Great interview about this on NPR, today, which included a wax cylinder recording from 1907 of a Hopi funeral chant and a 1960 heated exchange of Q&A before the House Unamerican Committee AND, a recording they didn't think existed of Woody singing the EXTRA verse of This Land is Your Land, the subversive verse! It will be on the 26th at 8p, I think Mudcat time:

From NPR's site:

Sound archivist Jeff Place is the head archivist for the Ralph Rinzler folklife archives and collections of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Place is featured on the upcoming History Channel special Save Our History: Save Our Sounds. It's a documentary about the great range of audio recordings made over the years and the changing audio technology. Save Our Sounds premieres Thursday Dec. 26.

And, this from the History Channel:

Save Our History
Save Our Sounds
The Emmy Award-winning series chronicles the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and the Library of Congress's American Folklife Center's fight to preserve audio recordings of our cultural history. Native-American chants, oral histories from slaves, music from legendary artists of the past, speeches of presidents and other historical figures--all are rapidly decaying. We hear from audio archivists and engineers, and musicians Mickey Hart, B.B. King, and David Crosby.
