Subject: Lyr Req: Just to cheer him up and help him....
From: Dave Bryant
Date: 09 Dec 02 - 07:23 AM

Does anyone have the words of the song "Just to cheer him up and help him on his way".

I can remember a verse about a lover trying to hang himself:

... I said look where you've got that rope,
He looked and said "Oh heck".
So I took the rope from round his waist and put it round his neck.
Just to cheer him up and help him on his way.

And another verse about someone drowning:

He said "Drop me a line, or I will drown I fear".
So with my fountain pen I wrote "A prosperous New Year".
Just to cheer him up and help him on his way.

I have a feeling that it was Bert who used to sing it, I'll try e-mailing Mr Chopping's current lady friend - just in case.

This is a music hall song published by Feldman in 1912 (see M Kilgarriff 'Sing Us One of the Old Songs'). It was sung by Jack Pleasants.

Thanks for refreshing this thread - I'm still looking for the words.

If you have them and could post them, I'm sure many other 'catters would like to have them.

Breezy - the main trouble with asking Pete Chopping for words is that first of all you have to bribe him with a few pints, which tends to cloud his memory, but I'll see him at Walton-on-the-Naze festival and try then.

Sorry, Dave. I don't have the words readily to hand (or in my head) but Pleasants recorded the song more than once and I'd be surprisedif someone hadn't reissued it on CD. Tony Barker of Music Hall Magazine is sure to know (mysite.freeserve.com/music hall). And I agree, the title doesn't need the 'Just'.

Hello,

I thought I'd resurrect Dave*'s thread as I'm certainly still looking for the song.

It was one that Brixton Bert used to sing and everytime I asked him if I could have the words he'd say, "Next time, Pete!"

Can any one out there help nail this one down?

*of much missed memory

Thanks,

Peter

Reminds me of an Aussie Song

"That's what friends are for"

I think the song is working a familiar theme....

...Man goes out feeling on top of the world and all his "mates" tell him how bad/ill he looks...

Another line I remember is "...the Dead March then he whistled and fell down three flights of stairs, just to cheer him up and help him on his way!"

Great song...

Best wishes,

Peter

To be a trifle more helpful (since Mudcat search doesn't always pull up all it should):
