Subject: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Dec 02 - 12:46 PM I don't know how many of you UK Catters saw the tribute to Billy on TV last night, but I spent most of the programme in tears, of both varieties. I think that Bob Geldof's contribution was hysterical, that man is so intelligent that he is in danger of giving pop/rock singers a good reputation. If you missed it, store this book mark away in your head, I for one wish I'd recorded it. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Jeanie Date: 28 Dec 02 - 01:01 PM Saw it, Giok - *and* recorded it ! I also recorded the film that followed (with Connolly, plus Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall) "Still Crazy" about rockband comeback tour - all hair and army greatcoats, wonderful. I *may* loan these out for some kind of exorbitant recompense... - jeanie |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Dec 02 - 06:48 PM He used to be a paratrooper, that's how he got to write 'I'm askin' ye, sergeant, where's mine'. I thoroughly recommend Pamelas' book 'Billy', although her speech yesterday was mostly quoting it.... A very very funny man, and an excellent actor. Watching 'Gentlemans' Relish' again tonight, I kept waiting for him to drop the other shoe but it was played with such naivety and innocence that it was totally believable and so unlike the Billy Connolly we know and abuse. Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: breezy Date: 28 Dec 02 - 07:29 PM Sorry Giok but,I don't agree with your viewpoint on Geldorf, thought he was obnoxious, self opinionated, ignorant, arrogant and rude, thus Billy's closing remark cut him down many pegs. Not often I stand up for banjo players either. But Billy did. Still thinks he over-profanites. |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 29 Dec 02 - 04:19 AM Geldorf's contribution showed the innate sense of superiority the rocker feels over the folkie. Arrogant, ignorant and not based on fact. He criticised Billy's [admittedly often dodgy] songwriting using an example that the film showed was Billy and Tam politely performing a song written by someone else in / for a competition. |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: C-flat Date: 29 Dec 02 - 04:47 AM I thought Geldorfs comments were given and received with good humour. Connolly is deserving of all the praise heaped on him on Friday night and I'm looking forward to reading "Billy" which was one of my xmas presents! The worst bit of the show, for me, was Billys' speech at the end. I think having to sit, squirming with embarrasment, while his showbiz pals fell at his feet, threw Connolly of his game. |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Brakn Date: 29 Dec 02 - 06:55 AM I only caught bits of it. Did Gerry Rafferty gget a mention or give a contribution? |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: breezy Date: 29 Dec 02 - 07:13 AM No mention of Rafferty, can anyone explain why not? Anyone bid for my 'Humblebum' vinyl? |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: boab d Date: 30 Dec 02 - 04:18 AM a fantastic programme and a well deserved award. I think Geldof was taking the piss and was right as the 2 songs that he picked were good examples of crappy songs but any artist has the abillity to record bad material but not many people get a BAFTA for there contribution to film especially a welder from partick so good on him and I would love to see him in concert as Robbie Coltrain says"he is th funniest man alive" Couldnt agree more Dylan |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Nigel Parsons Date: 30 Dec 02 - 05:14 AM I remember seeing his live show a good 20+ years ago at Cardiff's "the Capitol Theatre" (now knocked down and part of a shopping mall). For my two-pennorth (US= 2c) I feel he was better before he quit the booze. Nigel |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Niggel Date: 30 Dec 02 - 01:53 PM Just had to add a bit about Geldof. If he hadn`t tried to feed the world I doubt if very many would still remember him. His contribution to the gathering was pure cheek considering his total lack of musical, or lyrical talent. Maybe he was just trying to shoo-oo-oo-oot the whole thing down? |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: GUEST,Mac Tattie Date: 30 Dec 02 - 06:59 PM Yeah, but what a horse's arse the guy has become. He is now the kind of guy that, thirty years ago, he would have been rightly rippin' to shreads. cheers |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: Susanne (skw) Date: 30 Dec 02 - 07:55 PM I've never cared for Connolly the folksinger (would anyone like to bid for my Humblebums double CD?), but he's written some good songs. I care even less for the comedian, but I thought him hilarious in 'Water' and impressive (even if over-acting at times) in 'Mrs Brown'. A story: At the time 'Mrs Brown' was made he went up to Glenfarg Folk Festival, and I watched him sitting in a pub with Iain MacKintosh. I later commented to Iain on the fact that nobody seemed to bother him much. Iain then told me people had been coming up with anything signable to get his autograph, till the barmaid said, more or less, 'Isn't that horrible! Why can't people leave you alone?' Billy replied, 'Well, it's better than being a welder in the shipyards ...' (expletives deleted) |

Subject: RE: BS: Billy Connolly BAFTA award From: BusbitterfraeScotland Date: 30 Dec 02 - 09:17 PM I'm on holiday in Australia, and I wished I had seen it, that's great that the Big Yin got a BAFTA award, however it's a shame that no one mentioned his humblebum partners Gerry Rafferty or Tam Harvey. I'm just wondering how they felt. Maybe they were happy for him and then maybe a wee bit sad that they never got a mention. you never know. P.S. I got a waistcoat from Billy Connolly, His wee pal Danny Kyle gave it to me. However I don't think that he wore it. Tam Big claim to fame. |
