In his book "The Land Where the Blues Began", Alan Lomax mentions recordings he made of Fred McDowell that later appeared as LPs on the Atlantic Label.

Does anyone know if these have been re-issued? (He doesn't give the name of the album.)

Murray

Murray,

You may find what you want on one of two Atlantic 4 CD box sets:

Atlantic Blues or Atlantic Blues Guitar.

Also check out CD Now They have lots of Fred.

The recordings may be on the Atlantic 4 CD set

Sounds of the South - Alan Lomax's Atlantic Recordings.

Also a large number of Lomax's recordings from these field trips are on Rounder - although, apparently, the Atlantic recordings are not duplicated on Rounder.

The Lomax tapes that were issued in the early 60's were on two different labels - Atlantic and Prestige - The Sounds of the South 4 Cd box set includes ALL of the Atlantic lps, while the Prestige lps (I think there were about 6) are being reissued (with additional unreleased tracks) on Rounder - Most of these recordings on both labels were recorded at about the same time and there is some overlapping of artists, but not songs...They are all wonderful and I highly recommend them all!
