Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Dec 02 - 12:30 PM Art, Here is your link I have pop up ads blocked on my computer so I only see these characters blinking at me. Some files won't load unless I turn off the ad (Java script) blocker. Or does the music take a while to load? Perhaps I'm too impatient. SRS |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: Musicman Date: 29 Dec 02 - 12:33 PM that's great Art!!! lol (gotta click on the horses to make em sing!) |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: Allan C. Date: 29 Dec 02 - 12:57 PM Thanks, Musicman! I woulda sat here for quite a while waiting for the music to load while watching a bunch of horses blink at one another had you not said something. Thanks, Art. |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: Ed. Date: 29 Dec 02 - 01:15 PM Took me a minute to work out what to do, too. Could Joe or a clone change the thread title, please. It's not exactly obvious... And thanks Art, I enjoyed it. |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Dec 02 - 01:21 PM Lovely. I was hoping the others would join in and sing harmony. Some horses are better singers than the people who ride them. |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Dec 02 - 04:48 AM The three on the right do a nice harmony. I'm not too sure about the rythm from the one on the left. It sort of changes the whole character of the thing when you flip him off. John |
Subject: RE: http://laacz.lv/f/swf/hestekor.swf From: Nigel Parsons Date: 30 Dec 02 - 06:08 AM It seems that each horse re-starts if you click him off and back on. So any harmony depends on where (in their individual parts) each horse is. Nigel |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: CapriUni Date: 30 Dec 02 - 08:06 AM So, Nigel, what order do you consider best for bringing the horses in on their parts, say, numbering them 1 through 4, left to right? And who's Broonzy? And what was his claim about horses singin'? |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: Noreen Date: 30 Dec 02 - 09:20 AM Wonderful, Art! Managed to get the horses before the mudcat went down yesterday, and used the down time to work out several new compositions. Now looking for boookings.... N xx |

I feel it's important to fully research these things and appreciate great trouble Art must have gone to to capture these live images on tape. John: Why would anyone flip off a horse? I don't think that's very polite. |

I could let on that I knew the lv. designation was for Latvia, but I only learned that by going far enough back to get to the english language version of the base page: http://laacz.lv/eng/ |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: Art Thieme Date: 30 Dec 02 - 07:36 PM Hi folks, It was BIG BILL BROONZY who was the original source for the oft misquoted and mis-attributed line about all songs being folksongs because, "Hell, I ain't never heard no horses singing !!" The man himself, BIG BILL BROONZY, was very important to us in Chicago. I only heard him one time though. After recording behind many, many, many blues singers to "fill out" their recorded sound, his guitar wizardry was recognized as, simply, the best. His blues were unique and perfect. His chords were created on the spot by him and truly did smack of jazz in their harmonic complexity. When he got into the emerging folk scene in Chicago, Bill explored that new way to augment his income by adding songs like "The Crawdad Song", "John Henry", "The Glory Of Love", "Frog Went a-Courting" and others. Bill wound up living his last years in Chicago where he worked as a janitor for (I think) The Chicago Public Schools. Check out Bill's "Mopper's Blues" which was about his daily chores. Bill Broonzy was very much appreciated by the early folkies like Win Stracke, Frank Hamilton, Dawn and Nate Greening and Gert Soltker --- all founders of the Old Town School Of FOLK MUSIC. Studs Terkel made him a part of his early TV show called Studs Place, and the two of them (Studs and Bill) made several albums from interview shows hosted by Mr. Terkel on his daily radio programs broadcast over WFMT-FM in Chicago. Several LPs of those shows were issued on Folkways Records. VERVE RECORDS issued a SEVEN album boxed set of Bill and Studs talking and drinking (and Bill singing). Later, these were issued as single albums without the talk---just Bill's songs. Studs and Frank Hamilton are still going. That's why all this about "horses singing". Now we have proof of some sort. As Pete used to say, "There're lies, damned lies and statistics. That's what makes "HORSE" races !" Always seems to come back to them horses, don't it ??? Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: Art Thieme Date: 30 Dec 02 - 07:47 PM Oh, you wanted to know where I found this site. I can't say really but... I think it was either from Mark Ross or Ron Miles or Bob Bovee or Warren Leming or Bruce Brackney or Tom Paley----good union men all. Could be wrong though. Art |

Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: Art Thieme Date: 31 Dec 02 - 03:36 PM The 3 on the right really can do great harmony. The left one can almost do it right. Tonight they will be singing Old Lange Syne !!! A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!!!!! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's "horses singin'" proven true!! From: CapriUni Date: 31 Dec 02 - 06:13 PM I guess no one has heard a stallion when a ready mare is within smelling distance. Rightio! And how many blues (and folk) singers compose songs about the good love of a hard woman, and the hard love of a good woman, and not getting love from the woman you want.... Am I remembering this or making it up on the spot: Did someone once say that all songs are love songs? |

Subject: RE: Broonzy's 'horses singing' proven true!! From: Bill D Date: 10 Sep 03 - 05:30 PM Tsk, Forsh... .swf is a "Shockwave Flash" file, it may depend on you having the latest version of that installed, or on having javascript turned on...I just mess around until things work. (I seem to remember having to tweak something to get it working) |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's 'horses singing' proven true!! From: Bill D Date: 10 Sep 03 - 05:38 PM I searched a bit and found lots of technical mumbo-jumbo about Flash animations... this may be the clearest I read. http://www.lynn3686.freeserve.co.uk/swfvivo.html I'll confess, all I do is check to see if things work, and if not, I reinstall what they tell me. |
Subject: RE: Broonzy's 'horses singing' proven true!! From: Bill D Date: 10 Sep 03 - 05:52 PM Forsh...it is just barely possible that your browser has not been told the proper file association it should call to run swf files. Somewhere in the menus at the top there should be a long list of "file types" and one should say "application x-shockwave-flash" with extension .swf...and there should be a way to read & edit what program should run it. That's the only guess I have.... |
