Subject: BS: Givson and Hobner guitars!
From: Dave the Gnome

Gnomeson No. 1 is in India on a six month assignment for the company he works for. He did not have space to take his guitar with him so he bought a throwaway one while he is there. Funny thing is he was telling me he could not make up his mind between the Givson, like an accoustic version of the Les Paul or the Hobner - just like the huge bodied Hofners. He has gone for the Givson in the end. He said they were both crap but the price was about 10 UK pounds so what the hell - keeps his fingers in trim and he won't be giving any concerts.

He has also bought a more expensive Indian stringed instrument but he didn't say what it was. He says he will keep his eyes open for a squeezy type thing for me as well:-)

Anyone come across any other such named instruments - or anyone have any suggestions for what the lad can bring his old man back?

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

There was a Japanese firm trading under the name of CF Mountain which made some very good accoustics.

In Germany they sell a guitar for about 150 Euro that looks just like a Gibson Les Paul and seems to have the familiar Les Paul signature on the pegboard. When you look at it closely, though, it actually says' "Let's Party".

I have a thirty-something year old Ibanez Les Paul copy. Nowadays Ibanez are pretty well respected in their own right. Then, they were making great guitars but mostly copies. The headstock letting of Ibanez manages to make it looks very like the script version of the Gibson headstock logo.

Not suggesting that Givson will become a respected brand in its own right, mind you!

Sorry Robyn - only just seen your question! I got a T-shirt! They did send some stuff home via a courier but it got lost on route. They weren't tto bothered as it was all low value.

IMO, Givsons and Hovners are both crap. Real musicians play Marvins or Tavlors.

here is another spot where my literal mind is at a loss.

"gibson n hofner' are referred to. Is this tongue in cheek? Or is there a Hofner brand? I am familiar with 'Hohner'.

Hofners do exist. I have a Hofner T shirt that says "Since 1881", as well as five Hofner guitars.
I got the T shirt at a Hofner convention, so it's not only me that believes in them. The factories in Germany and China also believe that they make the modern and Contemporary series Hofners. The upper ends of the range are well up to the standard of Gibsons. I have played a Gibson 335 in the Gibson Artist Liaison studio, in Nashville. I preferred my Hofner President! The German made Jazzica is superb.
That Violin shaped Bass the Sir Paul McCartney plays in a Hofner. All the Beatles played Hofner guitars at one time- they were what you could get in Europe when American guitars were unavailable post WW2.
Hohner? Aren't they the people who make Mouth organs, Melodeons and cheap guitars for beginners?
:)
Cheers
Dave

I have a Hofner lute - well, it's a 6 string, tuned like a guitar but on a lute shaped body, which I've had since about 1965.
It's very quiet and doesn't have a great sound these days - maybe I should put new strings on, but I don't use it very often.
Robyn

Hofner made a semi-accoustic guitar that seemed to be pretty well suited to jazz styles for some reason. Not being a guitarist I never understood why!
