I've searched Mudcat and Google and can't find the lyrics for this one anywhere. The title is "Farewell My Love", and that's also the beginning of the first line. At least the first, and maybe each, verse ends with "...in dreams of Caledonia". It has a slow, haunting melody, and I think it's traditional, but can't say for certain. Does anyone know this please?

"Farewell My Love" is on Caledonian Christmas, on Hills of Lorne, and on Flower of Scotland (all with sound clips).

Thank you for your comments, and masato, for your directions to the albums and sound clips. I would buy one of those albums (I often buy a CD album just for one song), but unfortunately all three state "only for shipping in the USA". (Wigan is in the UK.)

I have heard the song on a CD belonging to a friend, who is currently away for some time, possibly for several months. I don't recall the CD title, but it was an album of Scottish songs, I think a compilation of various artistes, and the singer was female.

I will carry on looking - maybe I can find one of those CDs for sale here in the UK.

This song isn't traditional, the tune may be but the words were written by well-known Scottish actor Roddy McMillan.

Thank you, Murray. I recall on hearing the song querying that it was credited as trad on my friend's CD, as the words did not sound trad. I have managed now to order the Anne Lorne Gilles CD "Hills of Lorne" from amazon.co.uk, and look forward to receiving it.

Just a wee bit of advice on this Joan. Lovely as it may be this is one of those songs that's considered to be more at home in variety theatres rather that in folky circles. Best avoided if you're in a Scottish folk club.

There's an outfit called the Scottish Music Centre which will sell you the music for 7.50 pounds (no doubt with taxes and mailing extra). Well, maybe you download it and pay for paper and ink yourself.

7.50! I wonder what it would have cost me to be a folkie if I had paid 7.50 for every tune I know.

It's based on a rendition by Helen McBennett so the rhythm and lyrics are slightly different. I first found it on a compilation record of Scottish traditionals and I was absolutely captivated. She had a really nice singing voice.

Thanks! I notice that Peter Mallan's version (first recorded in 1981 I think) is much closer to McBennett's than to Gillies' interpretation. The rhythm is more similar and he sings ‘You leave me’ instead of ‘I leave you’ like Gillies. So I wonder... was Gillies' interpretation particularly free or did Mallan get acquainted with the song via McBennet's performance?
