Posting this out of season, but just came on it with Owen Woodson's link to the video on Cape Breton fiddle builders.

The Mummer Man - from CBC's "Land and Sea"

We'll meet Allan Young, a man from Twillingate who's been working hard to keep a Newfoundland Christmas tradition alive. He has been mummering for 70 years!

"Hark what's the noise, out by the porch door?
Granny,'tis mummers, there's 20 or more.
Her old weathered face lightens up with a grin,
Any Mummers, nice mummers 'lowed in."

Cool.

There's going to be a mummer event in Toronto on the 30th. If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll pass on the info.

Visions TV in Canada is carrying "Mummers and Masks", a documentary about the mummering tradition in Newfoundland as well as Ireland and the U.S., on Boxing Day, 6:00 and 9:00 Mountain Time. More info at http://www.visiontv.ca/Programs/Programs_Specials_v3.html
and http://www.newfoundland-labrador.com/archives/events/mummerstv.asp .

I had an advance look at the documentary when I was in Newfoundland
in November. Anita Best, one of the organizers of the conference I was at, and a highly respected traditional singer, is the narrator of the program. It was very interesting, and I recommend it highly. I'll be setting my VCR for sure.
