Subject: Looking for Walter Brennan song!
From: griff@pacific.net
Date: 25 Jun 98 - 02:19 AM

Hi all, I am looking for a Walter Brennan tune that says something along the lines of "Life Gets Tedious... Hound Dogs a Howlin', sittin' on a thorn, just too lazy to move."

My stepfather has talked about it for YEARS and I thought it would make a good present.

Thanks... Robert Griffith

The only song I can think of by Walter Brennan was called " Old Rivers " " One of these days I'm gunna climb that mountain, and walk up there amoung the clouds-------

I dont know that it isn't Walter Brennan but here it is attributed to someone else. It's a GREAT song.

LIFE GETS TEEJUS, DON'T IT? Robison Carson

The sun comes up and the sun goes down,
The hands on the clock keep goin' around,
I just get up and it's time to lay down,
Life gets teejus', don't it?

I open the door and the flies swarm in.
I shut the door and I'm sweatin' agin',
And in the process, I crack my shin,
Just one dern thing after another.

Hound dog howlin' so forlorn.
Laziest dog that ever was born.
He's howlin' 'cause he's settin' on a thorn,
And just too tired to move over

The tin roof leaks and the chimney leans,
And there' s a hole in the seat of my old blue jeans,
And I've et the last of the pork and beans.
Just can't depend on nothin'

Grief and misery, pains and woes,
And debts and taxes, and so it goes.
I think I'm gettin' a cold in my nose,
Life gets tasteless, don't it.

Bo

Robert Griffith- The DT is the Digital Tradition, a database which is the world's biggest (and best, we think) songbook. You can access any of the 7100-plus songs by going to the blus box at the upper right side of this page, and entering a title, word or phrase from the song you're looking for.

Try it. You'll like it.

The song is called Life Gets Teejus Don't It and it was written by Carson Robison in 1948, and recorded by him as well as Peter Lind Hayes, Walter Brennan and possibly Luke the Drifter , which was a name that Hank Williams SENIOR used for a while. I just learned most of this while trying to identify the song from my childhood memories and find a recording to buy.

The Hayes & Robison versions are on You-Tube.

Isn't there a verse:
There's a mouse nibblin at the pantry door.
Been nibblin there for a month or more.
when he gets through, he'll be mighty sore,
-aint a durn thing there!

Just a memory.

I recorded this one for Folk Legacy FSI 57 circa 1974.
It's still available as far as I know.

There are at least 7 other threads about this song. Here's the longest one: Lyr Req: Life Gets Teejus, Don't It?.

Those 7 are all linked to each other (See the list at the top of that page.), and to the lyrics in the Digital Tradition Database. You just happened to find one (the only one, I hope) that wasn't linked to all the others.

A few more verses:

My shoe's untied, but, shucks, I don't care
Cuz I recon I ain't a-goin' nowhere,
I'd brush my teeth and comb my hair
Just too much wasted effort.

The water in the well get lower and lower,
Ain't had a bath in a month or more
I've heard it said and I'm sure it's true
That too much bathing will weaken you.

Danged ol' mule, he must be sick.
I jabbed him in the rump with a pin on a stick
He hunched his back, but he wouldn't kick
Something cock-eyed somewhere.

Well, the cow's gone dry and the hens won't lay
And my well dried up last Saturday
My troubles keep pilin' up day by day
And now I'm gettin' dandruff.

I can certainly help with an MP3 of Walter Brennan's version.
