rang out
And the little bird started to sing
A song that no words could recapture
For its beauty was fit for a king.

Now Maria felt blessed just to listen
To the CASCADE OF NOTES sweet and long
As her offering was lifted to heaven
By the very first NIGHTINGALE'S song,

Sorry, this line:
WHEN she stopped for Arest by the road side ...

should read:
WHEN she stopped for A rest by the road side ...

(the words in all caps are the corrected lyrics from the previous post.

As stated above, the song is question is "The Gift," written by Stephanie Davis. You can find lyrics in the other thread, or at the Stephanie Davis Website (click).
I'm going to close this thread to avoid further confusion.
