Well, with a couple of current threads having to do with the term "redneck" in one way or another, I just thought I'd stir the grits pot up a little by posting a little ditty I wrote about that same subject. Well.... Sorta, anyway.

Since none of you've ever heard this thing before, I included the chords in the key of C. In the unlikely event that someone should actually choose to sing it, you can probably come up with a reasonable facsimile of the melody by just following the chords. If not, PM me and we'll arrange a phone meeting and I'll sing the sumbitch for ya. Sorry, I don't do that midi thing yet.

BUBBA JOINS THE ASHRAM by Bruce W. LaWall

(C) Down in southern Alabama near the (D7) city of Mobile
(G) Lived a good ole country boy by the name of Bubba (C) Steele
(C) Now he never raised a family and he (D7) never took a wife
(G) Was just a dyed-in-the-wool redneck and he'd been one all his (C) life.
(C) Well, he'd go (F) fishin' every mornin' in his (C) custom Ranger boat
(C) Drink two six-packs in the evening and watch his beer-belly (G) bloat
(C) He had a (F) thing about Hank Junior and (C) ole coon-dog named Jack
(C) And a four-wheel-drive Ford pickup truck with a (G) rebel flag on (C) back.

Now, Bubba lived upon a farm, was nearly forty acres big
Where he raised a dozen cattle, coupla horses and a pig
And one day while workin' in his field he happened to espy
These funny lookin' mushrooms growin' out of a cowpie.
So he picked a coupla dozen just to see how they might taste
Made a pot of mushroom gravy 'n poured it on a t-bone steak
And he ate every last mouthful, not one drop did go to waste
And he spent the next twelve hours off somewhere in outer space.

Now, the things that Bubba saw that night, he'd never seen before
Like angels dancin' on the ceilin', mermaids swimmin' in the floor
And he didn't know what happened, but he knew one thing for shore
It beat hell out of Budweiser, wouldn't drink it any more.
Yes, you might say that Bubba Steele became enlightened on that night
And he vowed to change his redneck ways and start out livin' right
So he threw a knapsack in his truck, said 'Bye' to his abode
Left the coon-dog with the neighbors and just headed down the road.

Well, it was somewhere near Atlanta that he spotted these two guys
Hitchhikin' on the Interstate and much to his surprise
They wore yellow robes and sandals and their heads were both shaved bare
Bubba stopped the truck to see if he could help 'em get somewhere.
They said they were headin' for their home, an ashram it was called
Where they ate brown rice and porridge and they learned to talk with God
Didn't drink no beer or whiskey, but just naturally stayed high
Bubba said it kinda sounded like a life he'd like to try.

So when they came upon the ashram Bubba went to see this man
The Master he was called, and Bub was made to understand
He could stay there for a week to see what it was all about
But if he gave 'em any trouble he could get his butt right out.
Well he tried to learn to meditate but did not do too well
When the dinner bell was rung he'd cut a big ole rebel yell (YEE-HAW)
He'd play Hank on his truck radio till it was almost twelve
When Bubba joined the ashram, the whole place went to hell.

So Bub was called before The Master and told he would have to go
He just had no Buddha-Nature, or at least it appeared so
So he went back to Alabama to his little country farm
Where if he couldn't do no good, at least he couldn't do know harm.
So Bubba's back to bein' Bubba now, his searchin' days are gone
He's back to drinkin' Old Milwaukee, leaves them cowpie 'shrooms alone
If there's a meaning to this song or there's a moral to this story
It's that a redneck's just a redneck, you can't change a good ole boy.
