Subject: The Carnival is Over - info required

The Seekers had a hit with The Carnival is Over way back in the 60's I believe. I've seen this song attrubuted to Tom Springfield, but in the recesses of my memory the tune was that of a Russian folk song called something like Styenka Razeen- that's sort of phonetic as I don't have the Cyrillic alphabet on my keyboard. Does anyone have any info on this, especially if the original was translated into English or whether there was ever an english version other than The Carnival is Over?

Do an internet search for Stenka Razin as a transliteration of the name and you'll find plenty of information about the man and the Russian ballad (which I've been known to sing myself in younger days). (Lyrics certainly available in Russian). The tune for The Carnival is Over is essentially identical to the original. (Literal) Translations of the Russian are available but I don't know if there are any in verse for singing.

I don't believe that the "Carnival Is Over" was a translation of "Stenka Razin" though it does share the same beautiful(IMO) melody. My memory seems to tell me that in SR, a beautiful woman ends up getting drowned, cast out to sea by SR... as his crew on the ship did not approve... It has to be in the dt here.

A couple of years ago our choir leader tried to introduce Stenka Razin to us but eventually gave up. The Carnival is Over was so strongly ingrained that many couldn't break away from it. Stenka Razin is in 3/4 and Carnival in 4/4.
