Nostalgia & old folk groups

I am interested in some opinions here. Can anyone here take seriously any of the old folk groups such as the ones on the recent PBS special? Does it matter to you if only one original member is present? Some claim the folk group name is a "brand" and it doesn't matter who is in the group. I am just looking for viewpoints on this.

In my youth I remember being seriously pissed off if I went to see a band and it was missing some members. Once, for instance, I went to see the Walker Brothers (OK, you need to be old to remember them) and it was just the cheeky younger brother and some pals -- he wasn't even in the original line up!

These days, however, I couldn't give a rat's arse who's in the band if they're good musicians and they play good stuff.

This discussion is going on in several other threads, with opinions a-plenty. Hopefully someone can provide the blue clickies for 'em. It's been too long since I've done one and I'm bound to screw up!

Personally I found them virtually unwatchable along with unlistenable. I'm very much in the minority around here on this. I don't know what the music was, but it sure wasn't folk-music.

Oh well, if it raised a few bucks for PBS, maybe they'll be able to bring a few more episodes of Fawlty Towers over.

I did find the special to be poorly produced.

They dug up everyone they could find from th 60s who could still play, and had the Smothers Brothers introduce them and reprised all the 'hits' of the era....I listened for 30 min or so out of a sort of morbid fascination. Lots of guitar whanging and, I'm sure, nostalgia, for those who never outgrew the songs of their childhood.

The special bit the big one.....It did generate a kinda' neat talk with my nephews that night as I said in the other thread. I agree with Bill.....Ain't the same thing.

I like to hear the old folkies sing, since theirs are the voices that   I associate with the songs--instrumentally though, the younger players often are much betterthan some of the "folk scare" performers were--

I still haven't gotten past John Stewart's taking over Dave Guard's spot, so don't get me started...

Then again, I also think the Dodgers should have never left Brooklyn.
